THE GENERAL’S LAST RETREAT
Cassar’s remaining soldier stood between Simon and the old command centre, but his rifle shook in his hands. A black demolition pack was strapped across his back, with wires running towards a control device inside Cassar’s hand.Simon understood the plan immediately. Cassar intended to reach the surface exit, trigger the explosives and bury the tunnel behind him. Everyone still inside the bunker would either die or remain trapped underground.“How did you get ahead of us?” Cassar demanded. He glanced behind him, searching for another route. “You were treating Crest when I sealed the prison chamber.”“You learned enough about this bunker to enter it,” Simon answered. “You never learned who designed its escape routes.”Cassar recovered some of his confidence and lifted the control device. “Move away from the exit. If my thumb leaves this switch, the tunnel collapses.”Simon remained where he was. “You claimed Romeo Benjamin ordered the fire that killed Toma and Elik and burnt my fish st
THE WELLS THEY NEVER OWNED
Two days after General Cassar’s arrest, the recovered archive records covered three long tables inside Arranguare headquarters. Police evidence labels had been attached to every contract, ledger and handwritten payment book removed from the bunker. Armed officers guarded the room, while cameras recorded everyone who entered or touched the documents. The two days had not passed quietly. Pierce obtained an emergency order stopping every tanker connected to the disputed oil wells from leaving the region. The order prevented the Marwicks from exporting more crude, but it did not give government officers immediate control of the well sites. The Marwicks still controlled the gates, machinery, workers and storage facilities. During the legal examination, their trucks had begun carrying drilling equipment towards private warehouses.Pierce closed the report in his hands. “We stopped their tankers at the export routes, but we have not stopped them from removing equipment inside the sites. Our
SEVENTY TWO HOURS TO TAKE BACK THE WELLS
Edgar however looked towards Pierce before answering. “He will challenge the order, delay the officers and accuse the government of stealing private property. While everyone argues at the gates, his people will remove anything valuable.” “They are already moving equipment,” Pierce said. “What happens when they realise they cannot remove everything?” Edgar’s face tightened. “Silas would rather destroy the wells than allow the government to use them as evidence against him. Each site has an emergency demolition plan disguised as an industrial safety measure.” Marcus stepped closer to him. “Are there explosives at the wells?” “There are charges near some pipelines and storage systems,” Edgar admitted. “They were supposedly installed to stop fires from spreading between sections. Silas can use them to damage the sites and blame the destruction on government forces.” Simon watched him carefully. “Why risk destroying the source of his wealth?” “Because the wells are no longer wea
THE COMPLIANCE OFFICER AT THE GATE
The following morning, Simon’s convoy approached the largest of the seven producing oil wells. Tall storage tanks stood beyond the perimeter fence, while pipes and heavy machinery covered the wide industrial field.Simon travelled in the first vehicle with Marcus and two government inspectors. Several vans carrying Arranguare engineers followed them. Pierce’s police vehicles remained farther behind.Pierce did not want the operation to resemble a military invasion. Most of his armed officers stopped at nearby road junctions, where they could prevent equipment from leaving without frightening the workers inside the field. The convoy reached the main entrance shortly after eight o’clock. A high steel gate blocked the road, and more than twenty Marwick guards stood behind it.Workers had also gathered near the fence. Some wore safety clothing, while others had left the production buildings to see why government vehicles were outside.Simon stepped out with the recovery order in his hand.
