The failed application
Ethan arrived at the Nexus Air regional branch as early as possible. He had already arrived at the facility before most of the employees and just stayed in the car till the facility was opened. He had asked Ava to find and purchase a car that looked in such bad shape no one would think too much of it, but as expected, she had gone over and beyond. The car she got him was a Honda Civic. The car’s body was rough and old, but the engine had been replaced with a V8 engine, and the windshields were all replaced with bullet proof windshields.According to her, she was not going to be taking any risks. As long Alexander Cole and his brothers were still out there, she wasn't going to be comfortable leaving him alone.Since he wasn't going to let her send security with him, for the sake of keeping a low profile. The only compromise for her was that he would let her do whatever she wanted with the vehicle that he would use, so he didn't debate it.He sighed and left his car, walking straight
The forced acceptance
Outside the office, Ethan reached for his phone and called Ava. She answered almost immediately.“The HR officer is competent,” he said into the phone the moment she picked up.“It looks like she won’t bend for anything less than legitimate qualifications.”“That’s good, right?” Ava asked and he nodded like she could see him.“It is, but I still need to get in, so here’s what is going to happen. I need you to get a hold of the company’s Chief Human Resources Officer.”“Tell him there is someone you need to be given a job, an Ethan Michaels, and he is to ensure I get the job. Offer him money or whatever.”“And what if he doesn’t take the bribe?” Ava questioned.“He will,” Ethan was sure of his plan.“Okay, I will do that, however, that will draw attention to you won’t it?” Ava said.“A man like that will accept bribes in hundreds of thousands. It would raise flags that you have someone willing to pay that much money for you, so you won’t get the results you want.”“No, it won’t be a pr
First day, first impression
“Hey, do you know who the hell that dude is?” the receptionist called one of the security guards as Ethan walked by the lobby.“The one that just left the HR department. Do you know who he is?” Ethan had already told her that he was there looking for a job, and she still had plans to make his life a living hell, but she wanted to be sure that he wasn’t related to some manager.“I have no idea,” the guard shook his head.“But I think he had asked for Mr. Adewale when he came.”“What? The Chief HR Officer?” The lady was stunned.“Yeah,” the guard nodded. “He went in to talk to Emily before coming back out to call the guy. I think he said his name was Ethan.”The receptionist looked at Ethan with curiosity in her eyes.‘If he got the job through Mr. Adewale, then he must know someone big, right?’ she thought to herself, but she was still unsure.Like the previous day, Ethan had worn very simple and cheap looking clothes. A plain pair of trousers with a checkered brown shirt. He didn’t
Two saves, one day
“Whoa!” people got up in shock from the noise.“What’s going on?”“Did he just try to get himself killed?”The whispers continued, but no one moved in to try to help.Ethan just slowly straightened up, allowing the cart to slide down his back and hit the floor. The lady he had just saved looked around confused. One moment, she was working, and the next minute someone had quite literally jumped on her back. She was about to yell at whoever it was when she heard the sound of something crashing, and the person covering her groaned. She immediately understood that they were only trying to shield her, nothing else.By the time he got off of her, she was confused, but her mind had put the pieces together quickly.“You… You saved me” she stuttered and Ethan just smiled.“Are you new? I have never seen you around before,” she asked and he nodded.“I just applied here and Ms. Lydia was just giving me a tour.”“Well… Thank you. I am Valerie by the way,” she extended her hand for a handshake an
The requirements of being a billionaire
Lydia walked over to Ethan slowly. “Ethan… how did you know to do that? I thought you had no prior experience?”He just shrugged lightly. “Since I was asked to apply, I’ve been reading about Operations Control Center work. Just the basic stuff.”She blinked at him. “That wasn’t basic.”“Well… I had read about a case once.” Ethan replied.“A plane crashed because two flights were on overlapping channels. They only realized later that switching to secondary communication could’ve prevented it.”He nodded toward the board. “So I tried it.”Lydia stared at him for a long moment before letting out a breathless laugh that was full of disbelief and admiration.“Ethan,” she whispered, “you just prevented a near-disaster.”He smiled modestly.“Just got lucky, I guess.”But the entire room knew it wasn’t luck.“Two saves in one day? Damn. He already deserves a raise,” some of the guys joked as Lydia led him out of the room.Ethan followed her in silence as she led him back to her main office
Legacy at risk
Ethan stayed behind in the office, the hum of fluorescent lights the only sound accompanying him. He opened the employee manual, flipping through pages calmly, scanning through the policies, workflow diagrams, and payroll procedures. From what Lydia had just said to him, the whole system was legal to a degree, so he wanted to be sure he understood everything. The company might have found a way to trick the workers into working overtime for bonuses only to pay less than what was expected of the bonus.“But she said it was thirty percent of the whole money that was gone,” he muttered to himself. “That means her actual salary was tampered with.He kept examining the policies, looking for a loop hole the managers might be exploiting.A soft knock interrupted him. The door creaked open, and a man stepped in. His shoulders were tense, his forehead knotted, with his eyes darting around the room as if there was someone he was trying to avoid.“Is she here?” the man asked, his voice tight.
