Chapter 41
As soon as Vanessa arrived, she noticed Adrian was curled on the ground, his face swollen and bloodied, while Darren stood several steps away with his fists clenched. "Darren, stop!" Vanessa's scream cut through the chaos. She rushed forward and immediately positioned herself between Darren and Adrian. "Why did you do this?" she demanded, staring at Darren with disbelief. "Why did you shove Adrian into the road and try to get him killed?" Darren froze. For a moment, he simply stared at her. He had expected Vanessa to worry about Adrian and to misunderstand the situation. But hearing those words directly from his wife still felt like a knife driven into his chest. Why did you shove Adrian? Why did you try to kill him? Darren slowly lowered his fist. His body was already at its limit. The energy inside him had become increasingly unstable after he had forced it into action to stop the tanker. His internal injuries were worsening by the second. Every breath caused pain to sprea
Chapter 42
The ambulance arrived only minutes later. Its siren pierced through the chaos as it stopped beside the damaged tanker. Several paramedics immediately jumped out, carrying medical equipment and stretchers. Vanessa rushed toward them. "Please, treat him first!" she said urgently, pointing toward Adrian. Adrian was still sitting on the ground, clutching his injured leg and groaning. "His leg is numb, and he was almost hit by the tanker. Please take care of him!" One of the paramedics nodded and immediately moved toward Adrian. Darren remained several meters away. He was barely standing. His complexion was frighteningly pale, and sweat covered his forehead. Blood stained his lips and the front of his clothes. His breathing was shallow as he struggled to suppress the pain tearing through his body. But Vanessa didn't notice. Her attention remained entirely on Adrian. As the paramedics examined Adrian, one of them asked, "Are there any other injured people?" Vanessa shook her hea

Before consciousness finally slipped away, Darren forced his heavy eyelids open one last time. The woman's face, which had remained blurred through the haze, gradually became clear. His breathing stopped for a moment. "Chloe...?" It was really her. Chloe Jade. His mother's adopted daughter. One of Darren's current personal guards. And one of the most capable people working directly under his command. Chloe wasn't merely a personal guard. Over the years, Darren had entrusted her with enormous responsibilities. She currently managed two major arms and pharmaceutical conglomerates operating under his name, handling their affairs while remaining almost completely invisible to the outside world. Yet hadn't he assigned her to a long-term mission far away? Why was she here? Darren's mind was already becoming sluggish. Then another memory surfaced. The flowers. The flowers he had found yesterday at his mother's grave. At the time, he had wondered who could have placed them there.
Chapter 44
Chloe had not originally planned to return so soon. She had been assigned to a long-term mission far from Kelpton City, and under normal circumstances, she would have remained there until she had completed every aspect of her investigation. However, after discovering the unusual military movements and gathering the preliminary evidence, she had made a decision of her own. She wanted to report everything to Darren personally. There were some matters she did not trust to encrypted messages or subordinate reports. The military buildup was too unusual, too deliberate, and too potentially dangerous. She wanted to look Darren in the eyes while explaining everything she had discovered. What she never expected was to arrive in Kelpton City at precisely the moment when Darren would nearly lose consciousness after saving innocent people. The sight had shaken her to her core. Even now, sitting behind the steering wheel while Darren rested in the passenger seat, Chloe couldn't completely e

"Three of Adrian's ribs were broken," Vanessa continued angrily. "Three, Darren! The doctors also found that multiple internal organs were bleeding, and one of his legs was fractured. He had to undergo major surgery." Darren remained silent. Chloe, sitting behind the wheel, glanced at him through the corner of her eye. She could hear Vanessa's voice faintly through the phone, but she couldn't make out every word. Darren's expression, however, told her enough. "He was in extremely serious condition," Vanessa continued. "The doctors said that if the ambulance hadn't arrived in time, he might have died." Darren's lips curled slightly. He remembered exactly what had happened, how Adrian deliberately provoked him, and how he tried to shove him toward the road. And, most importantly, he remembered that Adrian had been standing beside him when he made that phone call to Vanessa and deliberately twisted the entire situation. Yet Vanessa was now speaking as though Darren had simply attac
Chapter 46
