Chapter 61
A private jet touched down at an airstrip just outside the city exactly at 7:42 a.m. Nathan stepped off the stairs first, wearing a hoodie over his suit, as the air outside was truly cold and chilling. David Brune followed close behind, tablet already in hand, face calm and silent, although it was obvious he had something to say. They walked across the tarmac to a waiting black SUV. The driver opened the rear door without a word.Inside, when they were seated, Brune finally spoke, letting loose of the words that were tied up inside of him. “Matthew Steel is waiting at the downtown office. He thinks this is a standard ambassador pitch meeting.”Nathan stared out the window at the passing skyline. “You told him nothing?”“Nothing,” Brune confirmed. “When your father passed, I transferred management of Dodgercoin to Matthew. He was one of the few people I trusted with the tech and the wallet. But I never told him about you. He reached out to you because he saw the viral videos, saw your
Chapter 62
The lecture hall was half-empty, with rays of light from the afternoon sun slanting through the window glasses in dusty beams. The other students kept sneaking stares at Nathan after every moment, even as they chatted with one another creating a hum of many voices. He sat near the back with his notebook open although he was really reading anything. While everyone stared at him, he stared at nothing. His phone had been buzzing nonstop for the last twenty minutes, brimming with texts, notifications, and his group chats exploding, but he had not looked yet. He didn’t need to look. He knew exactly what was happening. The door of the lecture hall opened and he saw his friends pour in. Aaron and John. They had a frantic look on both their faces. Aaron slid into the seat on his left. John dropped into the one on his right. Both looked grim.Aaron shoved his phone under Nathan’s nose without a word. The screen was lit up with a post from Matthew Steel. It was a verified account, with million
Chapter 63
Nathan was sprawled on his dorm bed, with his back rested on the headboard. He had his laptop on the bed just right before him. He had put it there in order to watch a movie, since after the movie night with Rene, it's been on his mind to watch a movie on his own since he had not done so for many years. The room was quiet. He made sure to install noise cancelling pads on the wall, to block out the noise that could come from the other boys outside. The only noise he heard was the low hum of the mini-fridge and the occasional ping of notifications he’d muted. He was scrolling through the trending hashtags absentmindedly, forgetting the movie he was supposed to be watching, when his phone vibrated on the mattress. It was David Brune calling. He answered as soon as he saw the call.“Mr. Brune," Nathan said, solemnly, half expecting what was to be said. “Nathan,” David’s voice came through, heavy with regret. “I’m so sorry about Matthew Steel. I’ve tried talking to him, multiple times in
Chapter 64
The next day, Nathan was back at his home, where he was atleast more comfortable, and felt more protected; the expensive one he just bought. He sat on a wide sofa, legs stretched out, phone in hand. Rhea sat cross-legged on the rug in front of him, her face was bent towards the screen on her face, scrolling back and forth on the trending tab.“Matthew’s still going," she said to Nathan. He angled his neck. "There is already a new thread this morning, check it out, he said : ‘I offered Nathan Rhodes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and he walked out like I was beneath him. No respect for the coin that changed his life. Ungrateful.’ It’s at three million views already.”Nathan stared at the screen for a moment, wondering what to do with the information he was seeing, and then he locked the phone and tossed it onto the cushion beside him.“He’s loud,” he said. “That’s all he is right now.”Rhea looked up at him. “You’re not going to respond?”“Not yet. I want to let him to continue actin
Chapter 65
Nathan was in the living room of the townhouse once again, sitting on the wide sectional with his laptop open on the coffee table. The screen of the laptop showed a live feed of trending hashtags. #PauperFraud was still holding strong, but the momentum had begun to fracture under it. He kept staring at the screen until the front door opened, and Stacy walked in, coat still on, tablet still on one hand as always. “I’ve got it,” she said without preamble.Nathan closed the laptop. “The video?” He asked. She nodded affirmatively, tossing the drive onto the table. “I just bribed a junior AV tech who runs the conference room cameras. I have him twenty-five thousand in cash, that is the only untraceable wallet I actually trust. He sent the raw footage, with all the angles and the full audio. It's all timestamped, with you saying no politely, and then walking out. It captured Matthew pushing, getting aggressive, and then ranting after you left.”Nathan picked up the drive, turning it over