THE COMPLIANCE OFFICER DIES HERE
Simon’s expression remained calm. “Pierce will arrest you for obstructing a lawful recovery. The engineers will enter under police protection, and every damaged record will become another charge against the Marwicks.”The regional director looked towards Pierce. “Will you allow this ordinary employee to threaten everyone working here?”Pierce rested one hand near his weapon. “He gave you an opportunity to obey the order. I suggest you use it.”The director walked away from the gate and removed his phone. He turned his back on Simon, but Marcus saw him opening an encrypted contact.“He is calling Silas,” Marcus said quietly. “Do you want us to force the entrance before they bring reinforcements?”“No,” Simon answered. “Let Silas decide how much more evidence he wants to give us.”Several minutes later, Pierce received confirmation from the rear road. His officers had stopped the three trucks without resistance and recovered stolen pumping controls, unrecorded crude oil and financial re
KONG MEETS THE RED BUTCHER 1
“The compliance officer dies here.”Kong’s threat carried across the central yard. The oil workers moved closer to the production buildings, while the armed guards tightened their circle around Simon and his companions.Marcus stepped forward, but Simon stopped him with one hand. “Attacking the man appointed to coordinate this recovery will be treated as armed resistance against the government,” Marcus warned. “Commissioner Pierce is standing outside that gate with enough officers to arrest everyone here.”Kong glanced towards the workers and smiled. “Pierce will not order an attack while innocent employees are trapped inside. By the time he enters, your compliance officer will already be dead.”“You assume the workers will support your story,” Simon said. He looked towards the frightened employees. “How many of them are willing to lie about a murder and spend the rest of their lives protecting Silas Marwick?”Several workers lowered their eyes. Kong’s smile weakened when none of them
THE FALL OF THE MARWICK'S STRONGEST MAN
Kong pushed himself upright, but Simon reached him before he could recover. A strike landed beneath his jaw, followed by another against the centre of his chest.Kong stumbled backwards. Simon had changed completely. His movements remained controlled, yet they arrived from angles Kong could not predict. The guards stared in silence. They had expected Kong to humiliate an ordinary low ranking government compliance worker. Instead, Simon was forcing the Marwicks’ most feared fighter across the yard.“What is this?” the regional director demanded. “Kong, stop playing with him!”Kong no longer heard the mockery behind him. He could barely defend himself. He threw a strike towards Simon’s injured shoulder, but Simon caught his wrist and twisted it behind his back. Kong escaped by driving his head backwards, then turned with a killing blow aimed at Simon’s temple.Simon lowered himself beneath the attack. His palm struck Kong’s elbow while his shoulder drove into the man’s chest. The counte
THE WELLS WILL BURN
The wells had not caught fire yet, but the alarms warned Simon that they were close.Thick black smoke climbed from a machinery shed near the central pumping station. Red warning lights flashed along the pipelines, while the frightened workers rushed away from the production buildings.Pierce released Kong’s collar and stood. “All workers must report to the eastern assembly area. Officers, clear every road leading away from the storage tanks.”His men responded immediately. Some began directing the workers, while others collected the weapons surrendered by the Marwick guards. The regional director remained restrained beside the security office. His earlier pride had disappeared as he stared towards the growing smoke.“This was not part of my order,” he said. “Mr Marwick only told me to keep you outside.”Marcus faced him. “You locked us inside with armed men. Do not pretend you are innocent because Silas decided to destroy the field without warning you.”An Arranguare engineer ran tow
TEN MINUTES TO DESTRUCTION
Kong glanced towards the smoke. He understood that Silas had used him exactly as Cassar had used the mercenaries inside the bunker.“There is a maintenance entrance beneath the eastern loading platform,” Kong finally said. “Silas used it whenever he wanted to enter the control floor without passing the workers.”Simon studied his face. “Where does it lead?”“The tunnel divides beneath the station,” Kong answered. “The left route reaches the control floor. The right route enters the loading yard behind the records room.”Pierce stood and signalled to three officers. “You are coming with us.”Kong shook his head. “I cannot walk properly after what he did to me.”“You do not need to walk,” Pierce replied. “You will draw the route for my officers and pray that the information is correct.”Simon looked towards Marcus. The engineers were already running towards the external controls with their equipment.“Pierce and I will enter through the maintenance passage,” Simon said through his commu
THE MAN WHO ENTERED UNARMED
Simon removed the pistol from his waist and placed it on the floor outside the control room. The timer above the door continued falling as he raised his empty hands.Silas watched him through the reinforced glass. “Step inside and close the door behind you. If Pierce attempts to follow, the hostages die.”Simon entered without answering. The heavy door closed behind him, leaving Pierce and the other officers outside.Six workers remained seated near the main control desk with their hands tied. One guard stood behind them with a rifle, while the second moved towards Simon.Silas held the black detonator close to his chest. His earlier fear had disappeared now that Simon was unarmed and trapped inside the room.“You carried files and served as an ordinary low-ranking compliance officer,” Silas said. “Did you truly believe one government order could make you equal to me?”Simon glanced towards the falling timer before facing him. “Every honest job I performed carried more honour than eve
