Chapter 1: The Commoner.
The wind howled along the edge of the cliff, dragging cloaks and tugging loose strands of hair like it wanted to pull them all into the sea below.Kael tasted blood. It filled his mouth, slipping down his throat each time he tried to breathe. He coughed, and it splattered across the gray stone beneath him. His fingers scraped against the ground, searching for something, anything, to hold onto, but there was nothing except gravel and the boots of the boys surrounding him.A sharp kick slammed into his ribs and Kael groaned as he folded in on himself.“I asked you a question, orphan!” one of them said.Ronan stood at the front, tall and broad-shouldered, his dark hair tied at the nape of his neck. He was the son of the most powerful mage in Astra and the dark look in his eyes mirrored his father’s. Beside him was Darius, thinner, stood right in front of Kael, fist clenched and ready to punch. Behind them, leaning lazily against a jagged rock, was Silas, watching as if this were nothing
Chapter 2: The Ancient One
“Son of Pelson! You are as good as dead.” The voice did not belong to Kael. It tore through the air, deep and ancient, shaking the cliff to its core. The wind twisted violently, pulling at cloaks and hair as if the world was coming to an end. Ronan staggered back, his eyes widening on seeing Kael in the middle of the light. “That… that’s not possible.” Darius swallowed hard, his hands already glowing with unstable magic. “That’s him. That’s Kael.” Silas did not speak, his wide and horrified eyes stayed locked on the golden figure hovering above the cliff. Kael floated in the air, his body wrapped in blinding gold. His eyes burned and narrowed on only one person. Ronan. The ground beneath the men cracked, stones and dust floated in the air. Ronan’s hands snapped forward. “Firebolt!” he shouted. A crackling streak of flame surged toward Kael, faster than any human could move. Kael’s eyes narrowed; without thinking, he raised a golden arm and it twisted, flaring a shield
Chapter 3 : The Curse Of The Unclaimed
Kael was falling. The wind screamed past his ears and the cliff above him grew smaller. His body twisted helplessly in the air as his heart raced wildly against his chest. He could see them. Ronan, Darius and Silas, looking down at him and watching him die.Kael tried to breathe, but the air would not come. His chest burned. His limbs felt heavy and soon he could almost feel the rock behind him and then…“You. Are. Mine.” A deep ancient voice growled deep in his ear, its words vibrating through his entire body. Kael jerked upright with a sharp gasp. Air flooded into his lungs as if he had been drowning. His chest rose and fell rapidly, his heart slamming hard against his ribs.He stayed still for a moment as sweat needed down his face. What happened to him? One minute he was falling to his death and the next he was….here? Kael blinked, his vision slowly clearing. He was lying on a bed.Not the thin straw mat from the maid quarters back at the academy, a real bed with soft foam an
Chapter 4: The Cursed One
The walk to Madam Natalie’s quarters was quiet. Eyes followed them from every angle. The corridors, to the balconies above, from the shadows between pillars, every trainee in the academy seemed to have heard. Whispers trailed behind Kael but he ignored them.At least he tried to. He was used to people whispering as he walked by, calling him a flameless fool but never had he had anyone look at him with fear instead of disdain. His bare feet moved against the polished floors, his jaw tight, his mind louder than the murmurs around him.‘They will stop at nothing to kill you.’ Zen had said that to his face a moment ago and Matalie had asked that they take this somewhere private and not to the hearing of the entire academy. The last thing she wanted was to frighten the trainees anymore than they already were. They reached a set of wide doors at the far end of a quiet wing and Natalie pushed them open.Kael stepped inside and stopped. The room was nothing like he expected. It was a hug
Chapter 5: The Council Of Mages
The horns did not stop. They echoed across the academy grounds, each call heavier than the last. The air itself seemed to tighten with every sound, pressing down on the stone walls and the people within them.Trainees gathered along the edges of the courtyard, whispering. Some stood with weapons in hand, others with magic flickering at their fingertips, but none dared step forward. They knew who had come and they dared not attack. The gates opened slowly and the Council of Mages entered as one.Robes of deep crimson and silver trailed behind them. Many of them had their mouths sewn shut and a few of them had their faces covered in white fabrics. Their presence alone silenced the courtyard. At their center walked Pelson, the Grand Mage Supreme. His robes shimmered faintly, threads of gold woven through them. His eyes scanned the trainees in disdain, wondering who in their sane mind thought training under Zen was noble. The n0bels have ever learned to weld their flames in his academy
