A Cheat At World's End
Kenan felt horror settle into the pit of his stomach, but even that paled in comparison to what Katherine was feeling. Betrayal, hurt, the exhaustion of her wedding, and humiliation unlike anything she'd experienced before—all while standing in front of their families."How could you do this to me?" Her voice cracked. Even as she asked, she already knew the answer better than anyone. She turned, eyes blazing with hatred as she stared at her stepsister. "Why do you hate me so much? You've mocked me, humiliated me, stolen my inheritance, and now you're destroying my marriage!"Kenan's heart shattered. More than his own humiliation, it was the raw anguish in her voice that broke him. And the guilt—knowing the role he'd played in putting it there. He stepped forward, forcing himself to ignore the images on the screen behind him. Pictures of himself and his bride's stepsister, tangled in silk sheets. Pictures he'd never known were taken, now weaponized to destroy everything."Don't touch m
Hostage, Stats And Horta
[Agreement has been logged. You have five minutes for orientation before you have to fight for your lives. Please pay attention, the system will not repeat itself.]Kate blanched, an annoyed look on her face as she tried but failed to keep the scowl from marring her features. She turned to Kenan, her expression clearly reading *can you imagine this thing?* He shrugged, his heart skipping a beat at the familiar way she looked at him. Then she frowned, huffed, and turned her face away sharply. For a moment Kate had forgotten she was dealing with a liar and a cheat. Her time and attention were better spent figuring something else out.[This World used to have life and was overseen by an impartial system. However a corruption began, its origins to this day unknown. But it swallowed every living being on this world, and buried structures and civilization under an endless forest of parasitic hive mind trees. The system has spent eons finding heroes from different universes to fight the encr
Wave 1 Cleared
The clearing was not that large, that much had been established. From where the pylon stood it was roughly ten to fifteen meters in circumference. Not claustrophobically small, but not large enough either. From the pylon to the edge, the distance was just about seven feet. Not enough space between them and whatever was coming.Thankfully, it seemed the system spawned the monsters on the opposite end. Kenan noticed black sludge peeling itself from the trees in front of them. He quickly grabbed Kate—much to her annoyance—and moved back a few feet, not daring to get close to the trees behind them, but putting extra distance between them and the sludge that was slowly shaping itself into something else."Keep your spear up. I won't let anything happen to you," Kenan called out."I can take care of myself!" Kate snapped at him. There was no time to argue anymore. Five creatures peeled themselves off from the sludge. It then seemed to sink into their bodies until five diminutive goblins wer
Wave 2 Cleared
3 Years Ago"Are you stupid or something, Kenan? You're abandoning everything you know, including your inheritance, because of a woman. Is she even worth it? Is this domestic life that you're so adamant about—is that how you want to exist? A lion will never give birth to a rat, yet here you are wanting to live like the rest of these cattle. You should get your priorities straight, brother."Kenan grunted in response, his hands still moving to fold his clothes into the luggage in front of him. "I'm tired, brother. Our whole lives have been one murder after the other. Is that the only thing we're good for? To be killers for our grandfather and father? We've done nothing meaningful with our lives, brother, and now I've found something... someone who makes me want to live. She makes me want to wake up in the morning and take a second to appreciate the warmth of the sun on my skin. For the first time ever, I can wake up not smelling of gunpowder and cold steel. I can sleep without the scre

Resolve
Kate felt the tingle of energy running through her body even as she tried and failed to get some sleep. Two hours wasn't a lot of time to rest—she wanted to make the best of it. But the increase to all her stats had left her body buzzing with energy the likes of which she'd never felt before. Unfortunately, it was throwing everything into overdrive, including her mind. There was no space for sleep as things stood. She sighed, trying her hardest to quiet her thoughts, but she couldn't.She turned onto her back, laying on the ruined mess of her wedding gown. The sky beyond was awash with colors and lights. She could see a massive bright moon peeking out from behind the clouds—a sign that dusk was approaching. But the skies themselves were completely bare. No birds, just that massive moon hidden behind fluffy white clouds. She sighed and turned to her side. Kenan was sitting in front of the pylon with his back to her. She scoffed. Was this his idea of giving her privacy? Well, if that
Goblins And Wild Dogs
Kate felt Kenan shake her awake. She groaned softly, her eyes crusted over and feeling like they were filled with sand. She'd barely gotten any rest, but she felt a little better. She turned her head to the side, noticing that Kenan had set the tent up and moved the rest of their supplies inside. Her spear and shield were placed beside her, and he had the bow in his hands. The quiver rested on his back, and the gladius hung at his waist. He was covered in a light sheen of sweat, and the black T-shirt hugged his fit frame, exposing the corded muscles she'd once spent hours observing. She turned her head away, a light dusting of red on her cheeks as she got to her feet. "Is it time? Are the waves here?"Kenan shook his head. "We have ten more minutes. I thought it was better to wake you now to give you some time to... well, wake up. Jumping into a fight directly from sleep wouldn't do wonders for your focus. Come on, you need to get ready." He straightened up and reached out a hand to h
Accident
"Basic Fire Bullet!"Kate screamed, stumbling back a single step as the spell circle appeared right in front of her. She felt the stirrings of her mana as it flowed through her, coalescing at a point around her heart. She gave it everything she had—her fear, her rage, her anguish. The fire bullet increased in size and exploded with the force of a shotgun going off. Kate felt the heat as flames from her own skill swallowed her hair and scorched her face. Then came the concussive blow from the explosion caused by the overloaded skill. The first thing Kate felt was her ears popping, then came the ringing, and then nothing else until her back hit the ground. She could hear Kenan screaming her name, but his voice sounded so far away. Then came the pain—so all-encompassing that everything else seemed to fade into the background. Darkness came not long after.Kenan saw the explosion. It was as if a grenade had gone off right in front of her face. The goblin was blasted apart with barely anyt
Hobgoblins
There was no time to move the rest of the bodies aside, so the goblins defeated from the last wave were still where they'd been dropped. Hopefully they'd serve more as impediments for the next wave than they would for Kenan.Just like the previous times, the basic goblins spawned first, peeling themselves free from the sludge and taking a few seconds to orient themselves. Kenan already expected this and fell back to his tried and tested method—using the bow and arrows. He pulled back on the string of the bow, and his eyes almost widened in shock. For one, he was pulling it back with far more ease and dexterity than before. It was shocking because all he'd raised was his Perception. But it seemed with it at level two, it was somehow enhancing his Physique stat. His vision sharpened as he let the first arrow loose. It punched a hole through a basic goblin's throat and traveled with enough force to clip the goblin behind it on the ear, taking a chunk with it. The goblin screeched in pain
Tough Enemies
5 YEARS AGOKenan stepped out of the restaurant with a dull look on his face. He was the last out, but only because torture was an unpleasant act and he really hated having an audience. He looked down at the cuff of his shirt where a bloodstain remained. He frowned. This was his favorite shirt—it would be hard to get this out. He looked to the left where the entrance to the restaurant's back alley stood.Cars passed by as people went about their evening, none of them aware of the massacre that had just been carried out. He turned his head to the other side and raised an eyebrow at the sight in front of him.A woman was being robbed… except it wasn't going as the robber planned. Kenan watched with both shock and amusement as the woman literally slapped the gun out of her attacker's hand. The man was astounded, even more so, when she whacked him over the head with her handbag. He cried out in pain, but she wasn't done as she pushed him until he smashed the back of his head against the w
