Chapter One: Misfortune
Jack Neuman sauntered across the stairs to the porch, his breath hitched. A weary expression plastered his face, his back hunched as he walked. Moreso, his eyes were filled with a storm of negative emotions.Things weren't supposed to end like this, he thought bitterly, eyes lingering on the wooden door before him.A week ago he had lost his job, everything collapsing before him. He'd tried looking for a job, but to no avail. So, he surrendered himself to fate.As if life weren't cruel enough, his mother's condition took a drastic turn. Two days ago, she was rushed to the hospital and the medical report was grim. She had brain cancer, in the terminal stage. Why did it have to happen? He gritted his teeth, hands trembling. It took him a few seconds to finally open the door and step into the living room.It had been cozy once, but now it was empty. He had sold everything in his possession to fund his wife's younger sister's university. If not for the loan sharks who came to his rescue,
Chapter Two: A Costly Price for Debt
Jack's hands gripped the steering wheel, eyes transfixed on the road. Right now he was speeding to the hospital, tears streaming endlessly from his eyes. As if Mary's betrayal was not enough, his mother had died on the same day. At this point, it was already clear the universe was against him. He'd finally lost everything that mattered dearly. Whatever spark of hope he had left… it had been snuffed out in a whiff, like a dying breath. The car tyres screeched to a halt when he reached the hospital premises, drawing the attention of everyone present. He jumped out briskly, forgetting to turn off the ignition, and rushed into the hospital. He arrived when the nurses were covering his mother’s corpse, Margaret weeping beside her. His sister's face was wetted by so many tears, eyes lowered. She didn't even look up, even when he came in. Jack faltered just as he entered the room, eyes fixated on the corpse. Even till her last moments, his mother still had her peaceful expression. Jack
Chapter Three: "Ding!"
It took a few seconds for Jack to recover from the shock. Winston and his men were not only taking his house as collateral, but his sister as well. His eyes drifted to their faces and beheld their lewd expression. Obviously, Margaret would be sexually assaulted, then sold into prostitution. “This wasn't part of the deal!” He gritted his teeth, his expression cold. “You can have the house, but not my sister!” Margaret, who was still confused, whimpered. Her eyes darted shakily between the men and his brother, trying to figure out what was going on. But the fear of being taken as collateral won over; in the end she shrank, body trembling like a leaf in the wind. Winston raised his eyebrow, a surprised expression creeping over his face. “You dare to go against me?” Jack clenched his fists, heart tightening. “It was written in the contract, Winston!” He reminded the man. “There's no way you're breaking the agreement!” “Is that so?” Winston glanced at his men. They all nodded and
Chapter Four: A Billion Dollar Bid
The van drove toward a warehouse, pulling over slowly. The three men alighted, one of them opening the door for Winston. As the burly loan shark stepped out of the van, it groaned… as if finally relieved of the weight.“Stupid van!” Winston cursed while fishing a cigarette from his pocket. “It's high time I got a new one for businesses like this…”Apart from being a loan shark boss, he also dabbled in other illegal activities like gambling, human trafficking, and fraud. He had several companies set up around the entire Kansas City area. He'd been prosecuted several times, but he always got acquitted by corrupt judges bribed beforehand. Hence, he got away with all his crimes.Even the police knew better not to mess with Winston; he had several friends and clients in the government, powerful firms, and companies. A single call from one of those individuals would make them lose their jobs for life.“Boss, should we take her into the warehouse?” One of his henchmen asked. He was the one w
Chapter Five: The Ghost Bid
The van drove to the VIP parking lot and pulled over. There were several Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG parked around, their bodies sleek. They belonged to the VIP clients who patronized the Night Garden.Browny and Winston alighted first, then the two other henchmen with Margaret. They were gripping her a little more tightly, overcome by excitement. They all wanted to see the man who had bidded $1 billion for the young girl. They walked toward the large building standing before them. It had ten floors, consisting of the nightclub, lounge, sex gallery, and VIP rooms.A lanky man walked out of the building, running toward them. He stopped before Winston, bending over to gasp for air.The three henchmen exchanged glances before looking at the girl. She was now tired from all the wriggling and thrashing, her body very still.“S-sorry boss!” The lanky man held his chest. “It's just that I had to run down here… the moment I heard you'd arrived!”“And why is that, Manager Josh?” Winston asked. The l
Chapter Six: A Fatal Mercy
The lounge was silent for a brief moment. Jack stood before Winston, a cold expression on his face. Behind him were the driver and Jane, who wore expressionless faces. It seemed they'd encountered situations like this, hardened into tough hides.Margaret, on the other hand, was bewildered. Her eyes kept darting between her brother and the two unfamiliar people with him. She still didn't understand the situation and wanted her brother to come clean. But, it seemed as though he was not ready yet. With narrowed eyes Jack stopped before Winston, looking into his eyes. The burly and arrogant man didn't seem so powerful now. He was shivering, breaking out in cold sweat.“W-we can still talk things through, Jack,” he said, finally finding the courage to speak. He gulped a mouthful of saliva afterward, afraid he'd be disposed of by Jack.“We can talk, huh?” Jack raised an eyebrow. “Does that work out well for your debtors?”Winston swallowed hard, lips trembling. “I-I can tell you everything!