In the end, all those emotions inside Chloe turned into a single sigh. She was dissatisfied with Vanessa's behavior and furious at Adrian for manipulating the situation. Yet looking at Darren's exhausted face, Chloe knew that adding fuel to the fire would accomplish nothing. Darren had just severed his final means of communication with Vanessa. He had crushed his phone in his hand and made it clear that he no longer wanted to hear her voice. The last thing he needed was someone beside him repeatedly reminding him of everything that had gone wrong. Chloe quietly sighed. "Darren," she said gently, "don't think about it anymore." Darren opened his eyes. "It's difficult not to." "I know." Chloe's voice softened. "But you've done what you could. You tried to explain yourself. You tried to save the marriage. You even endured things most people wouldn't have tolerated." "Whatever happens now, don't blame yourself for someone else's choices." Darren looked at her for a moment befo
Chapter 47
Vanessa remained completely unaware of Adrian's pretence. She continued visiting him at the hospital, making sure he had everything he needed and personally checking with the doctors about his recovery. Whenever Adrian complained about pain, Vanessa immediately became concerned. Whenever he tried to sit up too quickly, she would stop him. Whenever he apologized for causing trouble between her and Darren, she would reassure him that he shouldn't blame himself. Adrian played his part perfectly. He remained weak and vulnerable whenever Vanessa was around, speaking slowly and occasionally wincing as though even breathing caused him pain. Vanessa never suspected that his condition was not nearly as severe as he made it appear. In her mind, Adrian was simply a badly injured employee who had narrowly escaped death. And because she believed Darren had been responsible for his injuries, her sympathy toward Adrian only grew stronger. Meanwhile, Darren remained absent. His phone had be
Chapter 48
Vanessa convinced herself that there was no way Darren would truly leave her. No matter how angry he had become, no matter how coldly he had spoken, she simply couldn't believe that the man who had spent three years loving her would actually walk away from their marriage. He was hurt, jealous, and furious. But surely those emotions would eventually pass. And once they did, Darren would realize that he had made a terrible mistake. This time, however, Vanessa refused to back down. She was determined to make Darren understand just how serious his own mistakes had been. He had accused her repeatedly, treated Adrian with hostility, attacked him, and then refused to show any remorse even after Adrian had undergone major surgery. Vanessa believed Darren needed to understand that marriage could not survive if one partner constantly allowed jealousy and possessiveness to control him. "No matter what happens," she murmured, "I'm not going to apologize first." She reached for her phone. H
Chapter 49
Adrian remained seated on the sofa while Vanessa continued staring at the military correspondence on her computer. The silence between them was uncomfortable. The email had reminded Vanessa of how much Darren had quietly handled over the past three years, and even though she continued insisting that he would eventually return, his absence was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. Adrian noticed the change in her expression. After hesitating for a moment, he cautiously asked, "Vanessa..." She looked up. "Yes?" "Is Darren's departure somehow because of me?" Vanessa's eyebrows immediately drew together. "What?" Adrian lowered his eyes. "I've been thinking about everything that happened. Maybe if I hadn't become involved in your disagreements, things wouldn't have reached this point." He sighed softly. "If he's angry because of me, perhaps I should help you find him." Vanessa immediately interrupted him. "No." Adrian looked at her. "This has nothing to do with you." "
Chapter 50
Adrian’s attitude appeared highly proactive, and for several seconds, Vanessa simply stared at him. She had expected Adrian to complain about Darren’s disappearance or perhaps ask her to intervene. She had not expected him to volunteer for such an important responsibility. Quality inspection was not an ordinary administrative task. The upcoming military weapons acceptance conference was extremely important to the company. Any mistake in the inspection reports, technical specifications, testing records, or acceptance procedures could create serious problems during the military evaluation. Vanessa slowly leaned back in her chair. “Are you sure about this?” Adrian nodded immediately. “Yes.” Vanessa remained hesitant. Although she was the head of the company, she knew her own limitations. She was primarily a businesswoman. She understood contracts, negotiations, investments, clients, military partnerships, and corporate strategy. But the technical side of weapons producti