It's all just rumors
The man Ethan was with had been talking for about half an hour, complaining about everything that was wrong in the company, at least the parts that were wrong with the Engineering department.“They give us weekly quotas to meet up with. They make us do some crazy shit with terrible equipment.”“We have to risk our lives everyday, and now I am hearing that some managers have given their kids access to the ticketing site,” the man groaned, frustrated.Ethan raised a brow and the man explained.“I mean, it's all rumours, but we heard that apparently, some of the managers gave their kids access to sell tickets, and they keep the cash for themselves.”Ethan was visibly shocked by it, but the man quickly raised a finger in warning.“Like I said, it is nothing more than a rumor, it's probably not true,” he said and Ethan nodded, understanding his concern. The man sighed and went silent for a while, before continuing.“You know, I graduated top of my class. One of the best in my school’s his
Apologize or face hell!
Lydia had almost given up on Ethan listening to her vent, when he finally said something, but she barely heard what he said, so she raised a brow, asking him to repeat himself.“I said I’m… considering something.” he rephrased his words. “Tell me if this sounds crazy, okay?”She straightened slightly, wary but curious. “Alright.”Ethan tapped his pen against the manual twice, then said it plainly.“Is it possible that someone is stealing the money?”Lydia stared at him for three long seconds before answering.“Stealing? For what? What would they even do with it? Finance managers make, like, triple our salaries. What’s the point of stealing from us?”Ethan’s voice dropped at this point.“Think about it,” he said. “If they always cut 30% off the salary of the workers, even if it's only just a hundred people, just a hundred, out of the whole workforce, that’s going to be a lot of money, right?”“That’s 300% from the company’s payment roster… going somewhere it shouldn’t.”Lydia’s lips
A taste of hell
Ethan stood still, his hand clenched into a fist as Jane toyed with the keys in her fingers. His jaw was tight, and he felt the pressure of his anger rising, bubbling like molten steel just beneath the surface. He inhaled slowly, forcing himself to stay composed.“Lady,” he said, his voice calm but cold, “if you know what’s good for you, you’ll give me my keys and walk away. Right now.”Jane laughed loudly. It was a sharp and cruel sound that grated against his nerves, but he kept trying to calm himself. Afterall, he wasn’t raised to manhandle women.“Give me my keys and walk away,” she repeated his words with a tone of mockery.“Tell me, Mister New Guy, what are you going to do if I don’t?” she taunted. “Are you going to cry to Mommy? Or maybe to the person who got you this job?” She arched a brow, her smirk widening. “I heard all about your little… failed attempt to get the job, before you got someone to pull the strings for you.”“I guess you are as dumb as you look,” she said
You ain't bulletproof
Ethan reacted instinctively. He pulled the guard holding his left arm, using him as a human shield.Jane’s baton hit the man straight in the back, sending him staggering away, groaning in pain.“Hold him!” Jane barked at the other guard. “I said hold him, not play games!”The other guard tightened his grip, trying to force him to his knees, but Ethan was too strong for him.In one swift motion, Ethan grabbed the man’s forearm, pulled him off the ground, and threw him straight at the other guard that was still recovering from the hit.The two men collided with themselves and went straight to the ground, groaning in pain.Jane staggered back as her smirk faded away. “Wait… what are you… how did you…” Her voice faltered as she realized the man in front of her wasn’t the wimp she was so sure that he was.Ethan walked over to the puddle and retrieved his keys, and walked back toward her.The way he walked and his posture made him more menacing than he was a few minutes ago.His muscles w
