Chapter 218
"When the tree grows mighty, no one remembers the small seed it once was," Athalia recited in the tone of one who'd heard the saying over and over again, but only now understood it. "My great-grandfather, Lord Faron, was a seventh-tier mage. An achievement so grand that people seemed to almost consciously choose to forget that he was born and raised in the slums. He was keenly aware of what it means to be weak and under the boot of others more powerful than oneself. Despite the heights of power he reached, the man never forgot the lessons the slums taught him. One of which was, always have an escape route. A seventh-tier mage capable of manipulating space, can you guess what escape method he favored the most?" the young woman asked with a smile.Greg didn't have to guess as Lord Faron tried to make use of it in his last moments. It was just the man's poor luck that the enemy he encountered this time was a deity more proficient in the manipulation of space than he could ever hope to be
Chapter 217
Greg wasn't at all surprised when Lothar continued to glare at him, his words finding no purchase. The hurt and anger were still too fresh and raw for him. It wasn't that Greg couldn't understand Lothar's motivations. His desire for vengeance made perfect sense to Greg. After being so badly hurt especially by those so close to you, Greg would be a lying hypocrite if he said that he wouldn't be in the same headspace as Lothar was in right now. But as he'd concluded before, just because someone felt strongly about something, didn't translate to them being right. Even if it wasn't what he wanted to hear, Greg hoped that there'd be someone to keep him from losing himself to the pain and anger, just as he was trying to do with Lothar. Lothar didn't immediately agree with him, but that didn't mean that he might not change his mind in the future. For now, Greg was content with the chance to at least nudge his thoughts in a different direction Greg would have risen and left the table to gi
Chapter 216
If Greg had been more powerful, then she wouldn't have had to suffer for so long. Greg had really pushed himself to accomplish the task, going so far as to risk his very own future as a mage to ensure that all her mana pathways were fully dissolved. Absorbing his teacher's tier-seven mana could have easily dissolved a large part, if not all, of Greg's mana pathways if things had gone wrong. Despite this, Greg couldn't help but wish there had been more that he could do to speed up the process and spare his teacher the pain she was forced to endure. With the passage of time, Greg had been thinking about it less and less. Lothar describing just how bad it had been, however, had dredged the guilt back up. Greg didn't miss it when Lothar's demeanor changed, turning darker and positively murderous. "When the pain was at its worst, I could barely string two thoughts together. It felt like everything in existence had been stripped away and reduced to unending pain. And yet, even in that abys

How are you holding up Old man?" Greg asked as he took a seat across from Lothar. While his tone was light, there was real concern in Greg's eyes as he regarded the former fire mage. Despite being poisoned, which prevented him from harnessing the full force of his magic without fainting, Lothar always radiated some fire-aligned mana. That was no longer the case. Even as he sat just across the table quietly taking in the passing scenery, Greg couldn't sense even a lick of mana coming off Lothar. During the five days total that Greg had been in Telako, His teacher had finally gotten around to helping Lothar wipe the slate clean and start over. She had subjected Lothar to the same process that she'd endured back in Ethavel. In many ways, Lothar was a lot luckier than his teacher had been. For one, the one who worked on him was an actual seventh-tier healer. In Greg's case, the healer had spent several months training him for the specific task and nothing more. Despite being restricted t
Chapter 214
They'd try to live up to their image of me when I wanted them to look at what I'd done and think to themselves, 'Hmm, I bet I can do better!' So, every time such a person walked into my little store, I said no to them but then I had someone watch them to see what they would do with my no." A mix of anger and contempt crossed the old woman's features. "The majority crumbled. One person said they didn't like their ideas and so they gave up," she spat, looking like she wanted to slap someone. "But you are not just anyone! You are Elwyn, a name known all across this continent and beyond for the influence you've had on the fashion world! Your words carry a lot of weight!" Mage Desia shot back, her tone accusatory and her anger not assuaged in the least. "And did that stop you?" Elwyn asked simply. Both her tone and expression remained even, clearly unbothered by the outburst from Mage Desia. The air mage had already opened her mouth ready to answer. No words left Desia's mouth, however,
Chapter 213
Greg turned his gaze back to the old woman. "This is my only offer. If you find it objectionable, then feel free to walk away," he said in a neutral tone. From the way her lips were pressed together, it was clear that Elwyn didn't like Greg's offer. Still, she didn't try to negotiate, already seeing that it would be pointless, Greg would not be moved. Instead, she turned to regard Athalia who still looked shell-shocked. It would seem that anger had been the only thing that had been keeping the enormity of all that was happening to and around her at bay. Elwyn's plea to Greg, however, had cut through that anger and now the girl seemed unsure what to do or say. The old woman's wrinkly hand reached up and caressed Athalia's cheek. "Promise me... promise me that you will live... for the rest of us!" There was no force in the old woman's voice, just a desperate plea. The tears that had been brimming in Athalia's eyes silently formed two trails down her cheeks even as her hands rose to clin