Chapter 6: The Tempest
The gates closed behind them with a thud but Kael did not look back.Cold metal pressed against his wrist, the flame-bound cuff glowing faintly as it tightened with every step he took. The courtyard faded behind them and ahead stretched a long stone path that led down the mountain, winding between jagged cliffs and sparse trees bent by harsh winds. The sky above had turned dull, heavy clouds hanging low.The Council moved without speaking, their robes whispered against the ground, their presence suffocating. Kael walked in the middle of them. Despite his calm face and his rather bold steps, he was a mess inside. His heart slammed hard against his ribs, each beat loud in his ears. His fingers twitched, covered in sweat. Zen had told him what they would do to him. He knew that and yet, he wanted Alia found. She was bisvfamily but risking his life for her like this…Was that really all she was to him? A family member? Or a woman he couldn't afford to lose? He glanced up from his feet
Chapter 7: The Tyrant
The silence that followed was deafening. The mage behind him tightened his grip on the reins, and the horse came to a full stop. One by one, the rest followed until the entire procession stood still along the narrow path.Robes swept the ground as they faced Kael, their eyes hidden behind cloth and shadow, yet Keal felt the intensity of their gaze. “What did you say?” one of them asked.Kael’s throat felt dry. He could feel his pulse rising again, beating fast though his face remained neutral. “Nothing,” he said. The silence that followed told him they did not believe him.Another council member stepped forward, his voice colder. “You spoke. We heard you.”Kael stared ahead, refusing to meet their eyes. He knew he was loud enough for all to hear, there was not a single chance no one heard his voice. “Ypu hear them.” The voice in his head came again. His grip on the saddle tightened, now isn't the time! They were deliberating on whether or not to end his life and whatever is speakin
Chapter 8: The Escape
Lyra froze at the mouth of the underground passage, her hand tightening around the hilt of her sword as another roar tore through the academy above. She'd been following the council since they arrested Kael. Something didn't sit well with her when they took him and she knew that if the council didn't kill Kael, Ronan would. She'd been thinking of how to sneak in until she saw a dark cloud overshadow the academy and a creature, taller than anything she's ever seen, stormed the place. It wasn’t human. It wasn’t anything she had ever heard or seen before. The ground trembled with every step it took and the entire academy seemed to be focused on getting rid of it, whatever it was. She hurried down the passage only to hear another scream again but it wasn't from the academy, it was from the passage. “Kael!” Dust fell from the ceiling as she ran towards the cage, heart pounding and breathing heavy. The deeper she went, the heavier the air became. The entire place was oozing with magic
Chapter 9: The Escape #2
Lyra tried to stand. Her knees trembled before they obeyed her, boots scraping against cracked stone as she forced herself upright. Her sword felt heavier than it should have, her breath uneven, every muscle in her body screaming from Pelson’s pressure. Across the courtyard, the Tyrant roared again. The sound tore through the academy like a physical force. Lyra’s vision blurred for a second. “Kael…” she muttered. Where is he? A pulse of light answered from behind her. Lyra turned just in time to see it. Golden light erupted across the courtyard. The wind moved violently, bending inward as if the realm itself had noticed something waking up. Kael stood but he was not the same. His body was wrapped in that burning gold again, but this time it didn’t flicker or struggle, it flowed. Dark veins of energy traced beneath it like something ancient had opened its eyes inside him. His gaze lifted slowly and the entire battlefield came to a stop. Even the Tyrant stopped, eyes na
Chapter 10: The Journey
Kael woke to cold wind brushing against his face. For a long moment, he didn’t move. His body felt heavy, like stone had been tied to his limbs. The faint scent of pine drifted through the air and somewhere nearby, water trickled softly against rock. Slowly, he opened his eyes. Gray clouds stretched above him, drifting across a pale morning sky. Jagged mountain peaks surrounded him on every side and tall trees swayed below the cliff where he lay. Kael frowned weakly. Where was he? He pushed himself upright with a groan and immediately regretted it. Pain tore through his chest and shoulders, sharp enough to steal his breath. His hands trembled against the ground as flashes exploded behind his eyes. Golden light. Screaming. A creature roaring. Ronan… Kael froze as he recalled Pelson falling to the ground limp. His breathing quickened instantly. “No…” he whispered. Fragments returned violently now; fire tearing through Astra, the smell of blood, Ronan screaming, his own
