The boundary expansion changed the sound in the three-mile valley. The loud screeching wind through chasms was gone. A deep hum replaced it. The sound came from an engine running smoothly. The Thrones silver dome didn't just block the Dead Zones poison; it pulled it in through many small currents. The dome drew the vapor into the fortresss foundation.

Valen stood on the keeps highest parapet. His palms rested on the granite. The stone felt warm not cold and brittle like before. The cores infusion changed its molecular structure. The granite was now dense and slightly textured. When Valen closed his eyes he sensed the three-mile perimeter. He felt the weight of three transport carriages in the courtyard. He felt the breathing of the Earth Drakes in their stables. He sensed the heartbeats of thirty-five people in the barracks.

System notification: Territory synchronization complete. Current upkeep: 0 stamina. The system uses environmental toxicity conversion. Excess energy storage: 1,400 units per hour.

The notification appeared in a bronze-colored window. Valen analyzed the numbers. The fortress was self-sustaining. He wasn't a bottleneck for his survival. He could leave, launch attacks or focus on material synthesis.

Noa approached from the stairwell. Valen didn't need to turn around. The fortresss spatial grid tracked her weight and stride. Noa walked onto the parapet. Her bare feet were silent on the modified granite. She wore a dark grey tunic. Her hazel eyes were clear. Her posture was still.

The light vanguard set up an encampment at the Iron Basins mouth Noa said. They are four miles outside our border. They deployed three siphons. The miasma in the ravines slows their heavy cavalry.

How many Valen asked.

Three hundred light infantry, eighty armored sentinels and twelve high-tier paladins under the Grand Inquisitor Noa replied. Kael isn't with the body. He is moving ahead using his awakening crystal to synchronize with network lines. He is looking for the point where the administrative thread was broken. He is looking for me.

He will find a fortress instead Valen said. Let him look. The longer they navigate the ravines the more time we have to convert raw materials into assets. Tell me about Kaels combat profile. You were connected to the synchronization grid during his awakening sequence. What are his primary variables?

Noa stepped up to the battlements. Her small hands gripped the stone beside Valen. Her brow furrowed slightly as she navigated her subconscious.

His class is the Holy Avenger of the First Order she said. It is a legendary-grade path that replaces mana with Solarized Plasma. His physical attacks inflict damage and introduce a high-temperature purification vector. His passive ability, the Aura of the Unblemished neutralizes environmental status effects within a fifty-meter radius. The miasma cannot touch him.

A temperature-based purification vector Valen murmured. It means his combat style relies on output and high-frequency energy disruption. If you strip away the heat and light what remains?

A level thirty physical framework Noa answered. His strength and agility parameters are three times higher than a demonic vanguard soldier. He carries the Sun-Forged Bulwark, a shield made of Aetherite that can absorb up to ten thousand units of kinetic force.

An entity that relies on network feeds and standardized energy laws Valen corrected her. In this valley those laws no longer apply. Go downstairs Noa. Tell Zarek and Garrok to meet me in the armory. We have twelve thousand kilograms of ore to parse before the inquisitor reaches our gate.

Noa looked at Valen then bowed her head slightly and turned back toward the stairwell.

Valen remained on the parapet for another minute. He reviewed his parameters after reaching level twenty-one.

Character Status Screen:

* Name: Valen

* Class: Concept Extractor (Sovereign Unique)

* Level: 21

* Health: 350/350

* Stamina: 250/250

* Mana: Nonapplicable

* Available Stat Points: 0

* Current Concepts in Inventory:

. The concept of Luminance

+ The concept of Weight

+ Schematic of the Siphon Vector

+ 12,000 Kilograms of Raw Aetherite Ore

+ 500 Kilograms of Imperial Structural Steel

+ 20 High-Grade Steel Broadswords

+ 40 Short Spears

+ 10 Heavy Repeating Crossbows

The foundation was solid. A level twenty-one utility class couldn't fight a level thirty vanguard directly. Valen had no intention of fighting Kael on those terms. He would fight through manufacturing.

Valen descended the stone stairs. The air grew cooler in the levels. He entered the vaulted chamber that served as his primary logistics laboratory.

Zarek was already there standing beside the bronze Aetherite battery. Garrok stood a feet away his massive lupine frame towering over the crates of weapons. Both men turned as Valen entered, their expressions serious.

* Sovereign Zarek said. Garroks warriors moved the ore into the secondary vault. The five imperial prisoners confirmed what Noa sensed—Kael is leading the vanguard personally. They believe we are a splinter cell that discovered an old imperial weapon cache.

Let them believe that Valen said. The empires strength is their predictability. They believe that because they have levels and standardized classes they own the definition of combat. We are going to change that definition. Garrok bring me three crates of the Aetherite ore.

The lupine beastman signaled two of his warriors. They hauled three wooden crates into the room. They dumped the contents onto the stone floor before Valen.

Valen looked at the weapons on the table. They were imperial steel.

