Chapter 11: The Reckoning
last update2026-06-15 21:04:03

Ray rubbed his reddening cheek, his eyes burning with fury and something darker. "You know I love you, Amelia. But I'm not letting this slide tonight." He grabbed her wrist.

"Let go of me!" She struggled, but his grip was iron. "You're coming with me. We'll have our date, and tonight in my room, you will pay heavily for that slap."

Trevor lunged forward. "Get your hands off her!" Brad, Jason, and Adam blocked him instantly. "Where do you think you're going, Stevens?" Brad said. "Move!" Trevor yelled. "Not a chance."

Amelia's eyes darted around for help. The students stood frozen, none would dare move against Ray Steflon.

Then came the sound, it was a deep, heavy revving, louder and meaner than Ray's car. Every head turned toward the driveway. Another Pagani Huayra approached, but this one made Ray's fifty-million-dollar car look ordinary.

"That's the limited edition. The one-of-one hundred-million-dollar version." "Twice the price of Ray's car." "Costs more than all the Golden Five's cars combined."

Even Ray stopped and his grip loosened. "Who the hell  owns that car? Who could be richer than me?" He thought to himself.

The Pagani pulled in, turned smoothly, and stopped with its rear facing the Golden Five. The quad exhaust pipes stared at them like weapon barrels. The engine roared and flames shot from the exhaust, smoke and fumes blasting the Golden Five directly. Adam stumbled backward and Jessica screamed. Jason covered his face, Cady's hair blew wild and Brad coughed, pulling Celia behind him.

"Who the hell is that?" Adam shouted.

"Someone who doesn't care about Ray or the Golden Five," Trevor muttered.

Ray released Amelia completely. Who would dare disrespect him so openly?

The engine cut and silence fell as the door opened and Ethan stepped out. "Ethan?" someone breathed. "No way. That's Ethan the janitor. The broom boy."

Jaws dropped an eyes bulged. The Golden Five were paralyzed and Adam's mouth hung open, Jessica went pale, Jason looked ghost-struck, Cady dropped her phone. Brad blinked twice. Celia thought she was dreaming. The man stepping out of that hundred-million-dollar car could not be the same man she'd cheated on yesterday, had thrown out of Mayfair Gardens, had watched get slapped by Ray this morning. It wasn't possible.

Trevor's smile was frozen, eyes wide. "Is that really Ethan?"

Amelia didn't hesitate. She pulled away from Ray and ran toward Ethan, heels clicking, gown flowing. She didn't care what anyone thought.

Ethan straightened his suit as she reached him. His confident smile was that of a man who had already won a battle nobody else knew had been fought. "You came," she said, breathless. "You actually came."

"I told you I would." Ethan said with a calm smile.

Amelia still trembling said, "Ray was about to force me inside. He was going to..."

Ethan's smile didn't waver, but something cold flickered in his eyes. "Don't worry about Ray. I'm your date tonight and there is nothing he can do about it."

"How can you be so sure?" Amelia asked.

Ethan smiled once more, "Trust me."

Before she could ask more, the Golden Five found their voices. Adam marched forward, with his face red. "What is this garbage? What are you doing here?" Jessica pointed at smoke stains on her dress. "You ruined our outfits! Do you know how much this cost?" Cady demanded, "Is that a cheap fake car? A replica?" Brad crossed his arms. "You must have rented it or stolen it."

Ethan laughed, genuine and warm. "You think my car is cheap and fake? Pagani Huayra limited edition, one of one, worth one hundred and ten million dollars, you can go ahead and verify it."

"He's lying," Adam said, but his voice lacked certainty. "Mimicking Ray to look important," Jessica added. "Pathetic."

But a student in the crowd had already pulled out his phone. "I just checked the registration. It's real. That car is registered under Ethan's name and is for sure worth one hundred and ten million dollars."

Whispers spread like fire. "It's real? Ethan owns a hundred-million-dollar car? How?"

Trevor stepped closer, searching Ethan's face. "Man, what's going on? You were broke yesterday. Did you win the lottery?"

Before Ethan could answer, another student shouted, "Wait! The Mega Ball lottery, the one-billion-dollar jackpot! The winner was announced last night and stayed anonymous. It must be him!"

Gasps turned to cheers. Students who had mocked Ethan minutes ago now applauded. Some who had laughed while Jessica poured champagne on his head yesterday now clapped like they'd always been his friends. "Ethan won the lottery! A billion dollars! No wonder he has that car!"

Brad scoffed, though even he looked shaken. "Lottery money doesn't last. Most winners go broke within five years." Jason nodded aggressively. "After taxes, he's got less than five hundred million. That's nothing compared to us. We're still richer." Cady added, "Pocket change to our families." Celia laughed, but it came out forced. "So that's what you were doing at Spirit Bank redeeming your little lottery ticket, how cute."

Ethan smiled and said nothing. If only they knew, the money in his pocket was three hundred billion, and that was nothing compared to the Silvercrest name. But for now, he preferred it that way.

Amelia stepped forward, voice sharp. "At least Ethan is rich now and you can't bully him anymore."

