Chapter 1: The Edge of the Abyss
The summoning circle flashed with a bright golden light that burned through Valens closed eyes. He felt the hard stone beneath him. A moment before he was sitting at his classroom desk. A collective gasp echoed around him. People started coughing and whispering in panic.Valen opened his eyes. He blinked away the afterimages of the flash. He was kneeling in a cathedral. The walls were made of marble. Stained glass windows showed winged warriors fighting horned shadows. Armored knights surrounded the runic circle. Their faces were hidden behind silver visors. An old man in flowing robes stood on a raised dais. He held a staff with a glowing crystal on top. A man on a gilded throne wore a crown and looked bored.Valen stood up. His whole senior class was there. Thirty students looked scared, confused or shocked. The man on the throne said, "Silence." His voice was heavy. It forced some students back to their knees. The old man tapped his staff on the marble floor. A resonant chime fille
Chapter 2: The Alchemy of Survival
The air was getting smaller. Valen watched his space with a calm feeling that didn't match his fast heartbeat. The purple fog of the Dead Zone. Swirled like a living ocean pushing against the clean air he had made. It was a death testing his safe zone.He sat up hurting as a pain went through his ribs. The kinetic extraction had saved him. It still hurt. He looked at his hands. In his hand was a small round violet gem. In his left was a crystal ball that vibrated with a strong hum.He had pulled out ideas. He had touched the world found an idea and pulled it out making it real. High Priest Alaric called it a scavengers skill. A trash collectors ability. Valen laughed dryly. If this was what a defective class looked like the Solarian Empire had no idea how the world worked.Purple fog crept over his boot. The leather started to hiss and break hurting his foot. He thought about his system. Opened his status.A blue screen showed up.Host: ValenClass: Utility (Defective)NoneLevel: 1H
Chapter 3: The Gathering of Shadows
Valen woke up to complete silence. It was a change from the loud winds and screaming that he had heard when he first got to this world. He did not get up away. Instead he kept his eyes closed. Checked how his body was feeling. His muscles felt really weak like they had been replaced with wires. He was extremely tired from using up all his stamina.. Beneath the tiredness he felt something new and strange. The level-ups from the Miasma Hound had made his body stronger fixing the damage in his lungs and healing the burns on his skin.Valen opened his eyes. The sky above the broken fortress was still a mess of purple smoke.. Down in the courtyard the air was clean and fresh. It was like a little bubble in a bad world. In the middle of the stone floor a big purple crystal was pulsing with a light. It had the stuff from the air inside it.Valen sat up. Checked his status.Host: ValenClass: Utility (Defective)NoneLevel: 4Health: 78/100Mana: 0/0Stamina: 12/100His stamina was coming bac
Chapter 4: The Language of the Enemy
The purple mist moved quietly over the grey skin of the sleeping warrior. It came out of a break Valen had made in the poisonous cloud. It was a sight, a human teenager keeping a demon soldier alive by giving him the very poison that should have hurt him badly.Valen did not blink. He sat on a stone box, his hands on his knees thinking about what to do. If the demon attacked when he woke up Valen would quickly take away the friction between the demons boots and the stone floor. This would make it hard for the demon to move forward.. Valen would take away the oxygen from the air around the demons face. This would make it hard for the demon to breathe. Being prepared was more important than being hopeful.Three hours passed before the silver marks on the demons chest started to glow. The deep cut in his side stopped leaking purple liquid. The skin started to heal because of the poisonous cloud. The demon made a growling sound. His eyes opened. They were completely red without any color
Chapter 5: The Crucible of the Convoy
The purple landscape was a blur as Valen and Zarek moved through the obsidian canyons. They had to be really careful when they were moving through the Dead Zone at speeds. Every step was a deal. They had to think about how dense the ash was under their boots and avoid the shifting cracks that let out superheated pockets of air.Zarek was running with heavy strides. He was like a soldier and his dark hair was blowing in the faint purple light that was coming through the sky. Valen was keeping up with him. His body was stronger now because of the levels he had gained. He did not feel the burning in his lungs or the struggle to balance that he had felt on his day in this world. His movements were cold and precise. He was only thinking about what needed to be done.Ahead the red flares from the Solarian vanguard were starting to fade out. They were leaving trails of red smoke that were cutting through the thick purple clouds. The air was getting heavier. It was vibrating with a strange st
