Chapter 11: The Reckoning
Ray rubbed his reddening cheek, his eyes burning with fury and something darker. "You know I love you, Amelia. But I'm not letting this slide tonight." He grabbed her wrist."Let go of me!" She struggled, but his grip was iron. "You're coming with me. We'll have our date, and tonight in my room, you will pay heavily for that slap."Trevor lunged forward. "Get your hands off her!" Brad, Jason, and Adam blocked him instantly. "Where do you think you're going, Stevens?" Brad said. "Move!" Trevor yelled. "Not a chance."Amelia's eyes darted around for help. The students stood frozen, none would dare move against Ray Steflon. Then came the sound, it was a deep, heavy revving, louder and meaner than Ray's car. Every head turned toward the driveway. Another Pagani Huayra approached, but this one made Ray's fifty-million-dollar car look ordinary."That's the limited edition. The one-of-one hundred-million-dollar version." "Twice the price of Ray's car." "Costs more than all the Golden Five's
Chapter 12: The Truth Waits for No One
The grand ballroom of Silvercrest University was like a fancy church. It had expensive lights hanging from the ceiling that looked like ice. The tables were covered with cloth and had pretty flowers and special cards with names on them. The room was filled with people from the city like the people who give the university money the leaders of the university and the teachers. They were all drinking champagne. Talking to each other but they did not know that something big had just happened in the parking lot.Ethan walked into the room with Amelia by his side and Trevor was walking behind them. People turned to look at them. It was not because they knew Ethan it was because of the way he walked into the room. It was the confidence, the tailored suit and the woman beside him, who had been expected on the arm of Ray Steflon.VC Hector Freeman stood near the head table, deep in conversation with two board members. When he saw his daughter enter with Ethan, his expression soured instantly.
Chapter 13: The Kneeling of Giants
The ballroom doors swung open, and the world changed.Donald Steflon walked in like a man who owned the ground beneath his feet. Behind him marched a procession of Silvercrest personnel, men and women in dark uniforms bearing the mountain-and-crown crest, their expressions carved from stone. The string quartet died mid-note. Conversations evaporated and every donor, every board member, every student rose from their seats as instinct took over.Even those who had never seen Donald Steflon in person knew the crest. Knew what it meant when the second most powerful man in the world walked into a room unannounced.VC Hector scrambled forward, his earlier fury replaced by panicked deference. "Mr. Steflon! What an honor, we weren't informed you'd be attending. If we had known, we would have prepared a proper welcome..."Donald walked past him as if he didn't exist. He stopped in front of Ethan. The room held its breath and then, in front of the assembled elite of Silvercrest University, dono
Chapter 14: The Weight of Mercy
VC Hector was still on his knees. Behind his desperate eyes he was still angry. He did not believe what was happening. Ethan, the kid who cleaned the toilets was not really a Silvercrests. This did not make sense to Hector. He firmly believed the rich people were always rich and the poor people were always poor.Hector thought to himself "He is tricking them." He was thinking fast even though his body was shaking. "He somehow fooled Donald Steflon. This is a scam, If I pretend to be sorry now and act really humble I can get out of this and bid my time. When the truth comes out, when they find out Ethan is not who he says he is. I will their to see him crumble."He put his forehead on the floor. "Young Master Silvercrest " he said, trying to sound sorry. "I am sorry, i was wrong and rude. I did things to you that are unforgivable. I was afraid of the Golden Five so I did not do what was right."The people who gave money to the school were watching and they were very surprised. The peop
Chapter 15: The Dance of Wolves
Celia remained in the service corridor, her mind churning through the wreckage of every choice she'd made. Brad's sobs faded into white noise. She barely felt his hand clutching hers. All she could see was Ethan. The way he'd walked into the ballroom with Amelia on his arm, the way Donald Steflon had knelt before him, the way every person in that room had looked at him like he was a god descending from the heavens. He had loved her. He had given her eight months of devotion, of sacrifice, of believing she was worth more than all the wealth she craved. And she had thrown him away for a man who was now weeping on the floor like a child."I can fix this," she told herself. "Ethan is forgiving. He forgave VC Hector, he'll forgive me. He still loves me, he said so himself."She pulled her hand from Brad's grasp and stood."Celia? Where are you going?" Brad's voice was a broken rasp. She did not answer. She smoothed out her dress wiped away her tears and walked back into the ballroom. The D
