7th Division Headquarters
The tension in the meeting hall was palpable. Dozens of men sat across the lusterless rectangular table, all facing a woman who looked to be in her late thirties. Her auburn hair was packed into a ponytail. Clad in a black military uniforms that hugged her curves. A star engraved on her left shoulder pad sparkled, and the three dragon wings on her right shoulder add an air of mystery around her. To her left, a bald, rugged man in his forties sat. His chin rested on his knuckles. Similar military uniform, but rather than a star insignia, one dragon wing was engraved on his left shoulder and another one on his right. Several other figures were aguised in similar uniforms and insignia as the man. Although a few others had just one dragon wing on their right shoulder. "I believe you all know why I summoned you here," Valeria, the woman with the highest rank in their midst, uttered. No one replied. Rather, they frowned, all gazing at her with a plethora of expressions. Their silence was loud. "Captain Zac." She turned to the bald man. "Yes, Sky Commodore." He saluted, flipping through some papers. "Ebonspire, one of the Sky Cities at the eastern edges fell approximately two hours thirty-six minutes." He flipped through the paper again. "Cause, unidentified." "Estimated survival rate, 0.009%" "Expected mortality, fifty million civilians." Zac let out a cold breath, knitting his forehead. Others huffed as well. The hall broke into murmurs. No one saw this coming. The Sky Cities were humanity's greatest invention. Yet, one had fallen. And millions of lives would be lost, or perhaps — had been lost. The 7th Division was the closest to the eastern edges and even at that it would take a while to fully mobilize its forces. And that time, they had not. "Deploying the entire division is an overkill, we still don't know what's happening or would happen. Hence," Commodore Valeria paused, her eyes on one of the figures present in the room. The rest followed her gaze, landing on a blindfolded youth in his early twenties. Ivory hair that cascaded down his neck. Some strands draped his forehead and the silver blindfold. On a closer look, one could see inky strands weaved within. His porcelain skin caught the eye — like a sacred sculpture void of profanity. Azariah Noir — one of the Draconic Captains present in the hall. He felt the shift in attention. But he said nothing. He hadn't uttered a word since the emergency meeting commenced. Those who knew not better would mistake him for a mute. They retracted their gaze. Back to Valeria, urging her to continue. "Even in our Division, the closest Battalion to Ebonspire is the one under Captain Azariah. So, I'm deploying him first, not to understand the situation. Instead…." "Retrieve the Holy Fragments. Rescuing the survivors is secondary." She heaved. "Won't we be leaving the survivors for the harrowing undead to feast upon then?" One of the captains raised concerns. "It doesn't matter," Zac, the chief operation of the 7th Division replied. "Retrieving the Holy Fragments is an absolute necessity. We still don't know why a Sky City would fall out of the blues, and we can't thin our force by sending too many battalions. You should know better yourself." Commodore Valeria looked in the Captain's direction. Her gaze piercing. "Tsk, true." He swallowed. "Still-" "Why do I feel uncomfortable about this whole situation." Another captain voiced out. "If it's what I think you're thinking, Commodore. Won't we be playing directly by their rules, and Azariah might be walking directly into a trap." "That's another reason I'm deploying him specifically. " "No… the major reason, actually." Valeria smiled. A faint, calculating one. "Well, I still feel two Captains should take charge at least. This is the wastelands we're talking about after all. Azariah might be-" "Are you by chance questioning my decision, Captain Reynolds?" Valeria's voice was soft, almost inaudible, but the people present felt the room drop by a few temperatures. "Absolutely not." Captain Reynolds saluted, dropping the matter with an immediate effect. He was only voicing his concern. Let him make no mistake of crossing this woman. "More like it." She smiled as though nothing happened. "So, Captain Azariah, mobilize your forces and descend to the wastelands. Remember, the Holy Fragments are our top priority, rescuing the survivors remain secondary." Everyone watched the person in question remain motionless like a statue. And then he rose, facing the exit. No question, no explanation, just action. His footsteps echoed in symphony, his vanishing figure reminding people of a ghost. The door opened. Two officers in grey uniforms saluted, stepping aside as he passed between them. After he left, the door closed and the two junior officers let out a relaxed breath they didn't know they had been holding. Back in the meeting hall, the other captains and officers a rank below watched the empty door. All had mixed emotions, poker face, furrowed eyes, creased forehead. 'What does this cocky brat think he is? So what if you're the youngest Captain in history.' Reynolds grumbled. However, he was wise enough not to voice out his displeasure even though he knew some few others shared the same thought with him. "I guess the meeting is over, Draconic Captains head back to your base, prepare for urgent deployment, Wing Commanders, work with your Captains in case there's a need for reinforcements or an unforeseen event. Also, maintain order and curb chaos," Valeria let out multiple commands in one breath, watching the officers salute before rising to their feet. A few minutes passed. The meeting hall finally emptied leaving the Sky Commodore and her chief operation, Zac. "Reynolds' suggestion wasn't that bad though," he said. "Drop the honorifics, it's just the two of us." Valeria rolled her eyes. "To be frank, he's right. I would've sent three Captains if we didn't have someone like Azariah. Remember, it's not just the boy's strength that's peculiar in this situation." Zac nodded, sighing. "Ebonspire — is this the last straw of the peaceful era?" Valeria massaged her temple, her mind heavy.Latest Chapter
13 The Contract In Hell
A blazing heat engulfed Czar. He screamed, but his voice was drowned. When he thought everything would end just like that. The scorching temperature subsided. The darkness disappeared, or rather, his eyes could now see in the dark. He saw monstrosities and oddities. However, before he could gaze for too long, a not so unfamiliar voice called. “I wouldn't stare for long if I were you,” Satan's voice echoed. Czar turned, his eyes stuck on the man sitting on a throne. A throne of thorns, skulls, and scorching flames. His body was stitched to the throne like a royal abomination, and a crown festered with maggots sat on his head. “So…”“Where did I stop?” Satan smirked, his eyes all too mischievous, making Czar feel his skin crawl. “Where am I?” “Hell, my abode. ““Hell? Why did you bring me here?““To seal a deal?” “What?” Czar took a few steps back, but he soon stepped on a long finger, making him trip. “Easy, easy.”“I'm not sure if there's any reason to be this cautious again

