Chapter One: Humiliated And Rejected
“The ride is thirty bucks.” Vince dipped his hand into his pocket to retrieve his Gucci wallet. The only pricy thing he had left of his belongings before his arrest. He retrieved his hand and a confused expression laced his haughty face. “It was just here, I was certain I had it on me.” He soliloquized. “Is there any problem?” “I couldn’t find my wallet, I must have lost it on my way.” The cab driver turned around and faced Vince. Anger shone in his face as he banged his hand on the steering wheel. He looked at Vince with disgust written all over his countenance. “Get out of my car, loser!” Vince obeyed and alighted, the driver slammed the door and zoomed off in rage. This was the second time he was called a loser that very morning. First it was the rude woman from the bank and now this cab driver. He reluctantly walked away accepting his ill luck. It all didn’t seem to matter at all, not even the few bucks in his missing wallet but clearing up the misunderstanding he had wit
Chapter Two: Where He Belongs
Vince retreated without another word. The trauma he suffered from the day replayed several times over in his mind. He trotted out of the gate just before Maria, his mother-in-law, banged it harshly. He bent slowly and squatted down, he tried to make sense of his ordeal but couldn’t figure out exactly where he went wrong. He opened his mailbox again and reread both emails. Both contained bad news, the exact opposite of what he had hoped for. “The company cannot go down for this Vince, Amber has to take the fall for her crimes.” His supervisor’s words from a year ago rang in his ears. He had sought help when Amber got into trouble but Peak law firm higher ups ignored his plea and abandoned him when he took the fall and now, they mailed him to return to the company, demoted, as a desk worker. He got up on his feet as he thought through his next action. What other bad news was there to hear aside from all these? He made for Ice Cube bar, a small mobile cafe owned by his close friend. T
Chapter Three: To Meet The Deadbeat
“Can we move to my study?” His grandmother questioned with a raised brow. She didn’t look like the grieving mother from a few minutes earlier. She had shed tears all the way from Kelvin’s cafe till they alighted at the mansion. But now she had retreated to her coldness.Vince nodded his head in agreement and they left the room. He stared around in wonder at the luxurious interior of the house. There were giant doors leading to different rooms and the shimmering lights in the hallway made it all more beautiful. They got to the study room and Vince marveled at the arrangement of the room. A library corner was set aside with neatly arranged law books. Excitement filled his mind, the color array in the room made it more comfortable and welcoming.“I did a little digging about you Vince or maybe more than a little.” His grandmother said, smiling.“And what did you find?” He questioned sarcastically.“You worked at Peak law firm before your arrest?”“I did.”Silence filled the air. His gr
Chapter Four: Return To Slavery
Vince knew he had to look the part. He bought himself some pieces of cheap locally made suits with badly fitted shoulder pads and pants. It had been two weeks since he found out about his real identity and his father’s death. Paperworks were ongoing on the transfer of the company ownership into his.He had begged his grandmother for her discretion on his identity. He needed to reform the system of Peak law firm to avoid having more victims like himself. To do that, he needed to go undercover within the company. Bernard’s trap seemed like his best bet at achieving this aim.He was going to take the demotion the company offered, a desk job with a meager salary seemed like a perfect cover. He walked into the gigantic doors of Peak law firm and he marveled at the exterior just as he did the first day he showed up there for his interview three years ago. He was stopped halfway by the security guards but after some confirmations, he was allowed in and he made straight for “his hell”, Bernar
Chapter Five: The Undervalued Reputation