Chapter 16: The Road to Destiny
The morning sun was shining over the city as Ethan stood outside his apartment for the last time. He had a bag with him. It had some clothes, a book and a picture of the place where he grew up. The apartment looked small now. It did not look like a place to live. It looked like a prison.A big car pulled up. It was a special car. It was long and black with decorations that sparkled in the sun. The Silvercrest family sign was on the doors. When the driver opened the door Ethan saw the inside of the car. It was very fancy. There were decorations and soft leather seats. There was a special light on the ceiling.Donald Steflon got out of the car. He bowed to Ethan. "Are you ready to go?" he asked.Ethan looked at his apartment one time. Then he nodded. "I am ready " he said.Ethan got into the car. Donald sat across from him and the driver closed the door. The car started moving. Ethan looked out the window. Watched his old neighborhood get smaller and smaller. The city gave way to the co
Chapter 17: The First Lesson
One week had passed since the Donor Banquet. One week since Ethan had entered the Silvercrest Manor as a lost heir and begun the impossible task of becoming one.The days blurred into a relentless cycle of education. Donald had arranged tutors in finance, etiquette, politics, and history, the history of the Silvercrest family itself, which stretched back centuries and contained more wars, betrayals, and alliances than most nations. Ethan studied until his eyes burned and his head throbbed. He learned the names of subsidiary families, the structure of the global empire, the protocols for addressing elders and allies and enemies. He had barely slept. He had barely eaten. But he had not complained once. This morning, Donald had insisted on a change of pace. "Theory is essential, Young Master, but application is equally important. Today you will visit one of the family's subsidiaries. A pharmaceutical company. You will observe how the Silvercrest empire operates in practice."Which was ho
Chapter 18: The Crucible
The second gunshot was deafening.Sable Cross was already in motion before the echo faded. She grabbed Ethan by the collar and hurled him behind a marble pillar, her body a shield between him and the unseen shooter. "Stay down!" she barked. "Do not move until I tell you!"Donald was shouting orders into his earpiece, his usual composure cracked but not broken. "Lock down the building! All exits! I want the shooter found, now!"The lobby had dissolved into chaos. Employees crawled behind desks. Executives flattened themselves against the floor. Reginald Crane, forgotten in the mayhem, curled into a fetal position near the reception desk, still weeping.Sable's eyes swept the upper balcony. She caught a flicker of movement, a shadow shifting behind a glass partition. "Second floor, east wing," she muttered into her comms. "Single shooter, possibly with backup. I'm moving the young master to the vehicle, cover me."She hauled Ethan to his feet. "We're leaving. Now."They ran, Sable's gri
CHAPTER 19: Flour Fever
The convoy of sleek black cars came to a halt outside the modest bakery on 46th Gresham Street. Ethan emerged, his gaze sweeping the surroundings with careful focus. He signaled to his soldiers to disperse and protect the perimeter. Trevor's urgent tone compelled him to bring a strong display of power."Be vigilant," Ethan commanded while opening the bakery door, causing the bell to softly jingle above. The employees indoors stood still, their eyes wide in disbelief at the unexpected, intimidating entry."Trevor! Amelia!" Ethan called out, his voice echoing through the small shop. He spotted them at the back, standing next to a display case filled with pastries. Relief washed over him as he rushed to their side, his heart still pounding."Are you alright?" he asked, his voice laced with concern as he reached out to Trevor and Amelia, checking them over for any sign of harm.Trevor smiled, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "We're fine, Ethan. We just needed to get you here."Ethan's br
Chapter 20: Sir Ethan
The owner, a middle-aged woman with flour-dusted cheeks, approached Ethan and Amelia with a grateful smile."Miss Freeman, your presence at our small bakery is truly appreciated," she expressed sincerely. Her husband, a portly man with a friendly expression, gave a nod of agreement. "Having you here is a privilege. Can we offer you anything else?"Amelia shook her head, smiling. "You've already given us so much by allowing us to use your bakery. Thank you."The husband glanced towards the back room. "I need to get more flour. I'll be right back."Ethan stepped forward. "I'll go with you."The man looked startled. "Sir, there's no need for you to do such... manual labor."Ethan waved off the objection. "Nonsense.” He said as he looked back at Amelia and then at the man. “Today I’m a baker so lead the way."The owner’s wife on the other hand was on her phone as she was texting frantically, her face full of worries.Amelia's expression shifted, showing a hint of concern. "Hey, Mrs. Phili
