CHAPTER 041
Steven swallowed, then nodded quickly. His heart still clung to the promises, to the warmth of their smiles. “Okay. Just for tonight. I understand.” “Good boy,” Sarah said softly, kissing his forehead as if she had been doing it for years. The servants exchanged quick glances with each other, but no one dared speak. Jackson’s smirk deepened, satisfied. Moments later, a servant led Steven down the grand staircase, away from the chandeliers and polished halls, into a narrow corridor tucked beneath the stairs. The air grew colder, dustier. Cobwebs lingered in corners, and the scent of old wood and mothballs filled the space. The servant opened a door to reveal a small room cluttered with boxes, old furniture, and rolled-up rugs. A single narrow bed had been hastily placed in the corner, its sheets crisp but plain. Steven stepped inside, his eyes wide. His heart squeezed, but he forced a smile. “It’s fine. It’s only for tonight.” He placed his small bag on the bed and sat dow
CHAPTER 042
Jedro’s hand slammed down on the wooden bedpost, startling her into silence. His jaw tightened, his voice rising. “Open your eyes, Dianna! You’re in love with a viper. And if you let him coil around you, he’ll squeeze you until nothing of you remains.” Tears spilled down her cheeks. “You don’t understand! Jackson loves me. He’s not like you dear brother, he’s not cold, he’s not cruel. He is warm, he sees me, Jedro. He makes me feel alive, not trapped in this cage of family duty.” For a moment, Jedro’s face softened, not with pity, but with something deeper. A wound! His eyes flickered with pain at her words, true he hadn't always been there when he left the Guler mansion and its empire. He left to create a name for himself and he did. Another reason he left was so Dianna could be the only one in line for the Guler's wealth. But seeing how foolishly she was in love with such a monster, made him slightly wish he was in the seat, to ruin and expose Jackson for who he is
CHAPTER 043
Jedro’s expression hardened. “She’s lost in his illusion. But illusions don’t last forever. When I tear off Jackson’s mask, she’ll see the monster beneath. And I hope she does, but when she does… she’ll thank me.” Adrian closed the notebook, tucking it neatly back under his arm. He bowed his head slightly. “Very well. I’ll dig deeper, find the rot you want exposed. And when I return, you’ll have more than proof, you’ll have ammunition.” Jedro nodded, reclaiming his glass of brandy. Adrian slipped out, his footsteps fading into silence, leaving Jedro alone with his thoughts. He turned back to the window, watching the countryside swallowed by night. Somewhere beyond those hills, Jackson was whispering sweet lies into Dianna’s ears, calling her princess, weaving illusions of love. Jedro’s grip tightened around the glass until it threatened to shatter. “Enjoy your lies while you can, Jackson,” he murmured, his voice like steel in the dark. “Because soon… the truth will devour
CHAPTER 044
Finn was already so upset about what he was hearing, this wasn’t how today was supposed to be. His jaw tightened, his fists clenched beneath the table, and a muscle in his temple ticked as he struggled to keep his composure. He had acted like he didn’t know the Milton’s had abandoned Steven in jail for five years. His daughter Dianna had told him everything years ago her eyes blazing, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sorrow. And coupled with his personal investigation, he knew about everything. How Jackson was pampered while Steven was left to rot in a cell. Finn had looked the other way back then, believing Steven would come back stronger, hardened by the fire and able to face everything head on. But now… now that Steven had severed ties with the Milton family and walked away, Finn wasn’t about to sit idle while they spat venom about him right in his presence. The air was thick and suffocating. A single breath felt like a declaration of war. Finn’s deep
CHAPTER 045
Harry’s chest burned with fury and grief. His knuckles whitened on the table edge. His voice was low, guttural, deadly. “You think yourself clever, Jackson. But I see through you. I see the hand that pushed Steven into the shadows. And mark my words—if he is truly dead, and your hand had anything to do with it, I will bury you myself.” The silence that followed was deafening. No one breathed. Jackson’s smirk flickered, but deep within his eyes... a flash of fear betrayed him. Finn’s voice rumbled like a storm. “Harry, this boy is a rot in your house. Cut him out before he poisons everything.” Harry’s fist clenched, his voice iron. “Oh, I intend to, believe me!“ The meeting dissolved into chaos. Sarah swept out with icy grace, her silence louder than any insult. Helen lingered, her eyes glistening though her face was unbroken marble. Finn stayed close, his hawk-like gaze never leaving Harry. When the doors finally closed, Harry collapsed into his chair, his should
