Chapter 13: The Kneeling of Giants
last update2026-07-03 11:35:06

The ballroom doors swung open, and the world changed.

Donald Steflon walked in like a man who owned the ground beneath his feet. Behind him marched a procession of Silvercrest personnel, men and women in dark uniforms bearing the mountain-and-crown crest, their expressions carved from stone. The string quartet died mid-note. Conversations evaporated and every donor, every board member, every student rose from their seats as instinct took over.

Even those who had never seen Donald Steflon in person knew the crest. Knew what it meant when the second most powerful man in the world walked into a room unannounced.

VC Hector scrambled forward, his earlier fury replaced by panicked deference. "Mr. Steflon! What an honor, we weren't informed you'd be attending. If we had known, we would have prepared a proper welcome..."

Donald walked past him as if he didn't exist.

He stopped in front of Ethan. The room held its breath and then, in front of the assembled elite of Silvercrest University, donors worth billions, board members with political connections spanning continents, students from the wealthiest families in the world, Donald Steflon dropped to one knee and bowed his head.

"Young Master Silvercrest," he said, his voice ringing through the silent ballroom. "I have arrived, as you commanded."

The words hit like thunder. Gasps ripped through the crowd. Board members gripped their chairs for support. A donor dropped her champagne glass, the shatter echoing in the stunned silence.

"Young Master... Silvercrest?" someone whispered, the words barely audible.

Amelia's hand flew to her mouth. Trevor's jaw dropped, his eyes wide as saucers. They had known something was different about Ethan tonight, but this? This was beyond anything they could have imagined.

Ethan looked down at Donald, his expression calm but commanding. "Rise, Donald. You may speak freely."

Donald rose smoothly. He turned to face the crowd, his presence filling the room. "It is my duty to inform everyone present that Ethan is the lost heir of the Silvercrest family. He is the son of the Silvercrest patriarch himself, and therefore the young master of the most powerful family on earth. Any disrespect shown to him is an offense against the Silvercrest Clan itself."

Brad Charlesly stumbled forward, his face white as ash. "No. No, that's impossible. I called Martin Ashford and he confirmed there is no lost heir. The Charlesly family works directly under the Silvercrest Clan, we would have known!"

Donald's gaze shifted to Brad, and it was like watching a glacier turn its attention to a pebble. "Martin Ashford is a mid-level administrative clerk," Donald said coldly. "He handles scheduling and catering for subsidiary events. He knows nothing of the Silvercrest bloodline. The fact that you thought he could verify the existence of the patriarch's own son speaks to your family's profound ignorance of the hierarchy they claim to serve."

Brad's mouth opened and closed, no sound emerging.

"But since you raised the subject of the Charlesly family," Donald continued, his voice hardening, "let me address it directly. The Charlesly family's subordinate contract with the Silvercrest Clan is now under immediate review for the mistreatment of the heir. Effective immediately, all Charlesly assets are frozen. Your family will face complete financial quarantine until a full investigation is concluded."

The room erupted. Donors shouted questions. Board members clutched each other. Brad's face went from white to gray to something almost translucent.

"You can't do this," Brad whispered. "My family just crossed a hundred billion. We're centibillionaires. We're under the Silvercrest umbrella, untouchable!"

"The umbrella you speak of," Donald said, "was provided by the Silvercrest family. And the Silvercrest family can fold it whenever they choose."

Brad's hands shook violently as he fumbled for his phone. "I'm calling my father. He'll sort this out. He'll contact the Silvercrest main office. There's been a mistake, a huge mistake." He was already backing away, phone pressed to his ear, voice cracking as he shouted into it. "Dad? Dad, you need to..." He stumbled through a side door and disappeared from the ballroom.

Jason and Cady stood frozen, their faces masks of terror. Celia had pressed herself against the wall, her eyes fixed on Ethan with an expression that defied description, horror, disbelief, and the dawning realization of just how catastrophically she had miscalculated.

Donald wasn't finished. He turned to VC Hector, and something dangerous flickered in his eyes.

"Vice Chancellor Freeman," Donald said, his voice dropping to something almost conversational. "I've been informed of how you've treated the young master during his time at this institution. The false accusations, the expulsion without evidence, the public humiliation, the threats against your own daughter for defending him."

VC Hector's face drained of color. "Mr. Steflon, I—I had no idea who he was. If I had known..."

"If you had known?" Donald repeated, his voice rising. "So your justice is conditional? You only treat people with basic decency when you know they're powerful? When they're poor, when they're vulnerable, you throw them to the wolves without a second thought?"

"Mr. Steflon, please, I can explain..."

'SMACK!!!' Donald slapped him.

The sound cracked through the ballroom like a gunshot. VC Hector staggered backward, hand flying to his cheek. Amelia gasped but didn't move.

"You expelled the heir of the Silvercrest family based on the lies of spoiled children," Donald said, his voice cold as winter steel. "You allowed him to be arrested. You allowed him to be humiliated in front of the entire student body. You threatened to disown your own daughter for having the integrity to stand by him. You, Vice Chancellor, are a disgrace to this institution and to the title you carry."

Hector's composure crumbled. "Please, Mr. Steflon. I've served this university for twenty years. I've dedicated my life..."

"Your service ends tonight. You are fired, effective immediately."

The words landed like a guillotine. Hector stumbled forward, his dignity forgotten. He dropped to his knees in front of Donald, hands clasped, voice desperate. "Please! Please, Mr. Steflon, I'm begging you. This university is my life. I'll do anything, I'll apologize publicly, I'll make amends. Just please, don't take this from me."

Donald looked down at the kneeling man with something between pity and contempt. "You're begging the wrong person, Vice Chancellor. It is not me you crossed. It is the young master of the Silvercrest family."

Hectors head turned slowly as his eyes moving up to meet Ethans eyes.

The room became really quiet. It was so quiet that the sound of the chandeliers seemed loud. Every person who donated money every board member and every student was watching. They were all looking at VC Hector Freeman, a man worth forty billion dollars and twenty years of power with connections in three continents. He was on his knees on the marble floor. His whole future was in the hands of the janitor he had tried to hurt.

Ethan looked down at Hector. His face did not show any emotions and he did not say a word. He just waited.

As Ethan waited Hector realized what a big mistake he had made. He had taken the side of the Golden Five against a student who could not defend himself. He had thrown out a man just to keep his own power. He had even threatened to stop being a father to his daughter because she did what he was too afraid to do.

Now Hector had to beg the person he thought was not good enough to be around him.

The silence kept going. Amelia looked at her father, who was on his knees and then at Ethan. She had a lot of emotions on her face. She felt sorry for her father, but she was also angry at him for what he did. But more so impactfully she was amazed at how Ethan had changed.

Donald took a step back to let Ethan make the decision. Whatever happened next was up, to him.

Ethan still did not say anything. He let the moment go on. He let Hector feel the weight of what he had done as he could see Hector was almost shaking.

Finally Ethan moved his head a little. He said "Do you have something to say to me Mr. Freeman?"

The whole room was waiting to see what would happen.
