#31: Deeper Into The Trial
An elven [Arcanist] sighed and laid her cards down."Damn, I swear when I figure out how you're cheating, you're giving me my money back.""It's just the luck of the draw, crycry." her team [Infiltrator] said.Cryvale was her adventuring name. She was a rare Chosen, not that it had stopped the Bone Sovereign from literally tearing her apart. The next time she hadn't just brought a pistol, but brought an assault rifle as well. She still had nightmares. Cryvale had no desire to enter the next Trial, despite her proximity to it.Her team had been employed to guard one of the Second Trial entrances. It was one of the most bum jobs you could get, really. They didn't 'guard' the entrance but kept it monitored and orderly for the teams that were attempting the Trial. The other adventurers here were either waiting for their schedule or trying to scout other teams. Her [Infiltrator] shifted and locked eyes with a figure walking down the road."Heads up, Cry."An [
#32: It's Only A Gut Wound
The stab 'em as they enter technique was an oldie but a goodie. It happened much more often in the Settler generation, when the countries of Terra Prime fought each other over Trial entrances. Rhys had come up with the idea while talking to Barry about dealing with Trial intrusions. He had started running the moment he'd kicked Garbolt out of the Trial entrance. He wasn't stupid. Whatever team that entered next would be prepared for another surprise attack. The best-case scenario was that another team wouldn't enter. Either way, he'd have more time if whichever team came next would comb the Trial for surprise attacks.Getting rid of extra spare capacity was just a bonus. He slashed Kael's longsword at a golem made entirely of dirt. The blade shattered a manacore that was moving around the exterior. Five more golems on stubby legs were shambling towards him.《Trial Quest updated! Publicly, you have not taken any sides with the war against the demon king. In reality, t
#33: We Need To Put Him Down
That was that. The rest of the Storm Bears rushed through the other side as Garbolt stayed by the entrance for a few more seconds. Then he hurried to join his team.Once Rhys was satisfied that the other team had gone far down the other tunnel he took a step forward. The guardian kneeled in the center of the chamber, gathering the rest of the golems into its body. When they got close, their dirt seemed to lose consistency and just piled into the guardian. It was massive, and wasn't entirely composed of dirt. The guardian had huge rectangular stones for each limb, with dirt filling in the gaps to make a vaguely humanoid body. Countless manacores roiled around in the sea of dirt. It stood up as the last golem fused into it. It turned to him then took one crashing step towards the tunnels. Towards him.Wait, what happened if it reached the tunnels? Would it completely block off the tunnels? He had no idea if that was even a possibility, and he couldn't risk it. If the b
#34: I'm Not An Idiot
The path of a blacklister was one that was uttered in hushed whispers amongst adventurers. It was a sensitive topic in Dominionnet where those native to The Dominion posted under verified accounts. It was something more commonly talked about in the cesspools of the internet, where minmaxing cretins on Terra Prime liked to hypothesize without caring about what it actually meant. In the rare situations where it happened, it would often be for a priceless relic or a truly evil Trial. In these situations, the adventurers would always be deep into their Dominions. A minimum of fifth, normally eighth Dominion was when a solo adventurer could have the breadth of skills to feasibly cover their weaknesses. What would happen if someone tried to do it from the very start? Was it even possible?Garbolt didn't know, but he wasn't going to be the captain that had let a psychopath grow out of control. He started muttering orders."He won't use his gun. Trevolt, stay behind with
#35: Take That Gun Off Him
The rest was easy. He waited until [Phantom Step] was off cooldown and used it to get the guardian to smash the gate. When that happened, the guardian collapsed into a pile of stone, dirt and manacores. Not something he could realistically take while facing the Trial boss.《Phantom Step level up! Phantom Step level 1 → 2》He took his time to search Garbolt's body. The captain still had one minor healing potion and even a minor stamina potion. He took both but left the hammer and shield behind him. A longsword suited him much better. Then he noticed something around Garbolt's chest. It was a small, thumb sized device with a lens. A bodycam. Rhys briefly thought about keeping it but then thought better of it. He stomped on it and then sliced the device into unrecoverable bits.Rhys took a deep breath and took stock. One minor healing potion. One longsword on his back, two throwing knives on his chest, one soulsword in his right hand and a crossbow in his left. Oh,
