In a well secured prison facility on the outskirts of Rivergate City, the warden guard walked majestically to a cell, “Hey you, Inmate 456, Steven Milton! You are free to go. I hope you don't get to come back to this awful place. Try not to come back here. Be good!”

Steven walked out majestically from the cell, followed the warden guard closely from behind he was led to the storage room.

He was given a box and went through some prison procedures. All the outfits he brought with him were returned back and he gave the warden a slight nod.

He changed into them, everything he was imprisoned with five years ago, except for his engagement ring could be found in the box, he knew that was long gone, he didn't bother to ask, he just wanted to leave that godforsaken place as soon as possible.

“Someone is here to pick you up. Steven, stay away from trouble!” The warden uttered and Steven only nodded.

‘Someone? Tsk! Does anyone even care about his well being?’ He thought.

Five years ago, Steven’s supposed biological family, the Milton family, found him using a paternity test.

They brought him home claiming that he was the heir to the Milton family they brought him back to Riverage City.

He had never been someone who was quickly enticed even though he had nothing, but he believed them, after seeing a paternity test and all their pleading of him coming home to them.

Deep down, Steven had yearned for a family to call his, happy that he would soon have a family who would love and support him.

After knowing that he was truly their biological son he went home to them, it was not until he got into the Milton household that he found out that they had adopted a son to fill the void of losing him years ago.

The adopted son was none other than Jackson Milton.

The Milton family had raised, nurtured and groomed Jack like a prince and heir to Milton's wealth.

So despite finding their biological son, they couldn't let go of Jack.

How could they? They had nurtured him for years, grown to love him, whatever they felt he wanted they gave him in full without complaints.

To others, they claimed that Steven was doing well and recuperating from a serious illness, that was the reason why he wasn't with them, then claimed that Jack was his younger brother and the youngest heir to the Milton's.

But then something happened that tested their love for both kids, they had to choose.

The Milton family had a longstanding marriage agreement with the Guler family of Riverage City, these people were one of the most prominent families in that city, their wealth and influence was next to none.

But, they had standards and principles, one not to be taken lightly.

They insisted that their daughter would only get married to the biological son of the Milton family.

The Gulers figured out that Jack was just an adopted child with their resources and influence in the city.

Despite Milton's claims of guaranteeing that Jack was the younger brother of Steven!

“Harry, if you want a marriage alignment with my family, you will get your biological son here.” Mr Guler had uttered sternly, surprising everyone.

That moved the Milton's to search for their son, after he was found, the daughter of the Guler family, Diana Guler had to change from being Jack's fiance to Steven's.

This made Jack Milton so upset and devastated, he felt threatened by all this.

He began drinking, acting very differently, he became irresponsible.

To the point he drove out of a bar despite being drunk which resulted in something bad.

Jackson, who was behind the wheels drunk and unstable, hit and killed someone that unfaithful night.

The Milton family were so devastated; “If it wasn't for you, Jackson would have never turned out this way, he is devastated that you stole his fiancee, else he would never have been drinking in the first place, you are the cause of all this, you should take his place!”

“What?”

“Want to refuse? You will take his place! In just five years after all, you will be out like nothing happened. Besides, Jack wouldn't survive in jail for one minute, he isn't used to hardships, so just take his place, you are his older brother, more stronger.”

Before Steven could even utter a word in protest the Milton family had him taken to precinct and locked up.

He went through hell, humiliation, starvation, there were times he was locked in solitary confinement whenever he tried to fight for himself.

He went through all manner of pain and finally he was out to breathe the freedom his own family had deprived him.

Even in his darkest moments no help came, no one had his back, he suffered a great deal and now…

He immediately snapped out of his thoughts as the huge prison gate opened widely and the cold wind blew his dark hair.

Five years later, he was outside, that's all that mattered.

Just ahead, a beautiful woman stood waiting patiently for him.

Recognising who it was, Steven walked towards her, she is none other than his fiancee Diana Guler.

"Welcome back from prison, fiancé." Diana gave a faint smile, as if nothing had ever happened. "Bet you didn’t expect me to be the one picking you up, huh?"

Steven stared at her smile with a blank expression. He replied calmly, "I really didn’t expect anyone to show up."

Seeing his indifference, Diana’s expression darkened slightly. “What are you upset about? So what if you spent five years in prison? It’s not like you suffered that much. Jackson told me everything.”

At the mention of Jackson’s name, Steven’s lips twitched slightly. “I went to prison in his place for five years, and he couldn’t even bother to come pick me up?”

Diana looked a bit awkward. She cleared her throat and said, “Today is Jackson’s birthday. Your parents are with him, celebrating... You really couldn’t have chosen a better day to get out?”

Steven gave her a cold glance. Five years ago, words like that would’ve felt like a knife to the heart. But now, all he felt was that his past self had been nothing but a fool.

These kinds of family members. This kind of fiancée... And he actually used to have hope for them.

He gently pushed Diana aside and said in a low voice, “Please move. I’m leaving.”

Diana frowned, clearly annoyed. “What’s with the attitude? I came to pick you up and you’re still not satisfied? Everyone’s missed you, and here you are acting like some poor victim. Who are you putting on this act for?”

Steven turned back coldly at her words. “Missed me? Legally speaking, visitation is allowed, right? So how is it I didn’t see any of you once in the past five years?”

Diana was momentarily speechless. A flicker of guilt flashed in her eyes. But remembering how Steven had made Jackson feel wronged time and time again in the past, she held her ground and snapped, “You were always so calculating, trying to push Jackson out the moment you came back home. We stayed away to help you reflect and fix those bad habits. It was for your own good...”