* System Valen thought. Extract the concept of Structural Rigidity from the steel.

His stamina bar dropped by thirty points. A pale grey vapor rose from the blades. The broadswords, on the table did not change shape. Their metallic luster vanished.

* Item Modified: Pliable Iron Blanks (Quantity: 20).

Now Valen turned to the crates of Aetherite ore. The green crystals were packed with energy that had been pulled from the earths mantle.

In its form the ore was unstable and not safe to handle for long periods without special gloves.

* Extract Valen commanded, targeting the ore.

* Extract the concept of Volatile Energy Release.

A huge surge of light erupted from the crates coiling around Valens arms.

His energy level dropped by eighty points leaving him at one hundred and forty.

The green light condensed between his palms forming a pressurized orb of green energy that hissed and crackled.

The rocks in the crates below turned grey crumbling into sand that spilled through the seams of the wood.

* Item Acquired: Concentrated Aetherite Energy Essence (Grade: Epic).

Valen did not pause. He took the orb and brought it over to the table where the twenty pliable iron blanks lay.

He extended his hand pulling the grey beads of structural rigidity back out of his inventory.

* System initiate a three-way material synthesis Valen thought.

* Targets: Pliable Iron Blanks, Concentrated Aetherite Energy Essence, Structural Rigidity.

* Boundary alignment: Sharpness Vector.

The laboratory was filled with a blinding, emerald glare that caused Zarek and Garrok to shield their eyes.

Valens energy level dropped by seventy points.

Under his hands the iron blanks absorbed the fluid and the grey beads simultaneously.

The metal did not melt; it reorganized.

The dull iron transformed into a translucent green alloy that looked like solid emerald.

The hilts and guards of the swords absorbed the energy turning a dark matte black.

* Item Created: Aetherite Vibro-Blades (Grade: Rare / Quantity: 20).

* Properties: High Kinetic Resonation, Energy Discharge, Weightless Balance.

Valen picked up one of the blades.

It felt weightless in his hand.

He did not swing it; he merely pressed the edge against the iron rim of an empty supply crate.

The vibrating green edge sliced through the iron band smoothly.

Garrok let out a gasp.

* Sovereign... That blade didn't even meet resistance.

* With weapons like this my warriors can shear through the sentinels heavy shields easily.

* They will do that Valen said.

* Take them Garrok.

* Distribute them to your twenty fighters.

* Zarek will spend the twelve hours drilling them.

Garrok exited the room quickly.

Valen turned back to the remaining materials.

He had ten repeating crossbows and forty short spears left to modify.

His energy level stood at seventy points.

Zarek approached the table.

* The weapons are magnificent, Sovereign. What of the Grand Inquisitor?

* Kael’s armor is not silver plate.

* His Sun-Forged Bulwark is designed to absorb energy discharges.

* I know Valen said.

* Kael is a system.

* To defeat Kael we must introduce a variable that his system cannot parse as an asset.

He reached into his inventory pulling out a matte-black marble.

* This marble contains the mass of ten thousand kilograms of structural steel.

* System Valen thought.

* Target: The ammunition reservoirs of the ten repeating crossbows.

* Modify the steel bolts within the magazines.

He placed his hand on the crossbow his right hand holding the black marble of weight.

* Extract he commanded.

* Inject target concept into the tips of the two hundred steel bolts stored within the magazines.

A dark shadow seeped from the marble flowing along Valens arm and into the mechanical mechanisms of the crossbows.

The steel bolts inside the magazines turned a deep lightless black.

* Item Modified: Gravitational Impact Bolts (Quantity: 200).

* Properties: Spatial Equilibrium, Kinetic Inversion.

* Give these crossbows to the beastmen Valen instructed Zarek.

* Position them on the cliffs.

* Their only target is Kael and his twelve paladins.

Zarek bowed his head.

* It will be an execution, Sovereign.

Now let us deal with the five prisoners Valen said.

He walked down the corridor that cut deep into the bedrock of the valley.

The walls here were old, green moss clinging to the stones.

At the end of the hall stood five reinforced iron doors, each guarded by a beastman warrior.

Valen entered the cell.

Inside an imperial sentinel was chained to a stone chair.

His face was covered in bruises.

* You... You are the anomaly the sentinel rasped.

* The captain said you were a rat from the waste.

The spires... The spires said you don't exist.

A ghost that broke your vanguard squad Valen said.

Your Grand Inquisitor is four miles away.

Tell me about the defense lines behind the Great Wall.

If Kael fails to return what is the automated response protocol, from the capital?

The sentinel let out a laugh. If Kael fails? A Holy Avenger of the First Order does not fail against waste rats. He is the chosen blade of the High Core. If he falls the system will classify this sector as a Calamity-Grade Threat Zone. They won't send another patrol. They will activate the siphons at maximum output. This will vent toxicity into this basin to turn the stone into liquid glass. You can't win, anomaly. You're fighting the law of the world.