Chapter 6: The Shattered Divine
A column of white light came down from the sky. It was not hot like fire or loud like thunder. It was silent and heavy. Moved really fast. The purple fog around it just disappeared, leaving an empty space.Valen stood under the light. He thought fast like a computer. He knew that if he tried to move the air would tear him apart. If he used an item it would explode in his hand.He had one hundred and thirty points of energy left. He needed to think of something that would not fight the light. Change what it was.Valen thought, "System take the idea of speed out of the light."A red warning screen appeared in front of him. It said that the light was really powerful and would use up all his energy. It might even hurt his body.Valen said, "Do it."He stamped his feet on the ground. The world became silent. The light stopped moving. Turned into a big shiny tower that went from the ground up to the clouds.Valen fell to one knee gasping for breath. His energy went down to five points. Bloo
Chapter 7: The Amnesiac Core
The room was really quiet except for the sound of water dripping from a broken pipe in the corner. Valen sat still on a crate his arms crossed, staring at the girl on the table. Her silver hair was spread out like moonlight on the stone. Her hazel eyes were wide looking around the room and then at Valen. She seemed scared.Who am I she said, trying to sit up. Her voice was shaking. She pushed against the table. Her arms were weak. Valen did not help her. He just kept looking at her.Valens system was checking her.Target: Autonomous Vessel 04 (Disconnected)Level: 1 (Suppressed)Health: 110/110Stamina: 15/15Mana: 0/0 (Celestial Core Dormant)Status: Severe Cognitive Dissociation, Identity Void, Network Deprivation. The system said she had been reset. The thing that was controlling her was gone. Valen had cut the connection. What was left was her body, like a computer with no program. You are what the Solarian Empire calls an Autonomous Vessel Valen said. You were sent to do a job..
Chapter 8: The Systemic Inversion
The digital countdown timer was still there in front of Valen. The numbers were crimson. Seemed to be bleeding light into the dark air of the tower.Fifty-nine seconds. The black fire on the walls wasn't hot. When a spark touched the white steel of Valens garb it didn't burn; it just erased the color leaving a space. The air tasted like nothing. Valens lungs felt like they were seizing up.His energy bar was stuck at zero because of the quarantine aura. His health was going down bit by bit.Health: 235/250Health: 230/250Valen didn't look at the door. The barrier blocking the exit was like a wall of equations. If he tried to force his way his body would be deleted. He had to think like a programmer dealing with a problem. The system saw him as a threat a contagion that was messing up its operation. He looked at the face in the Aetherite crystal. The golden lines were moving fast planning the shutdown of the Iron Basin. The quarantine was spreading, a plague that would clean up the wh
Chapter 9: The Logistics of Defiance
The boundary expansion changed the sound in the three-mile valley. The loud screeching wind through chasms was gone. A deep hum replaced it. The sound came from an engine running smoothly. The Thrones silver dome didn't just block the Dead Zones poison; it pulled it in through many small currents. The dome drew the vapor into the fortresss foundation.Valen stood on the keeps highest parapet. His palms rested on the granite. The stone felt warm not cold and brittle like before. The cores infusion changed its molecular structure. The granite was now dense and slightly textured. When Valen closed his eyes he sensed the three-mile perimeter. He felt the weight of three transport carriages in the courtyard. He felt the breathing of the Earth Drakes in their stables. He sensed the heartbeats of thirty-five people in the barracks.System notification: Territory synchronization complete. Current upkeep: 0 stamina. The system uses environmental toxicity conversion. Excess energy storage: 1,40
Chapter 10: The Severed Sun
The line did not make a sound when Grand Inquisitor Kael crossed it. The air just felt different like a drop in temperature. To a soldier it would have been hard to notice.. To Kael, whose whole being was connected to the global grid it was like being plunged into a deep dark ocean.Kael stopped walking. His big Aetherite shield, the Sun-Forged Bulwark started to shudder. The bright plasma that was dancing along his blade suddenly got smaller shrinking from a big aura to a tiny flickering flame. For the time in ten years Kaels mind was completely silent. The usual chatter of millions of subroutines, geographical data and tracking vectors was gone. Instead there was a bronze-tinted static that hovered at the edges of his consciousness. He lowered his visor. Looked at Valen, who was standing a few hundred yards away. Valen was not moving his garb blending in with the dark earth. What kind of sorcery is this? Kaels voice boomed through the canyon. You think you can hide under a dome of s
