CHAPTER 1: WELCOME TO THE MAGNUS DEI SYSTEM
Today was the day of undertaking the recruitment order. After the mass death in the failed attempt to take over the Frontier Region, the government had commanded all sixteen-year-olds to enlist in the army.Ella stared at the running tap, refusing to face her son, “I am sorry for not being enough, and yes, I think about your dad every day, praying that he comes back to us. I hope that God keeps him alive, and then you don’t have to go there.”Alex remained silent as he hugged his mom. Praying to God felt far-fetched to him, especially when he allowed the world to fall this far. He never wanted his mom to apologize again, since it was never her fault. “He’ll be okay.”The world was in disarray, but as always, humans were able to adapt to major changes and still find happiness in the little things.Due to the invasion of the SYN Virus, the world order was upended, more than half of the earth's population was lost, and the earth was split into five major Regions: the Detached Region, t
CHAPTER 2: NEW SYSTEM OBJECTIVE
Pitch Black.Dead. He remembered dying, his head flooded with memories. Memories of a wound that should’ve killed him.He remembered it clearly. There had been a bullet in his chest, his mother’s unconscious face, and the cold silent ache. But now, he was here. Alive. Or something like it.Then light shone on his face.Sharp, bright blue panels hovered before his face. His chest heaved as his lungs craved air. Faced with the sudden adjustment of his sight, his brain came alive.“Why can I see?” He blinked twice to clear the blur, only to be flooded by more blue light.Confusion deepened, coiling like smoke in his mind. How was he alive? If someone brought him back, where were they? Why him? And the most pressing question, what had they brought back? His hand hurriedly moved to his chest. There was solid flesh, no pain. The only reminder of the gunshot was the gaping hole in his shirt. “That man.” He clenched his fist, remembering the horrible commander. What if his mother was harmed
CHAPTER 3: CURING AN INFECTED
[Extraction process complete. Preparing for a cure.]Alex waited, his eyes constantly shifting to the screeching crawler. It seemed that because of its defiance, the dominance effect worsened. The virus could alter the physical features of its victims, making it difficult to tell this one’s gender.“I need a place to hide,” Alex mused. His eyes went to the shadows of the crawlers. In a few hours, it would be dawn, and everyone would come out to play. His mind went to the handbook. Reapers had stations in certain regions where they would gather and communicate certain information and news.[Viral Cure Generated. Activation time: 2 minutes.]Before Alex could form another thought, a drug vial and an injection appeared in his hands. “This is it… I can’t believe I am doing this,” he muttered to himself, facing the crawler that was in agony. With this drug, he would be able to revert it to its original state. It was simply too good to be true.In a swift movement, Alex withdrew the red
CHAPTER 4: UNKNOWN ENEMY OR FOE
Alex sucked in a breath, it felt like he had been walking for ages.He looked forward, the tower was coming into sight. “We are almost there, I can make it.”It was simply a tall building, but it felt like salvation. “A reapers station.” Alex muttered to himself when he arrived at the front. The tower was designed strangely but it gave Alex the unending sense of familiarity, especially with the appearance of what looked like a sign etched above the door.It was two swords crossed above an energy gun, it was the Reapers Sigil.Alex frowned, it must have fallen by the invasion of the infection. There was no time to ponder on what could have happened, dawn was already here and very soon, so would those monsters.Alex was about to ram his shoulders into the door but he stopped himself and decided to give a push instead. The door creaked open, revealing blinking light and trashed-up interior. With calculated steps, Alex walked into the building, highly vigilant. There could still be crawl
CHAPTER 5: FIRST SYSTEM TRIAL
The information caught him off guard. There was another system other than his own.“Are you sure you don't remember anything, Trent?” Alex asked.Trent looked up and after a while, he shook his head. There was nothing left for him to remember.“Why were you sent here? What exactly did they do to you?” Alex probed. He knew Trent had gotten into the Reaper's Academy two months ago. It was dangerous to send newbies into such an area.Trent looked around, and he widened as he remembered something. “What area are we?” He asked.Alex shifted back, before resting his back on the cracked wall. “We are in a broken down station in the Outer Area.”On hearing the name, Trent clenched his fist and slammed it on the ground. “Alwert, that conniving fox!” He grunted. On hearing his cousin’s name, Alex turned to Trent, “What did he do?”Trent drew a deep breath, “He sabotaged our mission. I knew it would be dangerous trusting him with the ships coordinate and he sent us right into the nest of a horde