The serpentine Undead slammed its jaws. Serrated fangs tore flesh and bones… or so it thought. Time stopped. And then it reversed. The Undead moved backwards, the three figures from the tunnel returned to the surface, Czar was on his feet with Aliyah. The treacherous boy was behind him, his eyes snappy. They all stood frozen like gargoyles , eyes aghast. They the fog dissipate. The ambience temperature rose by a several degree their body steaming up. Space fractured, and an entity descended to the world. Ezekiel's eyes sparkled with a dozen and one stars. Blood trickled from his eyes down to his chin. His legs wobbled. Czar's heart thumped. He had lost control of his body. The serpentine Undead was a few yards away. But he paid it not attention. "W-what is this?" "An Undead?""That associate me with this lowly things."Thunderclap banged in Czar's ears making blood stream out of his orifices. This being…The height of an adult human. Right face burnt and oozing with pulse. Twe

"What were you doing out there though?" Czar asked as he moved out with Ezekiel. The rest followed. An hour had passed since he joined Ezekiel's group and lo and behold, his skin had regained its vitality revealing a rosy tone. His blisters had disappeared as well. Aliyah was unwrapped too after being cautioned not to do so earlier. Since that would risk her skin peeling off. But now he could and he did. "I was scouting," Ezekiel answered. "Our group is quite the number, we need to scout ahead in different directions just to be safe." "What? What did you think? That fate had us together. Don't make me laugh please." Ezekiel snickered. "Why are you so relaxed and energetic?" Czar pushed another question again. "As opposed to?" Ezekiel rolled his eyes. "What would brooding do in this situation anyway? You'd just die of depression and anxiety." "Is that so?" Czar watched the weirdo. "Sure, I mean I lost it momentarily when an Undead killed my father, but what should

"Who are you exactly? And why do you want me in your group? Aren't I an extra burden?""Yeah, a question at a time. ""As for who I am — Ezekiel. Well, the son of Ebonspire's governor.""Oh?" Czar's forehead wrinkled. If it were an ideal scenario he wouldn't even dare meet this person's gaze. But no ideal scenario would even place him and the son of Ebonspire's governor in the same picture. "Why do I want you in my group? It's simple, I need more survivors around me, that'll buffer the danger and increase my chance of surviving.""What?" Czar blurted out, his eyes agape. "And you think I'll join you with such logic? I'm no one's danger buffering scheme.""It's not as if you have a choice, do you?""And why should I lie? Everyone wants to survive at all costs, no?" Ezekiel rolled his eyes. "If you're capable, you'll survive, some will die in your stead. If you're not, you'll die and pave ways for others. You pick your struggles." He shrugged. "And will you be an extra burden? Yes,
9. Dangers Of The Wastelands
Czar's breath felt weak. With timez his skin turned grey covered with blisters. He observed himself, feeling life slip out of him. Yet, he stopped not. He persevered, taking slow, heavy steps forward. Sometimes, he hid from an Undead, sometimes he ran. But right now, he could only pray that no Undead would sight him. Otherwise he would be dead. "I must've been poisoned somewhere," he thought, releasing a laboured breath. Aliyah was wrapped in rags. Every part of her body including her face which made her look like a mummy. That was the best he could do before she got poisoned like him. It had been twelve hours since the start of his journey. Eight since he met that woman. His stomach churned remembering his choices, but he shook his head off. Yes, he could've taken the baby with him, but at what cost and risk? He wouldn't lie to himself. Even Aliyah was enough burden for him. Yet, he should add an infant to the struggle? He doubt they'd all survive if he did that. His best bet
8. For Survival
Czar's breath ceased, covering Aliyah's mouth. They hid behind a large rock. Hearts raced. Muscles tensed.Amidst the fog, they watched a lonesome Undead march forward, its eyes scanning the surrounding. It reached a meter and a half. Thin like desert thorns, and a barbed tail that dragged on the ground. The Undead occasionally turned and looked in their direction making Czar's legs trembled, holding Aliyah tighter. After moving a few yards, the Undead changed direction. Its tail screeched as it coiled on the ground. He looked exactly at the rock hiding Czar and Aliyah, and he approached it with a blank face.'No, please just go, you didn't see us.' Czar's chest rose and fell. His face ashen. The grip on Aliyah tightened. She wanted to wince, but his mouth force any sound back to her throat. When the Undead got to the rock he scanned it and dug his claws at the base of the boulder. Something struggled and rattled for a few seconds then it stopped — dead. The Undead brought it out
