CHAPTER 1
The prison gate slammed shut behind Lucas Reed. After three years Rain poured hard, soaking his thin prison clothes almost immediately. He stood there for a long second, breathing slowly. “So this is freedom,” Lucas whispered to himself as he stood outside the prison gate, letting the rain fall freely over his face.“Maya,” he said in a whisper, his voice filled with hope as he lifted his face toward the rain. “I’m back. I am coming home my love.”With that he quickly rushed to the closest jewelry store. The old man behind the counter barely looked up when Lucas stepped inside.“What do you want?” the man asked in a flat tone.Lucas moved closer to the counter, feeling nervous yet excited at the same time. “I want to buy an engagement ring,” he said carefully. That made the man look at him properly. His eyes dropped to Lucas’s worn prison clothes before slowly lifting to study his thin face.“How much money do you have?” the man asked.Lucas reached into his pocket and placed everyth
CHAPTER 2
Lucas stood there like his body had forgotten how to move. His eyes remained fixed on Maya, but he no longer felt present in the room. The words she had spoken kept repeating in his head, each time cutting deeper than the last.“How could you?” he asked quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. “You fooled me…”Maya crossed her arms, her face hard and distant. “I never said I loved you the way you loved me,” she replied coldly. “You assumed that on your own.”Lucas shook his head slowly, as though refusing to believe what he was hearing. “You cried in court,” he said. “You begged me to stay strong. You told me you would wait for me.”Jake laughed from behind her, the sound sharp and cruel. “She deserved an award for that performance,” he said. “I almost believed she cared about you too.”Lucas turned his head toward Jake, his eyes burning. “You destroyed my life,” he said.Jake stepped forward confidently. “No,” he replied calmly. “You destroyed your own life the moment you thought
CHAPTER 3
The wealthy man was surrounded by three men dressed in expensive suits, each of them holding a laptop as they spoke over one another. Their fingers moved quickly across screens and keyboards, but their tense faces made it clear that none of them were in control of the situation.Suddenly, the wealthy man trembled slightly, his hand reaching out for support that was not there.“Father!” a beautiful young woman cried out in panic as she stepped out of a nearby Rolls Royce. Before anyone could react, the man’s legs gave way beneath him, and he collapsed weakly onto the bench. His breathing became shallow and uneven as his daughter rushed forward, dropping her bag without a second thought. She knelt beside him quickly, her hands shaking as she pulled out a bottle of water and lifted his head carefully.“Please, Father, take it easy,” she said anxiously as she pressed the bottle to his lips. “You need to breathe slowly.”The man coughed violently before managing to take a few small sips.
CHAPTER 4
Lucas slowly raised one hand, not in surrender, but in dismissal.“For people who talk so much,” he said calmly, “you seem to have forgotten how to solve simple digital problems.”The tech experts fell silent for a moment, surprised by his tone.Lucas let out a short breath and continued. “Since you all believe I am useless here,” he added, “maybe I should wish you good luck in losing all your money.”A faint, careless smirk crossed his face, one that surprised everyone. Without waiting for a response, he turned his back on them.Rain tapped softly against the pavement as Lucas took a step forward, ready to walk away and leave the humiliation behind him.“Wait!” the wealthy man suddenly shouted.Lucas stopped walking, but he did not turn around.“Prisoner!” the man called out again, his voice filled with panic.Lucas clenched his jaw slightly. “I am not a prisoner,” he said evenly, without looking back. The man coughed and tried to steady himself. “I don’t know your name,” he said qui
CHAPTER 5
Lucas let out a dry scoff as he stared at the people in front of him. His brows were drawn together tightly, and the disbelief on his face was obvious. The number they had just mentioned was still ringing in his ears, and no matter how hard he tried, his mind simply refused to accept it. He shook his head slowly and looked from one face to another. “If this is some kind of joke,” Lucas said, his voice heavy with disbelief, “then please stop it right now. I do not think it is funny.” No one spoke. Lucas rubbed his forehead with one hand as if trying to clear his thoughts. “All I asked for was money for food,” he continued slowly. “I told you I was hungry and that I had nowhere to sleep tonight. That is all I wanted. You did not have to use my situation to play a prank on me.” His voice was calm, but there was pain hidden in it. The three tech experts exchanged uncomfortable glances, while the wealthy man remained quiet. The beautiful young woman watched Lucas carefully for