CHAPTER 6: SURVIVING THE SYSTEM TRIAL I
Alex moved, his eyes darting between the dangers of the horde and the safety of the building by his side.He was standing behind the horde and any wrong move or sound would mean his instant death.A loud crash echoed across the area, resembling the crash of a massive building. Whatever that was, it was enough. The horde of crawlers rushed forward, attracted by the deafening sound. This was his chance.Masked by the aftermath of the sound, Alex rushed forward, stumbling and picking himself up.The building was just right there.Just as he got to it, he tripped again, crashing into the door of the building. The previous noise had disappeared and this crash drew the attention of the horde.“Oh No.” Alex gasped, picking himself up.Something glistened by the corner of his eyes, and he went for it.The advancement of the horde was like an earthquake, accompanied by the growls and snarls of hungry monsters.“I have to get out of here.” Alex said to himself, his mind was scattered and he d
CHAPTER 7: SURVIVING THE SYSTEM TRIAL II
It took forever before the pair of feet shuffled out of the kitchen.Alex waited, hoping the crawler had gone far enough for him to escape. There was no way to access the system so he couldn't afford confronting an infected.“I don't want to continue with this death sentence.” Alex sighed, coming out of his hiding area. His stomach grumbled and he could feel the tiredness seeping in.There was no more shuffling but he couldn't tell where the monster was going.“No matter. I should be able to end it.” Alex muttered, before taking a look at the map.Following the drawn out and strangely well-detailed directions, he found himself in what looked like a basement.“A basement? You have to be kidding me…” Countless images from the various movies he had watched appeared in his head.Alex gripped the iron harder, “I can't believe I'm going into a basement alone.”The door of the basement opened with a slight nudge and there was one single lightbulb that had dimmed.Alex listened for sounds, at
CHAPTER 8: FATAL ENCOUNTER WITH THE KING CRAWLER
“Alexander wake up!”Alex opened his eyes as an echo of his mother's voice reverberated in his head.Emotions raved within him, and he pulled himself close to the bathroom wall, hugging his knees.“I don't want this anymore!” His lips trembled, and his body shivered.“Resurrection, survival, death…” The list was endless. “I don't want any more of it.”He bit his tongue to prevent the screams from ripping out of his throat.Twenty passed as he maintained the same position until the clock in front of him chimed.Alex looked up, “7 hours to go.” He muttered to himself. If he waited this out, he could finally leave. He pulled the backpack closer.“I need to get more supplies for Trent. If we are going to find my father.” They would need more food. Alex didn't know if he would be able to leave with the supplies he was gathering, but it was best to try.He picked a silver food pouch and tore it open.‘Just add water.’ The label said.“If that's all it takes.” Alex raised the bottle of wate
CHAPTER 9: TRIAL REWARDS COLLECTED!
HOURS REMAINING: 2 Hours. The walls gave way with a deafening boom, followed by a thunderous roar.Angered by the fact that it had been deceived, the king crawler raged. Its muscles twitched and Alex barely had time to run when it swiped across his leg.The claw sliced through his flesh as if it was hot butter.Alex fell to the ground with a sharp scream. The beast pulled, dragging him across the floor.Pieces of glass pierced Alex's flesh, and tears fell from his eyes. He was done for.But in the next moment, he heard a gunshot. The king crawler's body was riddled with bullets, and the creature swiftly tossed its prey with an angry roar.Alex felt the air leave his lungs, and his vision blurred. He couldn’t see where the shots were coming from, but he didn’t care. The only thought he had was to leave, get the supplies, and hide till the timer ran out.“Heavens, please…” He gritted his teeth. His left leg was utterly useless, so he could barely even limp. Before he came to this store
CHAPTER 10: AN ENTIRE NEW WORLD
Alex maintained silence as he worked but then he thought of something.“If he can turn you into an infected, that would mean he might still be there. Turning others along,” he said to his friend.Trent grimaced, “That’d be cruel.”Alex nodded in affirmation.Turning your fellow humans into murder tools would be nothing short of demonic. He had a feeling that this same person had a system just like his.“I’m done,” Alex said, straightening his back. “You only need to rest for a while.”Trent looked up, “And then what?”Alex returned his look with a brief smile. “We go find my father.”It was a straightforward answer, and Trent knew there was no argument concerning it.“You need to rest, Trent. Get some sleep and I’d keep watch,” Alex muttered, taking hold of the iron rod by Trent’s side.Trent moved to grab the rod, “You already went to search for these supplies. Let me keep watch.”Alex merely stared at him before letting out a chuckle. “Those medications would take effect soon and yo