The very law of the world is what I edit for a living Valen said coldly. He put out his hand. Touched the sentinels forehead.

Extract Valen thought. I need to get the layout of the border capital from the prisoners memory.

A sharp line of data came out of the sentinels eyes. It coiled around Valens hand. The soldiers body stiffened. His jaw locked as his consciousness was mapped by the systems extraction protocol. His stamina pool dropped by thirty points.. The return was huge. A detailed blueprint of the border citadel solidified in Valens mind. This included wall thickness siphon core placement and troop distribution schedules.

Item Acquired: Geographical Memory Slate: Sector Seven Border Citadel (Grade: Rare).

Valen pulled his hand back. The sentinel slumped forward against his chains. He was unconscious but alive. Valen didn't need to question the prisoners. Their memories would be data. He had the layout of the enemys home base. He knew where the central siphons were anchored.

He walked out of the cell. Zarek followed close behind him.

Sovereign the demon scout said. If what the prisoner said is true if the empire will turn the basin into liquid glass upon Kaels defeat then our victory here will trigger our execution from a distance. We can't defend against a siphon discharge.

We won't have to defend against it Valen said. We aren't going to wait for them to turn the dial. The moment Kael’s vanguard is neutralized we're going to use his captured Aetherite shield and the administrative core. We'll launch an offensive against the border citadel itself. We will harvest their siphons. We'll integrate them into the Throne.

Zarek stopped on the stairs. His dark greatsword hummed. He had a realization of the scale of Valens ambition. He wasn't trying to carve out a territory. He was systematically dismantling the empires infrastructure. He was using their tools to expand his domain across the continent.

You are going to take the citadel Zarek whispered.

I am going to take everything they built with our waste Valen corrected him.

They reached the tactical room. Noa was standing by the slit window. Her gaze was fixed on the sky. The golden light from the encampment had grown closer. The three mobile siphons were now visible. They looked like radiant needles that cut through the purple clouds three miles away. The outer boundary of the Throne was vibrating. The pale silver shield was absorbing the holy energy. It was converting it into structural density.

They have reached the ravines Noa said. Kael has separated from the infantry. He is moving down the gulch alone. His Sun-Forged Bulwark is raised. He is clearing the miasma with every step. He will be at our perimeter in twenty minutes.

Zarek Valen ordered. Take the beastmen to their positions on the cliffs. Garrok will hold the valley floor with the broadswords. Do not engage until Kael enters the three-mile radius of our domain. The moment he steps through the silver shield his connection to the network will be severed by our administrative core. That is when you strike.

Understood, Sovereign! Zarek said. He bowed before sprinting down the corridor.

Valen walked over to Noa. He stood beside her as the distant figure of the Grand Inquisitor emerged from the violet fog. From three miles away Kael looked like a star that had fallen to the earth. His silver armor radiated a white-hot plasma. It left a trail of smoking, stone in his wake. He moved with a unhurried precision. His massive Aetherite shield was held before him like a segment of a wall.

Are you afraid of him Noa? Valen asked.

No Noa whispered. I am not afraid.. The voices... They are screaming very loudly now. They are telling him to delete everything. They are telling him that the defect must be corrected.

The system doesn't tolerate errors Valen said. I am not an error, Noa. I am the operator.

He turned away from the window. He walked out of the keep and into the courtyard. Garrok and his twenty warriors were waiting. The beastmen stood in a silent formation. Their translucent green broadswords were held close to their chests. The high-frequency vibrations of the blades created a collective hiss.

They looked up at Valen as he stepped onto the stone dais. There were no words spoken. The time for speeches had passed. The outcasts knew what was at stake. If they failed they would return to the cages of the mana camps. If they won they would own the wasteland that had been their graveyard.

Valen raised his hand. He connected his consciousness to the gates mechanism.

Open the gates he commanded.

The heavy iron-reinforced granite doors of the fortress groaned as they swung outward. They revealed the grey valley that stretched toward the narrow obsidian canyon. The silver dome above them shimmered. Its pale light cast shadows across the ash-covered earth.

Two miles away the brilliant hot star of the Grand Inquisitor reached the outer edge of the boundary. He did not pause. He did not hesitate. He raised his shield. His level thirty aura flared with a blinding intensity as he stepped directly through the perimeter of the Sovereigns Domain.

System notification: External network connection severed for target entity: Kael (Level 30).

Localized rules engaged.

The battle, for the basin has initiated.

Valen stepped down from the dais. His black vanguard garb drew the light toward him as he walked out into the valley floor to meet the chosen blade of the empire. Every step he took was calculated. Every parameter was analyzed. His mind operated at a frequency that transcended the limits of the world. The countdown had ended. The interface was bronze. The operator was ready to delete the divinity of the core.

    The bronze glow of the Aetherite core filled the laboratory with a pulsing light that matched Valens breathing. The Class Core of the Holy Avenger of the First Order was an item, shaped like a twenty-sided crystal.
