As soon as Vanessa arrived, she noticed Adrian was curled on the ground, his face swollen and bloodied, while Darren stood several steps away with his fists clenched.

"Darren, stop!"

Vanessa's scream cut through the chaos.

She rushed forward and immediately positioned herself between Darren and Adrian.

"Why did you do this?" she demanded, staring at Darren with disbelief. "Why did you shove Adrian into the road and try to get him killed?"

Darren froze. For a moment, he simply stared at her.

Vanessa's expression was clouded with worry. She wondered how she could see Darren. For the first time in a long while, she found herself thinking about her estranged husband with an intensity she could hardly ignore. The military project had collapsed. The original weapon parameters were permanently lost, and the company had been left facing the consequences of Adrian's decisions. Worse still, the incident had exposed just how much Vanessa had failed to understand about the department she was supposed to oversee. She remembered the Chief Engineer's explanation about the protected data and the email he had previously sent her. She had received the warning but had barely given it the attention it deserved. If she had listened more carefully, perhaps things would not have reached this point. And now, there was only one person she could think of who might have been able to prevent such a disaster.Darren! He had personally developed the original weapon parameters. However, as she continued reading the attached documents, her confusion gradually gave way to growing apprehension. The notice contained details of the investigation conducted after the incident.According to the information provided, the driver had reported the matter to the police shortly after the accident. Vanessa stared at her phone, unable to shake the disturbing realization that had just settled over her.Darren had canceled his number. It was no longer a matter of him refusing to answer her calls or deliberately ignoring her messages. The number she had used to reach him for the past three years no longer existed. He had seemingly severed one of the last connections between them, leaving her with no immediate way of finding out where he was or what he intended to do next. That meant he truly intended to cut off all contact with her completely. The thought sent an uncomfortable shiver through her.She tried to convince herself that she was overthinking the situation. Perhaps Darren had simply changed his number and needed some time away from everyone and would eventually contact her when he was ready. But the memories she had just recalled made those explanations increasingly difficult to accept.Darren might have been preparing to leave her for good.Vanessa swallowed painfully an
