Gabriel woke up to sunlight streaming through windows that were bigger than entire walls in the tent he used to sleep in.

For a moment, he forgot where he was and panic shot through him. The bed was too soft and the room was too quiet. Something was terribly wrong.

Then he remembered, and the panic faded into something else.

He lay there, staring at the ceiling and trying to convince himself that yesterday had actually happened.

That he wasn't going to wake up under the overpass with Vera shak

The industrial park on the south side had been abandoned for three years, its skeletal warehouses casting long shadows in the late afternoon sun. Gabriel stood beside a rusted loading dock, hands in his pockets, trying to project confidence he didn't entirely feel. Xavier was ten feet to his left, doing a poor job of looking casual. Ariel flanked his right, her posture deceptively relaxed."This is insane," Xavier muttered. "We are meeting with Wyatt's second-in-command. What if he just shoots us?""He won't," Gabriel said, though the Phoenix stirred uneasily in his mind. "He wants to know what we're offering first. Self-interest trumps loyalty in this world.""And if you're wrong?""Then Ariel shoots him first."Ariel didn't smile. "Car approaching. Two vehicles. Black SUVs."Gabriel watched as the vehicles rolled to a stop fifty feet away. Four men emerged from the first. They were security and their weapons were poorly concealed under jackets. From the second came a single figure

  • CHAPTER 45: Alliance

Vincent Wyatt sat at the head of a polished mahogany table in the private room of Marconi's, a restaurant that didn't officially exist on any map of the city. Around him sat four other men, each representing a different criminal enterprise that had flourished in the shadows of the Hale family's decline."Gentlemen," Wyatt began, his voice cold and controlled despite the fury simmering beneath. "We have a problem. Someone is making moves against established operations in this city. Someone dangerous."Frank Romano, who ran the gambling operations in the warehouse district, leaned back in his chair. "You called us here because of some punk causing trouble? Handle it yourself, Wyatt.""This isn't just some punk," Wyatt said flatly. "A few nights ago, my son was beaten within an inch of his life. My entire operation in the East End was exposed. Security footage shows someone with abilities. Fire. Unnatural strength, and before you dismiss it as special effects or drugs, I've got eyewitn

  • CHAPTER 44: Learning Curve

Gabriel stood in the mansion's east courtyard, palm extended toward a practice dummy Alfred had set up. Sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cool morning air."Okay," He muttered. "Let's try this again. Small flame. Controlled.""You're overthinking it," The Phoenix said in his mind. Its voice had lost the hostile edge from before, but Gabriel could still feel its impatience. "Just let the fire flow. I'll regulate the intensity.""Last time you said that, I nearly incinerated the entire dummy.""That was because you panicked and pulled back. Trust the process."Gabriel took a breath and focused. Instead of fighting the heat that always simmered beneath his skin, he invited it forward. A small flame sparked in his palm, orange and gold. It was steady and warm rather than wild."Holy shit," Xavier said from where he sat on the courtyard steps. "You're actually doing it."The flame danced in Gabriel's hand, responding to his will without the usual rage or desperation that fueled it.

  • CHAPTER 43: Terms Of Power

Gabriel sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his hands. They looked normal now. No flames, no amber glow, but he could feel it beneath his skin, coiled and waiting. The Phoenix was always there. Always watching."We need to talk." He said aloud. The response came immediately, a voice that seemed to originate from inside his skull and everywhere at once. “We are talking. We're always talking, Gabriel.”"No." Gabriel stood, pacing the length of his room. "I mean really talk. Face to face. Whatever passes for that with you."“You want answers.”"I want to understand what the hell you are, and why you keep trying to burn through my life like it's kindling."Silence. Then, “Close your eyes.”Gabriel hesitated. Every instinct screamed that giving the Phoenix any opening was dangerous, but he was tired of fighting blind. He needed to know what lived inside him.He closed his eyes. The world tilted. Gabriel's stomach lurched as reality folded in on itself, and suddenly he was standing s

  • CHAPTER 42: Reckoning

Gabriel woke up slowly and the first thing he registered was pain. His whole body ached like he had been hit by a truck and his head throbbed with a dull persistent pressure. He kept his eyes closed for a moment and tried to remember where he was, what had happened and why everything hurt so much. Then the memories came flooding back and Gabriel's eyes snapped open. The Phoenix taking control. Austin's throat burning under his hand. Xavier's face as Gabriel's flames reached for him. The desperate fight for dominance inside his own mind. Gabriel gasped and sat up too quickly. His vision swamed and nausea rolled through his stomach. "Easy," a familiar voice said. "You're safe. Just breathe." Gabriel turned his head and saw Xavier sitting in a chair next to his bed. His friend looked exhausted with dark circles under his eyes and his clothes rumpled like he had been wearing them for days. Gabriel looked around and recognized his own room in the mansion. Sunlight was streamin

  • CHAPTER 41: The Battle Within

Gabriel's body moved without his permission. He was trapped inside his own head, screaming and pounding against walls that wouldn't break while something else wore his skin like a costume. The Phoenix was in full control now and Gabriel could only watch through his own eyes as the entity moved his legs forward and raised his hands with flames erupting across his palms.Austin stumbled backward and his enhanced strength seemed to mean nothing in the face of what Gabriel had become."Stay back!" Austin croaked, his voice cracking with fear. "Stay the hell back."Gabriel's mouth opened and words came out, but they weren't his words. The voice was his but also something deeper, older and infinitely more dangerous."You hurt what is mine," the Phoenix said through Gabriel's throat. "You used him and betrayed him and thought there would be no consequences. Now you will learn what true pain feels like."Gabriel's body moved faster than Austin could react and his hand shot out, grabbing him
