THE FALL OF THE MARWICK EMPIRE
The second guard reached for the fallen rifle, but Simon kicked it beneath the control desk. He struck the man beneath the jaw and sent him crashing across a row of metal chairs. The first guard attacked again with the knife. Simon blocked the blade, twisted it from his hand and drove his shoulder into the man’s chest. The guard collapsed beside the control panel. He tried to rise, but Simon placed one foot against his wrist and prevented him from reaching another weapon. The man stared up at Simon. He had served with private military companies and had fought trained soldiers, but he had never seen anyone move with such control. “What kind of man are you?” he asked through painful breaths. Simon pushed the knife beyond his reach. “The kind Silas should never have threatened.” The six hostages watched without speaking. They did not know Simon’s history, but the man standing between them and the guards did not resemble an ordinary compliance officer. Silas looked at both defeated
THE MAN WHO CAME BACK WOUNDED
Two days after the fall of the Marwicks, television stations across Betford showed the national flag flying above the recovered oil fields.Footage of Silas and Damon being placed inside separate police vehicles appeared repeatedly. Government officers guarded the production buildings, while petroleum engineers inspected the machinery that the Marwicks had attempted to destroy.“The national petroleum agency has confirmed the recovery of nineteen oil wells illegally controlled by companies connected to the Marwick family,” a reporter announced. “Commissioner Pierce led the operation with support from government security forces.”Simon’s name did not appear anywhere in the report. The authorities described him only as an unidentified civilian who had assisted the investigation. Pierce had removed his name from the public statement at Simon’s request. The workers, officers and engineers who witnessed what happened had also been instructed not to discuss the operation. Silas and Damon we
THE MAN CLARA CAME SEARCHING FOR
“You came back,” she said. “Why did you ever leave without telling me?”Simon noticed the weakness that remained in her movements. “You should still be resting.”Clara was about to answer when she saw Genevieve beside Simon and the blood beneath his opened shirt. Her hurt turned into alarm. She hurried towards him. “What happened to your shoulder?”“It is nothing serious.”Clara looked directly at Genevieve. “How badly is he injured?”“The wound has reopened,” Genevieve answered. “And he has been refusing to explain how he received it.”Clara faced Simon again. The relief she had felt moments earlier disappeared beneath growing anger.“Who did this to you?”Her relief was so open that Simon did not immediately know how to answer.Clara crossed the room quickly. “One of the nurses said you had returned, but I thought she was mistaken. Where have you been all this while?”“Completing some work.”“For several days?”“Yes.”Her attention moved towards his exposed shoulder.“What happened
THE GENERAL WHO FAILED TO RECOGNISE HIS COMMANDER
“Who is he?” General Victor Ashbourne asked.Clara appeared surprised by the question.“Dad, this is Simon Gallagher.”Victor waited for more. When Clara realised he did not recognise the name, she continued.“He is the man who saved my life when I almost died in this hospital when I was rushed in on an emergency.”Victor’s expression changed slightly. He had heard that an unidentified man assisted during Clara’s medical emergency, but the explanations provided by the hospital had been incomplete. He looked Simon over again.“You are the man who used silver needles on my daughter?”“I am,” Simon answered.Victor expected nervousness or immediate respect. Simon offered neither. He remained seated while Genevieve secured the final part of the bandage.“What kind of doctor are you?” Victor asked.“I am not employed as a doctor.”Ethan frowned. “Then why were you treating Clara?”“Because the doctors present could not stop her condition from worsening.”Genevieve glanced towards Ethan, bu
GRATITUDE IS NOT ACCEPTANCE
Simon’s expression returned to its earlier calmness. He respected what Victor had done during the war, but old achievements did not give the general permission to judge another man by his clothing or family name.“I heard Clara call you Father.” Simon said.“Then you should understand that very few people address me with your level of disrespect.”Simon stood carefully. He was slightly taller than Victor expected. Nothing changed in his expression as he faced the older man.“I did not disrespect you. I refused to pretend my family name determined whether Clara deserved to live.”Victor’s jaw tightened.“Gratitude does not excuse arrogance.”“And authority does not turn an unnecessary question into an important one.”Clara moved between them before her father could respond.“Father, Simon here saved me when everyone else believed there was nothing more they could do. You should be thanking him.”Victor looked at his daughter, then at Simon.“You may have saved Clara, but do not mistake