Ray had been watching silently, studying Ethan, now he'd heard enough. Just a lottery winner, a lucky peasant with money but no real power. "You," Ray cut through the crowd. "This morning at Spirit Bank, I told Austin Ross and Golden Samson to deal with you. But here you are, walking free. Did you escape them?"

Ethan met his stare. "They couldn't punish me."

Ray's jaw tightened. "Fine. I'll make sure both lose their jobs by morning. But tonight, I have a date to attend. I will spare you tonight, lottery boy. Tomorrow, you will regret your entire existence." He reached for Amelia's hand.

Ethan laughed. It stopped Ray dead. "What's funny?"

"You should check your phone, Ray. Your father has been calling."

The crowd murmured as Ray frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Check your phone." Ethan insisted.

Ray pulled out his phone. His face went white. Twenty-three missed calls and all from his father. Donald Steflon never called more than once. Twice meant urgent and three times meant emergency, twenty-three meant catastrophe. His hands began to shake.

"Excuse me," Ray muttered, stepping away. He pressed redial. Even from a distance, everyone could hear the shouting. "Idiot! I've been calling for hours!" Donald's voice thundered. "Sorry, Father, I was busy..." "Shut up, you foolish child! You know nothing but undeserved privileges, and now you're about to bring the family to ruin!" Ray flinched, nodding rapidly, face going from white to gray.

"What's happening?" Jessica whispered. "His father sounds furious," Cady said. "What did Ethan do?" Adam asked. Nobody had an answer.

Adam and Jessica stepped up to Ethan. "Lottery boy, you need to pay for our dresses that your stunt ruined. Or we'll destroy your probably rented car." Other affected students murmured support. The Golden Five rallied behind them.

Ethan laughed. "Didn't I promise to bankrupt your families within twenty-four hours?"

Adam ordered the students, "Pick up stones. Let's wreck this poser's car."

Amelia and Trevor begged, "Everyone, please wait! We'll pay for your dresses. Just don't damage the car."

But Ethan only smiled. "You don't have to beg anyone. Why don't we all wait for Ray before doing things we might regret? After all, you don't seem to know who you're messing with."

Adam gave the order to begin. But before anyone could land a stone, Ray came running back, yelling, "Stop!" Everyone froze, hands in the air. Ray walked back into the scene like rain-soaked wool. He was calm and humbled.

He walked directly to Ethan and bowed. "I apologize," Ray said, voice barely above a whisper. "For slapping you this morning, for insulting you, for everything. I was wrong."

Everyone's jaws dropped in unison. "Did Ray Steflon just bow? To Ethan? To the broom boy?"

Ethan reached out and tapped Ray on the head twice, like praising a trained dog. "Good boy. Good, good boy."

Shockwaves rippled as students grabbed each other's arms, covered their mouths, stared, unable to process. Ray Steflon, son of the second most powerful man in the world, being patted on the head by the janitor.

"I won't come near Amelia tonight," Ray continued, still bowed. "I won't speak to her and I won't look at her. I swear it."

"Good." Ethan withdrew his hand. "You can go now."

Ray straightened but kept his head lowered. He turned and walked toward his car. The crowd parted like the Red Sea. And Adam rushed after him. "Ray, wait! What the hell is happening?" Jessica followed. "Your father, what did he say?"

Ray spun around, face twisted with fury. "Your families! Both of your families are bankrupt as of this very moment!"

The words hit like a bomb. Adam stumbled backward. "What? No. That's not possible. We would have heard..."

"Check your phone, you fool!" Ray said.

Jessica was already dialing, hands shaking so badly she could barely hold the phone. She listened for ten seconds, then the device slipped from her fingers and clattered to the ground. Her face went blank. Her eyes rolled back and she fainted. Cady caught her before she hit the pavement.

Adam was on his phone now and his face crumpled up. When he lowered the phone, tears streamed down his cheeks. "Our accounts is frozen. My father is on the phone with the bank right now. It's all gone, everything is gone." He dropped to his knees.

Ethan had promised to bankrupt Adam and Jessica's families before midnight. That was almost twenty-four hours ago. Everyone had laughed, but here it was.

Ethan turned away from the chaos. He reached out and took Amelia's hand, then nodded at Trevor. "Shall we go inside?"

The three walked toward the grand entrance. Behind them, Adam was still on his knees, crying. Jessica was being fanned awake by Cady. Brad and Jason stood motionless, faces pale. Celia watched Ethan walk away with Amelia, something in her expression cracking. Ray's car was already screeching out of the lot, heading home to demand answers from his father.

Amelia looked down at his hand holding hers, then up at his face. The calm smile, the quiet confidence, it was like looking at a stranger wearing her friend's face. "Who are you?" she whispered.

Trevor stepped forward. "Ethan, what's going on? The car, the suit, Ray bowing to you, Adam and Jessica's families going bankrupt, you promised all of this and it actually happened. How?"

Ethan looked at his two friends, the only people who had ever stood by him, never mocked him, never treated him as less than human. He said confidently, "See, you guys wouldn't believe me if I told you."
