1. The Precipice Of Chaos
Scarlet sunrays bled through the clouds. Drowning the floating city in a bewitching twilight. Dilapidated buildings scattered like weathered rocks. Tall, decaying chapels that prayed to the unknown, old chimneys that breathed heavy smoke, and aged lanterns glimmered from homes burdened with soot. As people went along their day, some clad in tunics, others in tattered shirts, the cacophony of their bustling voices and steam engines echoed in the air, shattering what remained of serenity. "Czar, don't forget to do the dishes when Isoma is done." Czar's mother, Ava, called from the kitchen, his placid expression turning sour instantly. Isoma was the neighbour's daughter. Seventeen, just as Czar. They never got along, Czar was the brutish rascal, and Isoma? The epitome of a good daughter. "Tsk, that pretentious twig." He rolled his eyes. 'Can't wait to be done here and move to the capital.' Even though they never got along, it was to Czar's dismay that they had to always bump
2. The Fall
"i-isoma." Czar winced. In his vision, the surroundings whirled and contorted, twisted images flashed in his head like a broken mirage. He clutched to Aliya whilst a sour, metallic taste flooded his mouth — his brain dizzying with every fleeting moment. "Czar." Elira's voice broke the tangy silence, making Czar quiver as he dragged himself up, staggering. He looked around him, chaos spiralled like dark waters. Houses tore apart like papers and mangled corpses littered the neighbourhood. "W-what's happening. ""Is this… is this an earthquake.""That's impossible, that only happened in the past when humans lived on the wastelands.""So what -"The clamour rose to its peak. Everyone broke into confusion, caught on the web of cluttering disaster. And yet — a dangerous silence permeated the entire city. Czar took slow, uncalculated steps backwards, his back dripping with warm blood, he also turned. And what he saw…"U-un-""Un…dead."Cracked lips trembled, sighting a towering figure at
3. The Undead
"Mum. ""Did you see that. " Czar gulped. "Is this the apocalypse??" He murmured as the previous scene replayed in his head. The officer exuded pride and confidence as he picked the unconscious woman, dashing forward. It happened at that moment. The abominable giant threw a slab that covered the great distance instantly, and it went through the officer's body as though it were paper. Czar's eyes could barely track what happened. One moment, the undead lunged its hand, and the next moment the officer's life sizzled into nothingness. "Aaron." The leading officer cried, almost falling off his wyvern as his hands slipped from the rein. "Not good. " His forehead twitched, sensing an impending doom. Straining his muscles, he steered his mount, changing direction just in time. A heartbeat later, his previous position burst with an untamed kinetic energy, shattering space itself. "Shit." He cursed. "It's an intelligent type. "''Damn, damn. This was supposed to be a normal patrol afte
4. The Talons Of Death
The undead rose, taking haphazard steps towards its next target. Czar. The sizzling life force oozing from Czar stung its senses, leaving its crooked jaw hanging. "No, no, go away." Czar cursed inwardly, frozen with fear. "Czar.""R-run," Elira stuttered, her face ashen. Czar couldn't move. Couldn't think. His body had become stone, his mind white noise. He watched as the gap between them dwindled until the undead was finally a metre away from him. Just one more push and its thin arms would graze his body. His figure shuddered as the scene of the boy being eaten alive flashed once more in his head. "No, I can't die like that. " His lips trembled as he mustered enough force to drag himself backwards. But that wasn't enough. The undead still took another step forwards. Arms stretched to meet Czar. However, before its arms could make contact, the palms fell to the ground, making the horrid creature scream. "Fucking bastard, even a Shambled dare cross my path." The voice of the Ace
5. Carved In Blood
Fog thickened along the coast. Faint sunrays struggled through, turning everything hazy. The crashing sound of the waves against the shoreline resounded in the vast expanse. The wind howled, insects chirped. "Argh!" Czar's eyes snapped open."W-where am I?"Hazy memories flashed in his head like a mirage. A peculiar scene struck hard — vivid, bloody, and unnerving. "Noooo!" Czar jolted awake, groaning as he collapsed back to the ground. Beads of sweats coalesced on his forehead. His muscles sour and burning. Straining his eyes, he saw the fog. It stretched out into the distance, obscuring the horizon. His joints ached, his throat, arid. "Mum, Elira…""Ahhhh." He screamed, his body jerking."No, mum, Elira. ""They are…""They are — dead. " Czar's teeth clattered, his body shivering as the cold wind grazed his skin. "No, that's not possible, Mummmm." "Eliraaaa. " "I, I need to get up, Mum and Elira… they need my help." He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to stand up, his elbo
