THE DISASTER
Nico struck the raffia frame repeatedly until the wooden sword his mother had crafted for him broke apart, one end ricocheting to a distance. He panted heavily.Sweat dripped slowly down his cheeks and his eyebrows furrowed. "Nico!" A feminine voice called softly. It was his mother. The woman who had taken care of him and his sister without any ounce of complaint. If it were just anyone, they'd take their anger out on the children. And Nico, he felt he was indebted to her. All he ever wanted was to please her, protect her and his sister but destiny was against him.His fate? Sealed. Born with no mana core."Shit!!" He cursed under his breath. This wasn't how he envisioned his life. Two years ago when he turned five, his mother had told him about his shattered mana core because of the circumstances of his birth. Nico was born on the night of the hollow comet, the worst of all bad omens. "Nico!!" The voice called again but Nico didn't move from where he was. His seven year old fists
NICO REBORN
The clouds gathered once more concealing the bright shine of the moon. Thunder rumbled violently and rain began to pour. The rain poured with violent force and at intervals, the sky would get lightened up by lightning.Nico found himself in a transparent world. Past. Present. Future.Everything was within range. The memories of his mother and sister. The happy times. Everything was replaying over and over."No this isn't true." Nico shivered and bent down, wrapping himself around with both arms. He let out silent sobs."WAKE!" A voice proclaimed from behind. But before Nico could turn back, there was a flash of white light which knocked him unconscious in this transparent world. His fingers flinched. Nico slowly rose up. His aura was different– deafening and raw. His heart slowly repaired itself and blood circulation began. He was slowly lifted into the sky by his Aura.Nico's blood circulation was now refined and an off-white orb glowed just below his solar plexus. A mana core. His
MASS BURIAL
Lives flashed before Nico's eyes. His mother's smile. Eleanor's indifference. His optimistic proclamation. Everything replayed over and over. SLICE!!!Nico fell back first with his gaze facing upwards. The beast's head dropped on his chest. The body trashed around for a while before dropping dead. Torvald slowly got out of his pose. The pose of mages with wind elements. Torvald had created a wind disc to slice off the sand dragon's head. "The beasts sense your fear and agitation and they use it against you. Your fear fuels their destructive capability." Torvald explained and walked towards Nico whose gaze was still facing upwards. He was still rearranging his thoughts when hot lines of tears strolled down his ears.If only someone this strong was in his village during the time of attack. Maybe. Just maybe his family would be alive by now. "If you're feeling angry at yourself for being weak, it's natural." Torvald said sternly and when he'd gotten close enough he sat down beside N
TRAINING BEGINS
Torvald had dropped a wind bomb."Shit!" Nico cursed. He was unable to get a hold of himself. He landed hard on his back and began rolling down the mountain until he got stopped by a sturdy tree.Nico winced. He placed his hands on the part of his stomach that had impacted with the tree trunk. Nico could sense that his ribs were broken. "Shit!" He cursed again and slowly sat up using the tree trunk as support. He let out a deep sigh and relaxed his head on the tree. Thoughts of his mother began to crawl into his head. Would she be proud of this step he'd taken? Was vengeance really the best choice?A thin line of tears ran down his cheeks. He quickly cleaned his face. Now wasn't the time to think about this. Going back up to the cabin would only fuel the flames. Staying out here on the other hand wasn't a great idea either.'Mom! What should I do?'Nico stretched forth his hands hoping someone would just come grab him out of this place. That's right, he's all alone now. Nico's vi
NERYSSA WINDCREST
Nico sat down on the wooden bench just inches away from the cliff. They were back at the cabin and Nico was on his knees, as ordered by Torvald. The girl wasn't with them– she was in the cabin. "Why didn't you find your way home?" Torvald asked.Nico raised his head to look at Torvald."I lost consciousness after I got blasted away." Nico answered, picking his words carefully. "I think I broke two or three ribs but I don't feel any pain." Nico said, still locking gaze with Torvald. The mana core. Strange.Mana cores weren't made to heal the user. To avoid casualties when in battle, mages tend to use mana to shield their bodies from taking critical damage but it was never heard of that mana was used in healing the user. Except deviants. Deviants are mages born only to heal but this healing doesn't work on themselves except another deviant uses healing magic on them. What kind of rare core do you have? Torvald thought."I can't have you falling unconscious every time during the cour
