31. CASSIAN GOAL
.Fritz led Cassian and Griess away from the roaring arena and into a dimly lit, soundproofed back office. The club owner collapsed into his leather chair, looking like a man who had just aged ten years in ten minutes. He looked across his cluttered desk at the imperial prince. "What do you want to know about the Devil?" Fritz asked, his voice rough. "I want to know where he is," Cassian replied, completely unbothered. Fritz let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "You must be insane to be looking for him. He is the Devil. You don't chase the Devil unless you have a death wish." "Do you know where he is or not?" Cassian asked, his tone dripping with boredom. "Nobody knows where the Devil is. Not even the Night-Suns," Fritz argued, slamming a hand on his desk. "His location is restricted to a very, very small inner circle." "So this was a waste of time," Griess cut in, his eyes narrowing behind his glasses. He stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "If you didn't know, you should have
32. Entering the wilderness
It had been two days since Lucian left the Starlight Castle. After dropping Garrett off at a secure inn within the streets of Trench Town, Lucian and Isabel pushed forward. They rode the carriage to the end of Trench Town, till they met a massive, overgrown tree line. They had finally arrived at the entrance to the Dead Valley. In front of them was a forest. The trees were very tall, their branches twisting together to block out the sunlight, creating a permanent twilight beneath the canopy. Lucian grabbed his backpack and hopped down from the carriage, his boots crunching against the dry dead leaves. Isabel stepped down right behind him, securing the straps of her own pack. 'I wonder where the actual seal is,' Lucian thought, scanning the dense tree line. He focused his essence into his eyes. [False Sight: Perceive]. The world changed in his vision. The ordinary forest suddenly bled with invisible currents of energy. Right at the edge of the first row of trees, he spotted t
33. Into the dark
Lucian looked around again. He noticed towards his left, there were fewer hounds coming from that direction. He turned to Isabel. "Listen to me. The plan is this. Towards my left, there aren't many of them. I'll make a way for you so you can run. Don't look back. We'll meet up again. Is that clear?""But what about you, Master?" Isabel asked, concern creeping into her voice.A slow smirk pulled at his face. "I'll be fine. Trust me."The rustling got closer, and then the hounds burst through the brush. There were many of them.Lucian tightened his grip on his sword. He steadied his legs and waited for the wolves to close the distance. When they did, he ran to his left, grabbing Isabel by the arm. He swung his sword in a wide arc, releasing a crescent of white light that cut through the bodies of the wolves. Purple blood sprayed across the forest floor.Isabel blocked her face with her hand to shield herself from the spray.Lucian let go of Isabel's hand. He moved faster, slaughtering e
34. Late Night Runs (1)
Lucian lay in his tent. He waited for Isabel to go to bed. He waited for everywhere to be quiet. He listened to her breathing even out. When he was sure she was asleep, he rose.He removed his blindfold and let his silver eyes breathe. He picked up his long blue coat and pulled it on. Then he stepped out of his tent. The cold night breeze blew, but his coat warmed his body.He looked over at Isabel's tent. She was fast asleep. He could tell she was tired, but never once had she shown it. It had been a two-day journey through the forest. They hadn't slept well since they arrived.Lucian moved to the center of the clearing. He knelt down and dug a small hole with his palm. From his pocket, he pulled out a small leather bag. He reached inside and fetched several red glowing stones. He buried them in the hole and covered them with dirt. Through his False Sight, he watched an invisible dome rise over the clearing, sealing it from the outside."Monster-Dispelling Stones," he muttered, tuckin
35. Late Night Runs (2)
The Mountain King shot its thick, heavy web at Lucian from its stomach. This time Lucian deflected it, charging his sword with Light energy.[Light Strike]His sword cut through the webs. The creature shot another at him.'I can't let those two get far,' Lucian analyzed. He used his charged sword again to cut through the web shot.He moved forward, into the guard of the Mountain King.'I've got to end this quickly,' he whispered to himself, glancing to his side at the deep drop of the mountain's edge.He tightened his grip on his sword. Energy flowed into it, causing the blade to glow with white light. His eyes fixed on the Mountain King's head.[Step and Go]The skill activated, pushing him closer to the Mountain King. Faster than it could catch him.He was now face to face with the beast. He didn't waste time. He swung his glowing sword at the monster's head.It didn't cut through. The blade lodged in its neck.Lucian's eyes widened. "Wha— that was a sure hit."He didn't let go of t