CHAPTER 046
Jedro’s breath came heavy over the line. Then slowly... he said, “Where?” Relief crashed over Finn, though he didn’t let it show in his voice. “The old study. Midnight.” A pause. Then Jedro’s voice, cold but resolute: “If it’s for Dianna, I’ll come.” The line went dead. Finn lowered the phone, his hand trembling. His chest ached, grief and rage and relief all warring inside him. He turned his gaze to the portrait of his late wife hanging above the mantle, her gentle smile frozen in time. “I promised you,” he whispered hoarsely. “I promised I’d protect her. And I will. Even if it means waging war even with my own blood, I will. She is our little girl, no one will ruin her.” Outside Dianna’s room, muffled sobs echoed through the walls. ***** Meanwhile, far away from Riverage City, the air in the room felt heavier than stone. Steven sat across from Luisa Payne, the woman who had been haunting his thoughts ever since he figured out the passkey to the insignia or
CHAPTER 047
Luisa’s gaze lingered on him, unreadable, as though measuring the weight of his decision. Then she rose gracefully, adjusting her coat. “Three nights from now, then. Remember, Steven, this is not just an initiation. It is your rebirth.” As she reached the door, Steven called after her. “Luisa.” She paused. His voice was low, almost a growl. “If I find out you’ve kept more from me than you’ve told… not even the Circle will protect you.” Luisa turned, her eyes glinting with a dangerous amusement. “Good. A president who doesn’t threaten is no president at all.” And with that, she vanished into the shadows of the corridor, leaving Steven alone with his decision and the echo of chains he had chosen to wear. Steven collapsed back into the chair, staring at the Insignia he had now placed on the table. His reflection shimmered faintly in its golden curve. Elias Smith’s voice whispered in his mind, even though it had been years since he’d heard it. 'You were never meant
CHAPTER 048
The Guler estate loomed against the midnight sky, its tall spires shadowed by clouds and moonlight. Jedro hadn’t stepped foot here in years except for the night he sneaked in to see Jackson calling his beautiful sister princess which made him almost puke, burst in and smash his face. But then, he wanted to make sure everything went by the book and make Jackson pay. Now that he was here to honor his father's call, he began looking at the surroundings. . Every part of the grand manor carried memories—some sweet, most bitter. His boots echoed against the ground as he crossed the wide foyer, greeted not by warmth but by silence. The huge doors of the study were half-open. Inside, Finn Guler waited, framed by the glow of the fireplace, he stood stern and immovable as the empire he had built. Jedro pushed the door open fully. Their eyes met—father and son, both proud, both wounded, both unwilling to bow. “Jedro,” Finn said quietly. “Father.” Jedro’s tone was flat,
CHAPTER 049
The torches dimmed, but the chamber did not disperse. The initiation had ended, yet the weight of it lingered around like smoke. Steven stood at the center still, bare, shirtless, the ink seared into his flesh. The well painted Ouroboros drawn in beautiful colors, coiled boldly across his spine, it shimmered faintly, as though alive. The tattoo designer sure did a good job making the dragon look alive. It's body was gold and shimmering even in the dim light. He took his shirt and put it on, but then even as his shirt clung with blood, his stance was unshaken. Around him, the Circle moved like restless predators, some whispering, some watching in silence. “Is he even human? How could he not feel pain?“ “Even the former president felt pain when he was initiated decades ago. He might just be the one who pushes us all to the peak." “Or bring us down!“ Luisa Payne had not moved from her place. Her eyes hovering over him with quiet pride, her expression unreadab
CHAPTER 050
A few days later Dianna woke up one morning, looked at her phone, smiled and got into the bathroom. Washed up pretty good and got into her European sports car and drove off towards Milton's penthouse. It turns out Jackson had texted her to come over and she was so excited to go. Somehow, Steven's disappearance didn't matter to her as he wasn't her first choice after all. The Milton penthouse glittered above Riverage City, its floor-to-ceiling windows spilling light across the skyline like a beacon. Inside, soft music played from hidden speakers, mingling with the faint aroma of roses that filled the room. Dianna Guler sat curled on the velvet couch, her bare feet tucked beneath her, her silk dress draping like liquid moonlight. Her eyes, bright, trusting, almost glowing were fixed on the man before her. Jackson Milton, the man who had become her entire world. He poured two glasses of wine, his movements smooth, deliberate, the kind of elegance that made everything he did se
