CHAPTER 1: The Man in the Gray Coat
Gabriel's fingers were numb. Not the kind of numb that came from touching something cold for a few seconds. This was the deep kind that made you wonder if your fingers would ever work right again. He stood on the elevated train platform, watching his breath turn into white clouds in the freezing Chicago air. Below him, the city stretched out in all directions with its lights blinking like stars that had fallen from the sky. Beautiful if you had money. Hell if you didn't.His target stood three people ahead in line for the southbound train. Gray wool coat that probably cost more than Gabriel had stolen in the past month. Leather briefcase that screamed money. Gold watch that caught the platform lights just right.Gabriel had been following this man for two hours now and every minute of it made his stomach twist tighter. The man had come out of the Regency Hotel after some fancy business dinner. He checked his phone exactly seven times while walking to the station. He kept touching
CHAPTER 2: Blood and Decisions
Gabriel woke up to the sound of someone screaming outside the tent. He jerked upright and reached for the knife he kept under his pillow before he realized it was just Old Mike having another nightmare. The man had fought in some war years ago and sometimes he forgot where he was.Vera stirred next to him, making Gabriel feel guilty for waking her. She needed all the sleep she could get."It's okay," He whispered, staring at her fondly. "Just Mike. Go back to sleep."But Vera's eyes were already open and she looked at him with something that might have been fear. "Did you mean what you said last night? About the money?"Gabriel nodded. "Yeah. We're close now. Real close."She smiled, but it looked tired. Everything about her looked tired these days. "You're too good to me.""Not possible," Gabriel said, planting a kiss on her forehead. Her skin felt too warm. Fever again. He got up and pulled on his jacket. The tent was cold enough that he could see his breath and Gabriel made a not
CHAPTER 3: Among Wolves
Gabriel spent three days learning everything he could about the Siegel estate. Floor plans that Miss had sent to his phone. Guard rotations. Camera positions. Exit routes. He studied them until his eyes burned and his head ached, but he still felt like he was walking into a trap with his eyes wide open. The five million dollars had appeared in his bank account exactly like Miss promised. Gabriel stared at the numbers on his phone screen for a full ten minutes trying to make them feel real. Five million dollars. More money than he had ever imagined having. Enough to save Vera ten times over. But he only got to keep it if he survived the next forty eight hours.Vera was getting worse. The blood came more often now and she barely had the strength to sit up. Gabriel used some of the money to get her into a cheap motel room with heat and a real bed. She cried when she saw it and told him he was an angel. Gabriel felt sick because angels didn't lie to the people they loved and he still
CHAPTER 4: Touch of Fire
Gabriel's mind went blank for a second and then, it kicked into overdrive because that's what happened when you spent years surviving on the streets. Getting caught meant jail or worse."Sorry," Gabriel said, trying to sound confused instead of terrified. "I got lost looking for the bathroom and some lady told me to go upstairs, but I think she was messing with me."The first guard looked at the second guard, and the second guard looked back at Gabriel with suspicion written all over his face."Bathroom's downstairs," The first guard said. "Near the kitchen.""Right," Gabriel said and gave them what he hoped was an embarrassed smile. "My bad. This place is huge and I've only been working here for like three hours. Everything looks the same."He started to turn around, but the second guard stepped forward, his hand still near his gun."Hold on," the second guard said. "Let me see your badge."Every staff member had been given an ID badge when they arrived and Gabriel's was clipped to
CHAPTER 5: Into the Dark
Gabriel couldn't move. The guards had him pinned to the floor and his chest felt like someone had shoved a burning coal inside it where the Phoenix Heart had settled. Every breath hurt and every heartbeat sent fire through his veins. He could barely think through the pain.Ian Siegel walked closer, his expensive shoes stopping inches from Gabriel's face. When he looked up, he saw those cold blue eyes staring down at him.Suddenly he was three years old again, hiding under the bed and praying this man wouldn't find him. But he had found him then and he had found him now."I should have killed you that night," Siegel said, his voice, calm like he was talking about the weather. "That was my mistake. I thought leaving you in the slums would be enough. I thought you would die on your own or disappear into the system. I thought no one would ever connect you to Thomas and Elizabeth Hale."Gabriel tried to speak but one of the guards pressed a knee into his back, knocking the air from his l
CHAPTER 6: Rebirth
Gabriel woke up and he immediately knew something was wrong because dead people weren't supposed to wake up.He was pretty sure he had died in that river three days ago or maybe three hours ago. Was it three minutes ago?He couldn’t tell because time felt strange and distant like a memory he couldn't quite grasp. The smell hit him first. It was a mix of chemicals and something else that made his stomach turn. After a second, Gabriel realized the other smell was death and decay. He tried to move but he couldn't because something was wrapped around him. It was tight enough that he couldn't even lift his arms.Panic shot through him like lightning. He was trapped and he needed to get out. He needed to breathe.Gabriel thrashed and heard something tear. Suddenly his hand was free and then his other hand. He ripped at whatever was covering him and it came apart like wet paper.Once he was free, light flooded in, almost blinding him.He was in a bag. A black plastic bag with a zipper. When
CHAPTER 7: The Truth revealed
Gabriel looked down at his hands and flexed his fingers. He saw the amber light glowing under his skin and he felt power running through him like electricity. For the first time since Siegel had shot him, he felt something other than pain and fear.He needed to see Vera and make sure she was okay. He needed to tell her everything that had happened and figure out what to do next. His whole world had been turned upside down and Vera was the only stable thing left in it.The motel was across town and Gabriel took off running again. The city blurred around him and he covered miles in what felt like minutes. His body felt alive in ways it never had before. The motel appeared ahead and Gabriel slowed down and walked to the room he had rented. He was surprised to hear voices and laughter coming from inside and his heart lifted because Vera was okay. She was laughing which meant that she felt much better.A small smile spread across his lips as he knocked on the door and the laughter stopped
CHAPTER 8: The Butler's Search
Alfred Whitmore sat in his study, polishing the silver watch that had belonged to Thomas Hale.Even after nineteen years, he still performed this ritual every night before bed because it was the only thing he had left of the man who had been more than just his employer. The mansion was quiet around him. Most of the staff had gone home hours ago and Alfred preferred it this way because the silence let him think, remember and hope that maybe tonight would be different from all the other nights. Then the devices started beeping.Alfred looked up from the watch and saw the sensor array on his desk lighting up like a Christmas tree. His heart jumped into his throat because these devices had been silent for nineteen years. He had almost given up hope that they would ever make a sound again. He dropped the watch, rushing to the desk and staring at the screens and the numbers which were climbing. The energy signature was unmistakable. Alfred felt tears spring to his eyes because this was it.