36. Isabel's POV
Isabel woke from her tent. She came out to meet sunlight creeping through the tall trees. She took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh morning air. The forest was quiet. Peaceful. A few birds called softly in the distance. She let the calm settle over her before she turned to look at Lucian's tent. He hadn't come out yet. 'Master is still sleeping. I should cook something before he wakes up.'* She paused, glancing around the clearing. *'But I need wood.' She looked past the bushes and trees, searching for anything odd. Searching for any sign that it wasn't safe. Her eyes swept over the tree line slowly. Nothing moved except the leaves in the breeze. 'It's still early. Maybe the monsters are asleep.' She calmed herself with the thought. She picked up a basket that lay beside her tent. She strapped a short sword to her hip. It was a small blade, but Claire had taught her how to use it. She draped a black short cloak over her shoulders and pulled the hood over her head. She walked pa
37. Isabel: Dae,
The hole in Dae's hand where Lucian had stabbed closed up. The blood stopped dripping. The flesh knitted itself back together in seconds. "And who are you?" Dae said. His voice was flat. His eyes had turned dead cold and remained fixed on Lucian. "I should be asking you that," Lucian replied. He turned to Isabel. "Come on. Let's go." Isabel looked at Dae, then at Lucian. She moved to Lucian's side. Lucian took her hand and turned to leave. Dae's shoulders dropped. He looked at the ground. "Why does everyone leave me? Why does nobody ever want me? I know I'm not human, but humans love, don't they?" Dae raised his head. "I'm sorry, Isabel, for hurting you. I never meant to hurt you. I never fail to always hurt." Isabel stopped walking. Lucian stopped too after she did. He turned back to Dae. "We love and we hate," Lucian said plainly. "We hate mon—" Isabel placed her hand over Lucian's mouth. She shook her head. She didn't want him to say that word. "What are you doing, Isabel?
38. Connecting Threads
Lucian and Isabel continued through the forest, navigating their way back to their tent.Lucian had started to feel fatigue crawl up on him. It hadn't taken its full toll on him yet, but he could feel it waiting. His legs were heavy. His eyelids scraped against his eyes with every blink. His shoulders ached from the Mountain King fight. He hadn't slept. He hadn't eaten. His body was starting to betray him.He had been pushing himself since the Starlight Castle. The Ordeal. The training with Claire. The journey to the Dead Valley. The Bone Singer pack. The Mountain King. Dae. He hadn't stopped. He hadn't rested. This collapse had been building for weeks. He was thinking about everything. His mission in the Dead Valley. Cassian Everstar. The Night-Suns he needed to find to get his memories back. The Everstar carriage he had seen outside the seal. The two cloaked impostors who had tried to kill him. And now Dae.There was a thread to all of them. A connection that linked them together.'
39. The Devil's Location
Lucian rolled out the Devil Hunt map he had found in the cave, spreading it across a flat stone. He was dressed in his blue cloak, his blindfold tied securely around his eyes. Isabel stood beside him, her hair pulled back in a ponytail. He had recovered from his fatigue. Isabel had helped him get back to their tent. She had prepared a meal, and he had rested through the afternoon. The food had done its work. His strength had returned, and his mind was sharp again. It was evening now. The sky was bleeding to orange through the canopy. They had packed their tents and were getting ready to dive deeper into the forest. Lucian pointed at a location on the map. His finger rested on a section circled in red. "This is the place that crazy demon was going to take you. It's a bluish mountainous zone. Even my perception abilities can detect its soft blue color, which means it's filled with essence. An Essence Zone." Isabel turned to Lucian, though his eyes remained fixed on the map.
40. The Princess of White Rose
The clouds in the sky came together. The sky became darker. Little drops of rain fell from them. Lucian felt a drop hit him, then another. He swept his face. 'Rain. I guess the seal doesn't block out rain,' he wondered. Isabel stepped beside Lucian. "We need to find cover, Master." Lucian nodded. He moved his eyes through the forest. He activated his False Sight: Zoom trait. His vision traveled far, moving through the trees. He scanned the area until something caught his attention. A cave. "I found a cave to my left. It's not that far from here. Let's head there," he explained. Isabel moved with him. They traveled through the trees. The forest became windier. The air became cooler. The leaves on the trees rustled. Thunder crackled in the sky. The rain started to pour. Lucian and Isabel finally arrived at the clearing of the cave. Lucian's sight caught blood on the ground. Rectangular glasses lay in the dirt, smeared with red. He had seen them before. They looked familiar. "T
