Snitches get stitches
Advocate Gomez ushered us into the pale building, Andrea clung to my hand. We walked up the sterile hospital corridors. The strong smell of disinfectant filling our lungs. On the second floor in the third room was my abuela's hospital room. I swung the door wide open, unsure of what to expect, there all dressed up in her casual clothing was my abuela, bandages wrapped around her head, her eyes locked into ours, tears welled up her eyes"Mis nietos," she whispered, arms wide open. She sat on top of the bare bed, and we rushed to her, burying our faces in her chest. Abuela gripped us tightly, her heart racing against our cheeks. Advocate Gomez smiled nervously."I'll give you a few minutes, then we need to discuss the case," The swanky lawyer closed the door behind her. She may have been a self-centered individual, but she knew how to read the room. "Abuela, do you know her?" Andrea asked all innocence."She looks so pretty, doesn't she?" Ears pulled up in curiosity, eyes wide opene
Stranger danger
Momentarily, I heard footsteps exiting from the gate, and I rushed to investigate. The culprit noticing my approach began to run. I saw a flicker of black, a black floor-length leather jacket, a pale face obscured by a large black hat. As i gave chase, the figure escaped onto a black car, a Mercedes without a license plate, and then he was gone.I tried following, but the vehicle sped off. I returned home, both relieved andfrightened. Firstly I knew for a fact I or we were being followed that I hadn't been paranoid about feeling watched though it was unclear to me why?, secondly I was frightened why were we being stalked, harassed and vilified by the individual or individuals?, what did they want or how far were they willing to go to get it?. I returned back home with these questions plunging on my consciousness. My abuela was awake from her short rest. She was looking around the yard searching for something when she spotted me relief flooded her face "Oh, there you are," she said.
You can run, but you can't hide
I rushed back home, half expecting half, hoping the man with the fancy car had not followed me back home.It was clear this man knew my family, he knew both Andrea and my name and he knew my abuela, and that she was expecting money from our mother's estate, was it possible the man knew who my father was? Suddenly, my father's protection back in San Juan was greatly missed. Where was the feared and revered Marco Cardaso when you needed him. When I returned home, I saw my abuela comforting a crying Andrea."What happened, Matteo?" She asked me."Andrea told me a man in a car tried to rob you," she added. I gave my abuela a brief summary of everything that had occurred, including the note, the fleeing man, and his last message. My abuela barely blinked at the threatening"message." My abuela gave me a hug and said, "You kids should never go to the park alone. It's too dangerous, I will call Advocate Gomez and inform her about that message."I was not satisfied with my abuela's respo
Nothing is ever what it seems
Two major things occurred after that threatening telephone call. The first was my abuela called Advocate Gomez and informed her about everything that had just occurred. The advocate promised to take care of it.A few hours later I heard the chit chatter of the neighborhood kids, kids playing outside, others doing their chores and then the sound of a car pulling over outside and than the unmistakable honking of a car horn. This time, I didn't dare run first to investigate lest it be that dreadful man. My abuela was using the bathroom. Andrea ran outside to investigate "daddy, daddy " she cried as her screams faded to thy outside. My father, my father, was here. He was back. My first instinct was not to run up and meet him like I had usually done whenever he returned from his business trips, back home in San Juan. When everything used to be alright, when I was still an ordinary boy who thought he owned the sun, sky, and the moon. When I always got what I wanted, when my mother was stil
A demonic possession
Andrea didn't get any better after that. In fact, the incident deteriorated her overall psychological well-being. The following night, i was asleep in my new comfort bed, dreaming of the day my abuela would finally let me ride my quad bike despite it being available. i still was not allowed to drive it. When I heard movements and whimpering at the bed opposite mine, "daddy daddy," it was Andrea. I got up to investigate. She was writhing on her bed, sweating and foaming on the mouth, her covers where pulled back, her eyes balls were sunken deep in her eye sockets. I could only see the white of her eyes. It appeared she was being possessed by demons"Don't leave me, Daddy." She muttered, her fingernails clawing onto the bed sheets underneath, I felt hot, warm urine ooze down my legs, I was too terrified to move or even call my abuela for help. I stood frozen, eyes wide opened, fear washing over my every vein, and a live horror was occurring before my very eyes. The door flung open,
Andrea, our little fighter
The front door flung open, and the medical personnel ran into the room, brushing me aside. "What's wrong, baby?" My abuela asked. But Andrea just kept screaming and fidgeting as the medical personnel administered help to her. They injected her with something and soon calmed down and fell asleep. They then shone a flashlight in her eyes. Her eyeballs still remained frozen. "We need to take her to the hospital soon,"The medical personnel announced as they bundled Andrea's tiny body onto a stretcher. My abuela instructed me to wear something warmer. "The boy must stay. The hospital is not a good place for a child," One of the medical personnel insisted, so my abuela called Advocate Gomez for help. The advocate talked with one of the paramedics on the phone, who agreed for me to go along with the promise that the lawyer would be there, at the hospital, to fetch me. Just like that, I was allowed to go along. I suddenly felt anxious to see the lawyer again, mindless to the fact that
Life is a taker...
We followed shortly after with the guidance of the doctor. The room was beautifully decorated with animal paintings and cartoon drawings "We took scans of Andrea's brain, whilst her brain shows no signs of brain damage -" My abuela breathed a sigh of relief"Thank God," she said prematurely, barely giving the doctor a chance to finish."It seems that Andrea is showing early signs of meningitis." The doctor said.My abuela's face froze in shock, and the lovely lawyer looked devastated, "Which could explain the hallucinations, irrational behavior, and frequent psychological outbursts,"The doctor explained."What exactly is meningitis, doctor?" My abuela asked in an accusing voice that was measured."Is it some sort of cancer?" She asked "No, meningitis is the inflammation of the brain tissue which can cause swelling of the brain," the doctor responded"If it's treated early, it can be manageable, but if not, it could cause paralysis, a stroke, even death," he explained. My abuel
She remembers...
The blinding light and my covers were roughly yanked off me, where my first signal was that it was morning. My abuela had a peculiar way of waking me up if I overslept and ignored her, waking me up first. My eyes were swollen shut as if I had gotten in a ten round bout with a heavyweight boxing champion. "It's time for school, Matteo,"my abuela promised. School was the last thing I wanted, then"No, I can't go. What about Andrea?" I asked.Of course, I loved Andrea, but I loved being asleep a little longer, too. "Since when do you care about Andrea?"My abuela asked as she began ironing my school uniform. Her crude words hurt my feelings and I just fell apart, it was true by the looks of it ,it appeared i didn't care but up to now, out of all people she should've known. I didn't realize now my abuela had paused and looked at me solemnly and remorsefully "oh am so sorry, Matteo," she said "I didn't mean it like that," She placed the ironed items on the ironing board and sat ne