6. The Scavenger Corps
7th Division Headquarters The tension in the meeting hall was palpable. Dozens of men sat across the lusterless rectangular table, all facing a woman who looked to be in her late thirties. Her auburn hair was packed into a ponytail. Clad in a black military uniforms that hugged her curves. A star engraved on her left shoulder pad sparkled, and the three dragon wings on her right shoulder add an air of mystery around her. To her left, a bald, rugged man in his forties sat. His chin rested on his knuckles. Similar military uniform, but rather than a star insignia, one dragon wing was engraved on his left shoulder and another one on his right. Several other figures were aguised in similar uniforms and insignia as the man. Although a few others had just one dragon wing on their right shoulder. "I believe you all know why I summoned you here," Valeria, the woman with the highest rank in their midst, uttered. No one replied. Rather, they frowned, all gazing at her with a plethora of e
7. Void Light
Captain Azariah headed one of the Battalions under the 7th Division — Void Light. Unease rippled in the air. All officers present in the briefing room tensed. Captain Azariah sat at the centre. The thirty Wing Commanders under him sat adjacent to the centre. All eyes on the youth. The dark man with bushy brows next to him, Commander Jafari, cleared his throat as soon as the last person walked in, sitting farthest to their Captain. "Captain we're all ready. ""Proceed," Azariah said in a hushed tone. "Yes sir.""We've received an order from the 7th Div HQ to charge into the Wastelands. Retrieve the Holy Fragments and evacuate immediately after.""What, the Wasteland?" Adam, the last Wing Commander to walk in blurted out. "Yes.""But we went for a survey just three weeks ago, and we all know the toll it took on us." He frowned.Jafari didn't stop him. His forehead creased as well glancing at Azariah. "Captain, w-what do you think?""The order?""Sir?""As the second in command off
8. For Survival
Czar's breath ceased, covering Aliyah's mouth. They hid behind a large rock. Hearts raced. Muscles tensed.Amidst the fog, they watched a lonesome Undead march forward, its eyes scanning the surrounding. It reached a meter and a half. Thin like desert thorns, and a barbed tail that dragged on the ground. The Undead occasionally turned and looked in their direction making Czar's legs trembled, holding Aliyah tighter. After moving a few yards, the Undead changed direction. Its tail screeched as it coiled on the ground. He looked exactly at the rock hiding Czar and Aliyah, and he approached it with a blank face.'No, please just go, you didn't see us.' Czar's chest rose and fell. His face ashen. The grip on Aliyah tightened. She wanted to wince, but his mouth force any sound back to her throat. When the Undead got to the rock he scanned it and dug his claws at the base of the boulder. Something struggled and rattled for a few seconds then it stopped — dead. The Undead brought it out
9. Dangers Of The Wastelands
Czar's breath felt weak. With timez his skin turned grey covered with blisters. He observed himself, feeling life slip out of him. Yet, he stopped not. He persevered, taking slow, heavy steps forward. Sometimes, he hid from an Undead, sometimes he ran. But right now, he could only pray that no Undead would sight him. Otherwise he would be dead. "I must've been poisoned somewhere," he thought, releasing a laboured breath. Aliyah was wrapped in rags. Every part of her body including her face which made her look like a mummy. That was the best he could do before she got poisoned like him. It had been twelve hours since the start of his journey. Eight since he met that woman. His stomach churned remembering his choices, but he shook his head off. Yes, he could've taken the baby with him, but at what cost and risk? He wouldn't lie to himself. Even Aliyah was enough burden for him. Yet, he should add an infant to the struggle? He doubt they'd all survive if he did that. His best bet
10. Survivors
"Who are you exactly? And why do you want me in your group? Aren't I an extra burden?""Yeah, a question at a time. ""As for who I am — Ezekiel. Well, the son of Ebonspire's governor.""Oh?" Czar's forehead wrinkled. If it were an ideal scenario he wouldn't even dare meet this person's gaze. But no ideal scenario would even place him and the son of Ebonspire's governor in the same picture. "Why do I want you in my group? It's simple, I need more survivors around me, that'll buffer the danger and increase my chance of surviving.""What?" Czar blurted out, his eyes agape. "And you think I'll join you with such logic? I'm no one's danger buffering scheme.""It's not as if you have a choice, do you?""And why should I lie? Everyone wants to survive at all costs, no?" Ezekiel rolled his eyes. "If you're capable, you'll survive, some will die in your stead. If you're not, you'll die and pave ways for others. You pick your struggles." He shrugged. "And will you be an extra burden? Yes,