#36: Too Far, Actually
One could argue that Rhys should have gone back and searched the reliquary for more hints and details on what could have lain ahead. He would argue differently. The golems and the guardians were the hint. A guardian that got more dangerous the more time he wasted on the dungeon? That was all the hint he needed to move his ass. Also, he really didn't want to go snooping around a chamber with Kingsley's guts lying everywhere. His argument proved valid as he appeared in the middle of an enormous summoning circle. A completely flat surface with complex runes etched into the ground. Outside of the circle was a complete warzone. Small stone golems swarmed against a medieval army of mortals.Rhys couldn't hear anything outside of the summoning circle. He'd bet anything that there was a barrier at the edges. The diameter of the spell circle had to be half a mile long. Two purple crystals floated at opposite ends inside the circle. Both of them were about the size of his tors
#37: Broken Nose
He started sprinting at Avale. The Trial scenario hadn't ended. He never expected a six scaled trial to end so easily, anyway."What are you doing!?""I never accepted the deal, idiot."He fired one shot at the shields. The bullet didn't leave a dent. He gritted his teeth. This was going to be tough.A golem lunged at him from the side, faster and more agile than any of the others. He holstered the gun to his belt and swung the longsword at the golem. Steel hit stone as the sword barely penetrated the stone.I should have taken Garbolt's war hammer. He spun to parry the golem away from him and kept sprinting.Avale wasn't moving from his position, and the newly summoned golems were now converging on both of them. The summoning circle was still active, and his soulsword hadn't been subsumed. That could only mean that Avale was acting as the remaining catalyst. He kept sprinting at the strategist, dodging the annoyingly coordinated golems with the o
#38: Overwhelming The Strategist
Rhys's feet touched the ground fifty feet from the strategist. The landing didn't hurt, neither did his bleeding nose. He rushed forward once again, the adrenaline and the thrill pushing him on. He still had one advantage. 《Forty five seconds》 No, he had two. His hood had blown back during the freefall. Avale's shield wall shifted slightly, as if flinching. Maybe it was just his imagination… no, he'd definitely seen it when he was prising the shields apart, he'd seen into the eyes of Avale. It was the same look that Chris had given him. Avale, the upgraded melee-mage strategist, was afraid of him. Rhys laughed as he ran at the line of converging golems. Avale had offered a deal with no timer while he was fighting a war. Avale had practiced enough martial combat to learn [Shield Bash] but had been toppled over by a measly realm one [Infiltrator]. The strategist, a Trial boss, was afraid of him. Oh, he could use tha
#39: Broken Promise
"Indeed, though I intend to make you pay the ultimate price." The [Infiltrator] kicked at a broken golem, then winced at his foot. "What about a deal?" Avale laughed at the mockery. He parted his shields to look at the mortal that ruined it all. "I'll kill the General for you." "You expect me to believe that?" "Now, listen to my plan. What have you got to lose?" Avale had expected the [Infiltrator] to go for the weird artifact that fired small projectiles. Instead, the mad mortal was dead serious. A devious madness danced in the eyes of the mortal. Avale listened to the mortal's plan. Then he realized the [Infiltrator] was serious. "Why? What have you got to gain from all this?" The [Infiltrator] shrugged. "I have no choice. I have to get stronger." "This path leads to ruin. Gaining power that way is folly. The odds are tiny you'll gain a true skill or recognition from the world, and
#40: Realmbound Awakening
He woke in the fetal position, clutching desperately at his chest. Everything hurt. His torso felt like it had empty holes in it that wouldn't close, he was dying, he was dead. He had died. Kael was sprawled on concrete. People in the background shouted in surprise at his appearance. They approached, but that wasn't right. He had to move. He couldn't let himself stop here. Mustering all the willpower he could, he leaped backwards. Back into the System Portal that had spat him out. He collapsed into the Arbiter’s Void, still clutching his chest. The Arbiter knelt next to him, their androgynous elven features showing concern at his state. "Welcome Kael. You know you have made yourself Realmbound?" Kael tried to get up but collapsed under the pain. "Y-yes." "Then I have some refreshments for you. It's time to celebrate." "What?" A glittering golden orb floated up and appeared in front of Kael's eyes. He rea