HOW RARE IT IS
Nico ran through the forest over and over. The more he ran, the pictures of his mother kept appearing in his mind. She was his determination. The one thing he held on to– her smile. Her beauty. Her love. Nico ran the fifty seventh lap and stopped. His heart was beating faster than his blood flow, making it hard to breathe properly.Nico gasped and wheezed, grabbing his chest tightly. The pain was unbearable. He'd been running nonstop, shielding the pain with determination but now everything was starting to eat at him."Ahh…" Nico yelled and fell down on his knees, gritting his teeth in pain. This was worse than being stabbed through the heart. He fell on his face, squirming on the ground. The sky cracked. It was about to rain. The pain was already reducing. Nico stood up and as he made to run, the rain began to pour heavily. This would make it even harder.Slippery floor. Nico sped off. He began to run again ignoring the agonizing pain. As he ran, the rain drops stung him. It was li
YLVA
Torvald's face brightened. These kids were really something. The boy had the rarest mana core ever known to man. A core even the higher ups would find difficult to decipher. The girl, a potential dual elemental mage having strong connection to the spirit. Since her family was known for producing the best wind mages, there was a probability she'd unlock the wind element. Fortunately, she already had an affinity for the earth element– spirit manipulation.Torvald chuckled slightly."Indeed Nico. You have a mana core, although you may not know." Nico was surprised. He placed his hand on his stomach. That explained why he was able to maintain stamina while running in the forest. But his mother had told him otherwise. Was it all a lie? "Neryssa. Do you know anything about mana regulation?" Torvald asked but the girl shook her head. "Nobody in my house knows I have an awakened core." It was just as Torvald had suspected. He began to swing his sword. Left. Right. Swing. Swing. At fir
STRONGER?
Three years later. The incident that happened in the village had been long forgotten. The beasts sightings were still rampant and lives of unfortunate people were still at stake. Nico and Neryssa's training had progressed a lot. Thanks to the little teachings that Nico got from Ylva during his visits, he'd learnt a lot about his mana core and how to imbue his mana into his weapon.Neither Torvald nor Ylva knew the best way to teach the children how to remove impurities from their mana core, instead the kids were taught how to imbue mana into weapons for fighting.Today, the sky was clear and the chirping of birds could be heard. Below, the clacking of sticks could be heard. Torvald and Nico were at it.Striking with precision and skill. Torvald had the upper hand but Nico was holding his own."Good, Nico. Good."Their wooden swords collided again.CRACK!!There was a slight chip in Nico's sword. Nico knew better that if he broke his sword, Torvald would give him a beating of his lif
PROMISE ME
Still holding Neryssa's wrist, he pulled her and they began to run towards the mountain. The guards with Arlen couldn't chase Nico as they needed to take care of their fallen prince. Nico and Neryssa on the other hand imbued their feet with mana to boost their speed. As they ran, they laughed in victory. Neryssa was happy– genuinely happy. Perhaps the first time she'd ever been truly happy. They ran until they got to a river and then they stopped to catch their breath. "Whoo!" Nico whooped."I don't think they'd chase us this far." Nico chuckled and proceeded to sit down, resting on both arms as he stared at Neryssa."Did you get the charcoal?" She asked. Nico showed her the bag that was used to conceal it. She walked to his side and sat down."I like it here." She said and hugged her knees."You'd eventually come to realize that there's no place better than home." Nico's own words began to bring back memories of the past. If Eleanor had lived to grow up, she'd have been the same
THE CITY
Neryssa knelt facing the mirror in her room. Her hair was neatly braided and packed neatly. She had a white dress on with royal embroidery but it was different from the one she wore the day Nico found her. Torvald had met with Ylva to help him get the best royal attire she could place her hands on and knowing Ylva, finding important outfits like this was a piece of cake.Being the daughter of an army general, she was entitled to many things but after the massacre her team went through ten years ago, her parents disowned her for not listening to them when they had earlier told her to quit being a beast hunter. The only thing she could use was their name.“You look beautiful.” Nico commented, resting on the door post. She quickly stood up to acknowledge him. His outfit was rather casual and Neryssa raised a brow to show her disgust.“What?” Nico's nonchalant attitude spilled. He observed himself for a while and then looked at Neryssa again.“What?” He said with a shrug.Neryssa admired
