Chapter 1
Kai had never seen a building so big that it made the sky feel small. He stood at the iron-wrought gates of Vespera High Academy, one hand still clutching the invitation letter that brought him far here. Gold-rimmed, signed by a scary handwriting that signals danger, and stamped with a wax seal that smelled faintly of smoke and pine. It had come three weeks ago, carried by a crow that refused to leave until he opened it.Now here he was in front of a school that didn’t even look like a school. It looked like a warlock’s castle had been hijacked by a tech billionaire. Giant crystalline towers pierced the clouds. Floating sigils rotated above buildings. In the distance, he swore he saw a student fly past on.......… a vacuum cleaner?Kai tightened his grip on his bag, the only one he owned. He didn’t have much , just a cracked phone, two hoodies, and a notebook with “How to Talk to Cool People” written on the first page. Spoiler: it was empty. But even with all that doubt rattling in his
Chapter 2
BANG! BANG! BANG!A pillow smacked Kai in the face.“Up, wolf-boy. The bell already rang!” Jace stood over him with hair like a fried storm cloud and a half-eaten granola bar in his mouth.Kai blinked, groggy. “Huh.......what bell?”“The one that means we’ll be roasted if we don’t move. Come on!” Jace threw a hoodie at him. “Every faction’s headed to lectures.”Kai’s blanket clung to him like a second skin. His ribs still ached from yesterday’s welcome party, and the memory of laughter still echoed behind his eyes.“I don’t even know where to go,” he muttered.“Exactly why I’m your designated tour guide-slash-fellow reject-slash-idiot,” Jace said. “Let’s move before the corridor spirits come alive.”They slipped out into the hallway just in time to blend into the morning chaos. Kai followed Jace closely, hood up, hands in his pockets. His shadow trailed behind them like an ancient curse, longer than the others, darker than physics allowed.Even in this noisy swirl of half-human studen
Chapter 3
Kai woke to a rhythmic hum. The ceiling above him was stark white, glowing faintly like a low sun behind clouds. A mechanical limb passed into view, jointed with silver wires, its fingers whirring as they adjusted something on his forehead.“Subject stabilizing,” a voice said ........genderless, clipped and not human.Kai shifted. His muscles felt like jelly and needles. His eyes darted sideways.Three figures stood around his bed. One had no face, only a screen where features should be, displaying graphs and pulsing data streams. Another had an exposed chestplate where gears rotated beneath translucent skin. The third, somehow worse, looked almost normal, except for the silver gleam of his skeletal forearms and the blue light flickering behind his pupils."You're in the Rainbow Medical Wing," the faceless one said. “Tissue repair at 47%. Neural instability detected. Anomalous energy spike logged.”Kai opened his mouth. His throat was dry, tongue sticking to the roof. “W-What happened
Chapter 4
The Academy bell tolled three times, echoing across the mountains and meadows. One by one, students left their dorms, training halls, and hidden corners, drawn to the wide, spiraling amphitheater carved into the mountain’s heart. Stone steps descended in perfect circles, surrounding a stage of gleaming obsidian. The air buzzed with chatter and rumors. Vampires, werewolves, druids, and the rare humans mingled with wary glances. Flags bearing each faction's crest flapped in the wind, fang, claw, vine, flame and more indescribable.Kai sat among the lower tiers, shoulders hunched. Jace lounged beside him, popping berries into his mouth.“What do you think this is about?” Kai asked.“Beats me. Last time this many people gathered, it was for a duel that blew a hole in the south wall,” Jace said. “I hope this is more...educational.”The stage shimmered. A figure emerged from within, her cloak whispering across the stone. She stood tall, with silver hair braided tight like a crown, eyes like
Chapter 5
Kai woke to the warmth of sunlight already piercing through the arched windows above his bed, slashing golden bars across the stone walls of the dormitory. His entire body ached. Not the dull soreness of fatigue, but the deep, soul-scraping kind of pain that came from being used as a werewolf’s personal punching bag. He groaned as he sat up, dragging a hand across his face and blinking blearily at the bedside clock rune hovering midair.8:57 AM.“Crap.”The door slammed open.“Sleeping beauty awakens,” Jace announced, marching in with a scowl and a half-eaten piece of toast in his mouth. “Guess what? Everyone’s forming teams. Everyone. And you, sir, are snoring through your chance at glory.”Kai blinked. “Teams... for the festival?”“No, for a tea party,” Jace deadpanned. “Yes, the festival! Come on, man! If we don’t find three other lunatics brave enough to team up with a rainbow-ranked Arcane and his sarcastic werewolf roommate, we’re going to end up watching this thing from the ble