Chapter Seven: An Aggressive Play
Winston sat in his Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, a cigarette in his mouth. A long coil of smoke billowed out of its ring, acrid and stiffling. His driver didn't seem to mind, his beady eyes fixated on the road. After hurrying out of Bluebird Hotels, he'd immediately called his driver to pick him up, lest Jack change his mind. The lingering fear from earlier made his body shiver, his lips trembling. They couldn't hold the cigarette anymore and parted, letting it drop to the rugged floor. He let out a deep sigh and clenched his trembling fists. How did that lad become rich overnight? How did he acquire that much power to treat a loan shark boss so dauntingly? You think you've won, huh? He scoffed, teeth clenched. “I'll make you pay for this humiliation!” He grunted, his voice raspy like dying breath. “You’ll soon know I can't be humiliated!”They soon arrived at his mansion, a massive structure made with tempered glass and steel beams. The outer and demarcation walls were opaque, giving him p
Chapter Eight: The System's Warning
Jack sat at the tempered glass table with his younger sister Margaret. The table was filled with several dishes, and waiters were coming in with more bowls. The girl's eyes drifted from one dish to another, pupils trembling. She looked up at Jack who appeared calm and confident, then back at the dishes. How did he get the money? She asked herself. He was bankrupt just a few hours ago…The waiters offered to help them full service, but Jack waved his right hand, “There'll be no need for that. Tell your manager we need some alone time.”“Y-yes sir!” They replied with trembling voices, as if rehearsed. Their eyes remained fixated on the ground till they exited through the elevator.Margaret observed everything, her mouth agape. She glanced at Brandon who was standing silently, hoping for some explanation. But the man remained still and silent. The other woman, Jane, had gone off to do some business deals which Jack had requested. So, she was nowhere to be found.“Is something wrong, Litt
Chapter Nine: The Devil's Cunning
An hour later, Jack and Margaret were done eating. The waiters came in afterward to clear the table. Again, they asked to offer more services, but he declined.“Now let's go to our new home,” Jack said, standing up regally. He then glanced at his younger sister, eyebrows raised. As if he'd realized something, he asked, “Do you want to rest first? Or do you still want more food?”Margaret glanced at her bloated stomach, patted it, and belched. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words only came out as satisfactory moans. That, itself, was an answer for Jack.“Alright,” he smiled. “Take your time then. I'll have to head out with Jane and Brandon.”“But… we just got in,” she finally spoke, struggling with her words. Her eyelids were drooping, a sign she was feeling drowsy. That's right, he thought. They hadn't slept well in those past few days. The bankruptcy and their mum's sickness had sucked every iota of rest from them. For the first time, they finally had a chance to do so.“I kn
Chapter Ten: Cold Plans
An hour later, Margaret's eyelids fluttered open, her eyes drifting across the lounge. She saw her brother sitting beside her, his legs crossed and arms spread on the backrest. Jane and Brandon were nowhere to be found, so she figured out he'd sent them on important errands.“You're finally awake, Little Sis,” Jack said, glancing at his gold Rolex wristwatch.“I'm sorry,” she said, sitting up. “I felt sleepy… I didn't know when I slept off.”“There's no problem with that,” he said. “You can sleep as long as you want.”Margaret smiled and rubbed her eyes, saying, “You seemed to be in a hurry earlier.”“Huh? Me?” He raised an eyebrow, wondering what she was talking about. Or was she still awake back then…?“Yes, I saw you,” she said. “You wanted to head out, but changed your mind.”“Oh,” Jack laughed, scratching the back of his head. “It's actually nothing…”“Jack,” she frowned, crossing her hands. “If you won't tell me the secret about your wealth, at least be honest about this.”“Well