The hard book cover made a slamming sound as it landed on the big Mahogany table. Vince raised his head sharply and his eye glasses almost fell off his pointed nose. Amber had a smug look on her face as she stood there looking at him.“Complete the paperwork on this case, the court hearing is scheduled for next week Tuesday.”“You could have at least dropped it politely.” Vince said calmly and drew the book towards himself. He opened the hard cover to check out the case, he locked eyes with Amber who wore a slightly offended expression on her face. Her brow was furrowed despite trying to act unaffected by his words.“A rape case?” Vince said with a shocked expression on his face.“So?” Amber was starting to get annoyed.“And Peak law firm is representing the plaintiff?”“And? Do you have a problem with that, Vince?”“You are representing a…..perpetual rapist, his criminal history is right here!” Vince said painstakingly.“I guess being away for quite a long while had dulled your abil
Chapter Six:
“Can I get an upfront of my pay?” Vince’s eye shoot up as he stared blankly at the man, the man shrugged his shoulder and gave him a bold look “I am doing this in exchange for money, aren’t I?”Vince bit his lower lip in frustration, he adjusted the mask he had on his face. The interview was going terribly worse than he expected. He picked up the bottle water in front of him and downed some of its content. He wasn’t in the mood to act the poshness he had just been bestowed upon.“Escort him out.”Vince’s thunderous voice roared and two bodyguards hastened towards the man who immediately rushed towards the door at the sight of their hefty muscular bodies. Vince threw back his head in frustration. Probably he was being too picky but what he was looking for was actually close to a needle search in a forest.“Sire, should we invite in the last person?”Vince nodded his head nonchalantly. This was the third scheduled interview since his search and all the candidates were turning out unfit
Chapter Seven: Our Petty System
“I heard it was one of our top investors.” The man said in a whisper before rushing out of the office. Vince sat back on his chair and focused his attention on work. He closed his eyes for a few minutes to remind himself to act very neutral around his grandmother. Thankfully, his office was quite secluded to draw much attention to him.His focus was solely on getting Bernard to trust him more, if pulling out his sentiment was the way forward, he wouldn’t mind, after all, it was actually Amber’s case. Thinking of that, wasn’t it quite unethical to delegate such important work to a desk staff?A loud banging of the table sounded from somewhere close, he heard his grandmother’s thunderous voice and he smiled inwardly. No wonder they called her “The Fox of Peak Law Firm “.Vince was still rewriting the paperwork when someone burst In through the door. He had gotten used to his boss’s annoying behavior but he didn’t speak. Amber rushed in with a disturbed look on her face. Her initially f
Chapter Eight: Out Of The Shadows
Vince felt his heart thumping loudly in his chest as he said that. The head chef nodded affirmatively but he could note the hint of fear in her countenance. Most likely because she knew that a lawyer’s supposed secret was always a grave one.“Mr Finn, what do you want to….” She said in whispers before Vince interjected.“You look ten years younger now.” He said teasingly and they both laughed. The woman held her hand to her chest and gave him an eye roll.“I can see that your sense of humor hasn't dwindled one bit, Mr Finn.”They talked about casual stuff till the lunch break was over and Vince returned to his office. He knew he couldn’t be too hasty in his moves. He had to be certain of her sincerity first. For days after, the cycle kept repeating itself and soon Vince got used to having someone to look forward to visiting at the cafeteria. The next week was uneventful for Vince at work and he just kept a low profile avoiding any sort of confrontation with Bernard or Amber. But besi
Chapter Nine: The Hot Topic
Vince imagined he had painstakingly questioned. “Are you okay Mr Finn?” The garrulous man beside Vince whispered. Vince regained his grip on his subconscious mind. He hadn’t spoken at all. He had stood up, like a total idiot and watched Bernard fit the ring into Amber’s finger. The couple had ignored noticing him while they hugged, and Amber kissed Bernard lovingly. Vince felt his knees wobble and he gently lowered himself back to his seat hiding his embarrassment. That moment, he desperately wished his actions were mere acts but they weren’t. He hadn’t expected the duo to consider publicizing their secret affair or consider ending it in a marriage. He picked up a bottle of drink as applause rained heavily in the air. Entertainers rushed into the room and the room lit up. Everyone kept sending pitiful glances towards Vince but they were more engrossed in enjoying their evening. Vince felt his phone rang, he checked it and it was his grandmother. She sent him the written agreemen