The training ground behind the academy’s eastern spires was alive with motion, grunts, shouts, and the sharp clang of weapons meeting weapons echoed across the open field. The Festival of Faction was fast approaching, and every team was under pressure to prepare. But not every team had Selene Umbra as their assigned mentor.Kai stood at the edge of the sparring ring, arms folded, brows furrowed. Beside him, Jace was chewing through a roasted meat wrap like he hadn't eaten in weeks. But all eyes were fixed on the center of the arena, where two figures stood opposite each other.Selene of House Umbra.Thalia of the Stone Born."She’s really going to fight her?" Jace mumbled through a mouthful. “I mean, Selene’s practically royalty.”“She’s not doing it for show,” Kai replied, eyes never leaving the ring. “She said we needed to train seriously. That means real combat.”Thalia stood opposite Selene in the ring, still and silent. Her pale stone-toned skin glow faintly under the sunlight, a
Chapter 7
Kai stood in the middle of a barren field, the sky above him split and bleeding red as though the heavens themselves had been torn open. Black feathers rained down from the sky like ash. The wind howled like a dying creature, carrying with it voices that spoke in tongues he couldn’t recognize......but somehow still understood."You're too late…""You were warned…""You should have died in the womb…"He turned in place, his breath clouding as if winter had seeped into his bones. Shapes flickered just beyond the edge of sight, tall, gaunt silhouettes with hollow eyes and skeletal wings. A ring of them circled him. Their presence pulsed against his skin, heavy as guilt.Suddenly, the ground beneath him cracked open like fractured glass. From the depths below, a hand clawed its way out, bloodless, and unmistakably human.Kai stared, frozen, as his own hand dragged itself from the abyss, followed by a second, then a broken mirror of his face rising from the pit, mouth split too wide in a g

He blinked. For a world they’d entered through a towering black portal that shimmered like frozen moonlight, this place was alarmingly… normalThe first thing Kai noticed was the scent of pine, not sulfur or brimstone. Just… pine. And the soft hum of crickets in the underbrush. No floating rocks. No blood skies. No monstrous beasts charging from the horizon as expected by the students.Instead, he found himself standing beneath a tall, spreading canopy of green. Sunlight filtered through the branches, painting the ground with golden dappled patterns. A soft breeze teased at his cloak, carrying the sweet, clean smell of moss and distant water. Even the grass underfoot looked lush and soft, almost like it had been trimmed for a royal picnic.“This is… not what I was expecting,” Jace said, his hand on the hilt of his wooden toy sword, with his shoulders relaxed.Thalia turned in a slow circle, taking in the serene glade around them. “Feels more like a vacation than a death trap.”Selene
Chapter 9
Leaves rustled overhead as Kai’s team and the rival group stood in a loose standoff. Tension crackled in the air like dry lightning. The realization that the lantern they’d found was just a fragment had shifted something in both teams, something competitive and territorial. Thalia stretched her arms overhead, a devilish grin curling on her lips. “Don’t blink. I’ll be done before you finish your next breath.” Kai arched a brow, skeptical but amused. “You’re really going to solo all four of them?” Jace gave a mock gasp. “Please don’t kill them, Your Majesty.” The opposing team, four students, Team Veritas — stood several paces away, spread out on the grass with the confidence of challengers who believed they had the upper hand. Their robes bore faint sigils of defense and enhancement. Still, Thalia cracked her neck and stepped forward, drawing her twin daggers in a smooth, practiced motion. With a shout, Thalia surged forward, her boots slicing through the grass. The first opponent
Chapter 10
The forest had gone quiet again—but it wasn’t peace. It was the heavy silence that settles after something sharp has passed through, leaving the trees holding their breath. Just a thick, uneasy silence pressing down on the group as they crept forward. Kai took a cautious step toward the bushes where the sound had last come from, his hand brushing the hilt of his weapon. Thalia flanked his left, blade drawn, eyes sharp. Jace stayed back just enough to provide cover, murmuring a soft enchantment under his breath, pretending to know what he’s doing. Selene walked ahead of them all—silent and alert like a predator chasing a scent. “Over here,” Selene murmured. They stepped into a clearing that didn’t feel like a clearing—it felt like a wound. The ground was torn in places, grass flattened and stained red. A few broken tents sagged at the edges. And in the middle, eight students were sprawled across the dirt, some unconscious, some moaning in pain. Kai’s breath caught in his throat. “