CHAPTER 6
“If this is real…” he murmured under his breath, his voice low and uncertain, “…then this changes everything.”He looked down at the card again, turning it slightly between his fingers. It looked so ordinary. So simple. And yet, according to Andrea Rogers, it held more wealth than most countries.Lucas gave a faint, disbelieving shake of his head.“I could eat,” he said softly, reminding himself. “I could get proper clothes… a place to sleep… a house.”He paused, his jaw tightening slightly as another thought crept into his mind.“A fresh new start as the world's second richest man .”For the first time since leaving prison, the crushing weight of uncertainty began to lift slightly from his chest. He imagined walking into a fine restaurant, ordering anything he wanted without checking the price. He imagined stepping into a high-end boutique, buying expensive clothes without thinking about the cost, choosing clothes that actually fit him, that made him look rich and important. But j
CHAPTER 7
Lucas swallowed hard, his throat tightening as he struggled to steady himself. Before he could find the words to respond, Victoria suddenly burst into laughter. Her laughter was loud and unrestrained, filled with mockery that immediately drew attention to them.As Lucas stood there, trying to process the situation, something else caught his attention. He realized that Victoria had not arrived alone. The passenger door of the car opened, and another person stepped out.Lucas turned instinctively toward the movement, but the moment he saw the man clearly, his entire body froze. It was Henry Stones, his best friend from college. For a brief second, Lucas could not believe what he was seeing. His heart lifted unexpectedly, and a sense of familiarity and relief washed over him. Out of everyone in the world, Henry was the last person he had expected to meet like this.“Henry…” Lucas called out, his voice filled with surprise and excitement.Without thinking, he hurried forward, a genu
CHAPTER 8
Some people shook their heads in amusement.Others whispered to one another while glancing at Lucas, and a few laughed openly without bothering to hide their contempt. He could feel their eyes on him, and could hear fragments of their conversation.“Did you see that?”“He actually thought he could hug that man with how wretched he looks .”“What a joke.”Victoria, who had already begun walking away with Henry, suddenly stopped and turned back, she had not yet finished. She looked at Lucas again, her expression filled with irritation and superiority.“Do you know what is truly embarrassing?” she said loudly enough for those nearby to hear. “It is not even your situation. It is the fact that you still do not understand your place.”Lucas said nothing, but his gaze shifted toward her.“You are standing here,” she continued, gesturing toward him with a slight wave of her hand, “trying to buy cheap, worn-out clothes in the middle of the night, and yet you still carry yourself like you ar
CHAPTER 9
The sales representative stood behind the counter, her fingers hovering uncertainly over the calculator as she tried to process what she had just heard. For a moment, she simply stared at Lucas, as though waiting for him to correct himself or laugh and admit that it had all been a joke.“Sir…” she began carefully, her voice polite but hesitant. “Are you certain about what you just said?”Lucas looked at her calmly.“Yes,” he replied without hesitation. “I am very certain.”The woman swallowed lightly and glanced around the restaurant. Every single person seated had raised their hands, eager to be included in what had suddenly become an unbelievable moment.“There are twenty people here,” she said slowly, trying to ensure he understood the full implication. “And each plate of the dish costs thirty-five thousand dollars.”Lucas followed her gaze and looked around the room. Indeed, every hand was raised. Every face was filled with anticipation. He allowed himself a small smile before
CHAPTER 10
Lucas remained standing where he was, his entire body still as he tried to process what he had just heard. Maya’s parents, however, seemed completely unbothered by his presence. They continued sipping their drinks by the pool, speaking to each other in low tones and occasionally laughing, as though Lucas was nothing more than an insignificant interruption in their morning. For several long seconds, Lucas said nothing. Then he slowly shook his head, as though trying to clear the disbelief clouding his mind. He took a small step forward, his eyes fixed on them.“Wait,” he said, his voice firm but controlled. “I need to understand something.”This time, Maya’s father glanced at him, though his expression carried clear irritation, as if Lucas was disturbing his peace unnecessarily.Lucas swallowed slightly before continuing.“Were you really the ones who just called the house I bought for you a dog house?” he asked, his voice filled with disbelief.Maya’s mother let out a soft, amused c