As she spoke, Diana grabbed Steven’s hand and frowned. “Come home with me!”

But the moment she took his hand, her expression changed.

“Our engagement ring... Steven, you actually lost our engagement ring?!”

The sound of footsteps in the hallway interrupted the light moment. They were firm, steady and masculine. Luisa’s smile dimmed slightly, her gaze flicking to the door. “Your husband?” Steven asked quietly. “Yes,” she murmured, smoothing her hair. “Right on time.” Princewill straightened in his seat, his tone low. “You want me to step out?” “No,” Steven said. “We’re guests.” Luisa exhaled softly, composure returning to her face like a mask sliding back into place. “Remember,” she whispered, “he knows nothing.” Steven nodded once. “He won’t.” The doorknob turned, and the air in the room shifted. Mr. Payne entered, tall, commanding, every inch the man of the house. His gaze moved between Luisa, Steven, and Princewill, he was curious and cautious. “Luisa,” he said calmly, “I didn’t realize we had company.” Luisa smiled gracefully. “You do now.” Steven rose to his feet, composed and unreadable. “Mr. Payne,” he greeted evenly. “An honor to finally meet you.” The

The elevator hummed softly as it carried Steven down from the penthouse. The city below glimmered like molten glass, yet his mind was elsewhere — in a conversation he couldn’t afford to mishandle. Princewill waited by the car, one hand in his pocket, the other holding two takeaway coffees. His smile was effortless. “You look like you’re heading to an ambush, not a meeting,” he teased. Steven accepted the coffee, smirking. “With Luisa Payne, it’s both.” Princewill laughed, unlocking the sleek black Bentley. “Ah, Mrs. Payne, if only the world knew who you were and how much you hate leaving the penthouse except of course you want to run away, that alone should make headlines.” “Careful,” Steven replied, sliding into the back seat. “If the papers ever find out, you’ll be my first suspect.” Princewill grinned as he drove out of the underground garage. “Relax. I don’t talk to journalists. They don’t pay enough for my kind of loyalty.” “Good,” Steven said, glancing out a

Helen’s tone softened. “We’ll be careful, Mother.” Harry’s eyes, old but still fierce, fixed on Helen. “And if he disrespects this family again?” Helen looked toward the window, where the city lights shimmered in the distance — Riverage glowing like a restless dream. She spoke quietly, almost to herself. “Then he’ll learn the Miltons don’t bow twice.” The silence that followed was long and heavy. Jackson finished his drink, placed it on the counter, and said lightly, “Thursday it is, then. Let’s see if the king grants us an audience.” ***** Somewhere in the distance, the tower of KE Headquarters stood untouched, its windows dark and unbothered. Inside that tower, a light flickered on in Princewill’s office. He already knew they would return, they were desperate indeed and just like Kahuna' himself has predicted, they will come. All he had to do was wait. Well, he didn't have to wait for long. The very next Thursday afternoon arrived faster than expected. The Milton car

Doyle’s voice didn’t waver. “And yet Mr. Princewill insists. KE does not move by haste, only by design.” Harry frowned. “So we came all this way for a message?” “Yes,” Doyle replied smoothly. “A message, and perhaps… a reminder.” He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. “In this building, power doesn’t chase, it chooses when to receive.” Helen inhaled sharply, masking her irritation with a thin smile. “Tell Mr. Princewill that the Miltons are not accustomed to being kept waiting.” Doyle gave a courteous bow. “And yet, Mrs. Milton, you will have to wait eventually, because everyone does.” He turned and walked away without another word. For a moment, the silence between Helen and Harry was deafening. They were so upset but kept it hidden with their head held high. When they exited the building, Harry exhaled heavily. “He played us, he took us for pawns!” Helen’s eyes remained fixed on the structure behind them, the glimmering mirror of their own frustration. “No,” sh

The smell of stew began to fill the room — onions, spice, the kind of scent that felt like belonging. “Eat,” Joanne said softly. “You look thinner than last week.” “I’m not dying yet,” Elias teased. She smiled, shaking her head. “You’ve been hiding long enough, Elias. When will you return?” He was quiet for a long while before he answered. “When the time is right. When the Circle begins to eat itself, because I know it will.” Joanne frowned. “You think that’s coming anytime soon?” Elias looked out into the deepening dusk. “Power never stays pure. Kahuna is brilliant, but brilliance burns. I only hope he remembers the light I gave him before the darkness consumes him entirely.” She didn’t argue, she had seen what that kind of world did to men. After a while, she said softly, “And Raphael? Will you tell him the rest?” Elias shook his head. “Not yet. He carries too much already. But he will have a part to play when the circle tightens again. Princewill crossed his arms. “Then maybe you should redefine peace.” Kahuna looked at him. “And how would you define it?” Princewill thought for a moment. “Peace is when you can sit in silence and know the person beside you won’t stab you in the back.” Kahuna smiled faintly. “Then I guess I have peace right now.” Princewill grinned. “Good. Try not to lose it again.” Kahuna laughed softly. “Mostly you.” Princewill chuckled. “I’ll take that.” The laughter faded into a comfortable quiet. The night outside the window was deep and calm, the city glowing beneath them like a living thing. Princewill finally stood. “I’ll post guards outside. Get some rest, Kahuna.” Kahuna looked up. “Prince?.” Princewill turned. “Yeah?” “Thank you,” Kahuna said simply. “For not giving up on me.” Princewill smiled. “You are welcome and that is what, brothers are for, just don’t disappear again.” Kahuna gave a faint nod. “I’ll try.” Princewill started toward the door. “Try harder.”