Chapter 66
The conference room of Cloven Headquarters was lit up mostly by the afternoon sun that sent it's rays in like harpoon beings thrown. Beyond the floor to ceiling windows was the city skyline, a glittering backdrop that framed the men seated in the conference. Nathan sat at one end of the long table, arms crossed, staring at nothing in particular. David Brune sat across from him, tablet open but ignored, fingers drumming slowly on the polished surface.Brune broke the silence first.“ I got to say," he began. "The video drop was surgical. It was the perfect timing. Activists are tearing Matthew apart now. Martha Thunberg’s segment last night turned it into a full-blown movement. It's now about‘Corporate greed vs. the underdog’—, and they’re running with it. Matthew is now trending as the villain of the same story he brought up. #MatthewLied is stillnumber one globally.”Nathan gave a small nod. “Good," he said.Brune studied him for a moment.“Do you know how the footage got leaked? Tha
Chapter 67
The moment Nathan's car glided through the main gates of ESU, the air changed. It started with a few scattered whispers. The car's windows were open so he could hear some of the whispers loud and clear.“That’s him” they said. But I did not end there, as out of their pockets people ripped their phones, propping them out to take pictures of him. Suddenly a surge of people began rushing towards him, and within seconds it morphed into a crowd, with students spilling out of lecture halls, cafés, and patios, to come see him. At first he thought he was about to be assaulted, but no, that was not what was about to happen.“Pauper King!” The chant began low, then rose surged up immediately. “Pauper King! Pauper King!”"Are you sure you want to get down from the car now?" Stacy asked, hands still hard on the steering wheel. "This crowd could be dangerous.""You don't have to worry about that," Nathan said to her, about to open the door. "Violence here is strictly prohibited, it doesn't m
Chapter 68
Nathan stood on the balcony of the Upper East Side townhouse, he wore a coat that protected him from the cold evening chill. The city sprawled below him in all its endless lights, endless noise, and endless eyes watching. He had the apology video from Matthew Steel paused on his phone, the frame frozen on Matthew’s flushed, desperate face as he was in mid-sentence. He watched it once more, rewinding it over and over just too see how much the man had made a fool out of himself. Then he closed the tab without emotion. He apologized because he was caught with his pants down, Nathan thought. If Nathan had just been anybody else, if he had no luck of actually being the owner of Dodgercoin, it would have been a different case. But alas, he was, and he had to apologize. A cheap one.The sliding door opened behind him. From it Rhea stepped out with two steaming mugs of tea in her hands. She handed him one without a word and leaned against the railing beside him.“You haven't even smiled sin
Chapter 69
The private conference room on one of the highest floors of Cloven Tower smelled of fresh leather, expensive cologne, and the barely concealed tension that pervaded the place as the meeting held.Around were the usual floor to ceiling glass walls framed the city behind the four men inside like it was a trophy case, yet no one was looking at the view.Nathan sat at the head of the long black table, his posture relaxed but eyes sharp as ever. David Brune sat to his right, he was calm, unreadable, with his fingers steepled right across his face. Matthew Steel occupied the chair opposite Nathan, his tie loosened, while his jaw tight. He looked like he was still recovering from the public humiliation of his apology video. Victor Moody sat beside Matthew, his l stocky frame filling the seat, with his arms crossed, and his face looking like it was carved from granite. There was silence, and it stretched for three full seconds after everyone settled.Victor broke it immediately. “Gentleme
Chapter 70
The Meridian Hotel’s pool penthouse suite was on the top most floor. It had dark wood paneling, with low lights streaming from fluorescent bulbs on the ceiling. Apart from that, the lights of the city flowed in as well through the giant floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city. Victor Moody sat alone at the head of a long glass table, with his sleeves rolled to his elbows, and a half-empty scotch glass in front of him. He hadn’t touched it for ten minutes as he looked at the walls, waiting for someone. The door opened with a little squeak on the marble floor. Matthew Steel stepped in, appearing with a loosened tie on his collar, his shoulders tense, and eyes darting like a man who knew he was walking into a trap but couldn’t see the jaws.Victor didn’t stand. He knew that Victor would come sooner or later anyway, so he maintained an unimpressed look.“Sit,” he said.Matthew hesitated, before taking the chair opposite.Victor leaned forward. “Let’s skip the bullshit, Matt.