SAVING HER BECAME HIS CRIME
“The amount does not matter.”“Six million dollars is more than generous,” Victor replied.“Then offer it to someone who requires your generosity.”Victor leaned closer. “Very few men would reject that much money.”“If I had wanted payment, I would have negotiated the price before saving your daughter.”Silence entered the ward.Pa Gallagher watched from his bed without interfering. Victor Ashbourne believed that his money was large enough to change Simon’s life. He had no idea that the man refusing their cheque controlled the Arranguare Gold Consortium.Victor pushed the cheque towards him again.“Do not pretend that money means nothing to you.”Simon left it untouched. ““There is no amount you can offer that I need badly enough to sell the meaning of what I did.”Clara looked at him with open admiration.Genevieve remained beside the medical cabinet, listening quietly. Simon had refused an opportunity that many people would have fought to receive.Victor’s suspicion increased.Men w
THE MIRACLE DOCTOR STAND'S ACCUSED
Victor’s attention shifted towards Genevieve. “Are you saying Coleman’s treatment placed my daughter in greater danger?”“I am saying Clara continued deteriorating under that treatment,” Genevieve answered. “Simon identified what was happening and stopped the collapse. Her medical records will confirm it.”One of the administrators glanced uncomfortably towards Coleman. The administrator’s reaction did not escape Victor. General Victor turned towards the man, although Coleman held the report. “Why does your colleague appear uncomfortable, Doctor? Is there something in Clara’s records you have failed to mention?”Coleman’s eyes moved towards the administrator, warning him not to answer. Genevieve noticed the threat.Coleman immediately understood the danger. Clara opened her arms as though her strength should have ended the argument.“I can walk unaided, breathe without pain and remember everything clearly. What further proof are you demanding now?”Several people turned towards Col
THE SUMMONS THAT THREATENED HIS SECRET
Victor’s expression softened slightly. “Of course I am happy.”“Then why are all of you attacking the person who saved me?”“Because survival does not remove every question,” Victor answered. “I need to know what he placed inside your body and whether it can harm you.”“The needles are no longer inside me.”“That is not the point.”“It is exactly the point!” Clara replied. “Simon saved me after your famous doctor failed. Now Dr Coleman is attempting to punish him for succeeding.”Coleman’s eyes flashed with anger.Victor returned his attention to Simon.“I will not accuse you without evidence. But until the hospital completes its examination, you will remain away from Clara.”“You cannot decide that for me,” Clara said.“I am your father.”“And I am alive because of Simon.”Victor signalled to Ethan and the security officers.“Take her back to her recovery room.”Clara refused to move.Ethan reached towards her arm, but she pulled away.“Do not touch me.” She said.Simon then spoke. “
THE TIMELINE COLEMAN TRIED TO HIDE
The following morning, Simon entered the hospital’s main review chamber with Genevieve beside him.His wounded shoulder remained beneath a clean bandage, but he showed no sign of discomfort.A long table occupied the centre of the chamber. The hospital’s chief medical director sat at its head, surrounded by senior members of the hospital board. The chairman of the board, the director of medical ethics, chief nursing officer, legal adviser and several senior specialists were also present.Clara sat beside General Victor and Ethan on the opposite side of the room. She smiled when Simon entered.Victor noticed the exchange but said nothing.Dr Andrew Coleman arrived moments later carrying the same medical report he had brought into Pa Gallagher’s ward. He greeted the board members confidently before taking his seat. The chairman of the board looked around the chamber and greeted them.“This review concerns the emergency treatment of Miss Clara Ashbourne inside Ward Nine,” he announced. “
COLEMAN'S REPORT BETRAYED HIM
“It contains every relevant medical development,” Coleman answered.Genevieve placed a sealed folder on the table. “Then it should match the original records.”The chairman signalled for an administrator to collect the folder.Genevieve remained standing. “These readings were printed directly from the monitoring system before Dr Coleman submitted his report,” she explained. “They contain the complete record of Clara’s vital signs during the emergency.”Coleman looked at the folder. “You had no authority to remove those records.”“I did not remove them. I preserved copies because I suspected you would change the account.”A murmur passed between the board members. The chief medical director studied the first page before passing it to the ethics director.“The patient’s condition was unstable when she arrived,” he said.“Yes,” Coleman answered. “That supports my report.”The chief medical director continued reading. “The initial instability is not the problem. Her neurological responses
