117. Before Dawn
Lucian hit the inn door running and didn't slow down until he'd said it out loud, because saying it out loud was the only way to make it real fast enough to act on."We move tonight."Garrett was on his feet before the sentence finished. Isabel's needle stilled mid-stitch. Skylar, who'd been half-asleep in the corner chair with his boots still on, had his eyes open and sharp before Lucian had crossed the threshold."Tell me," Garrett said."Wilfred's real job at that gate is sabotage, not decoration. He meant to weaken the wards from the inside so the blood-lock could finally take. He told me everything." Lucian was already moving, checking the strap on his sword, his mind three steps ahead of his mouth. "And we were watched. Someone saw the meeting. It's already on its way back to Dae, if it isn't there already."Skylar was on his feet. "Then Dae doesn't wait for dawn either.""No. He moves the second he knows his window's compromised. Which means our window just went from tomorrow m
116. The move
The courtyard behind the inn had stopped being a place to train and become a place to plan. Garrett had chalked a rough map of the vault approach onto the flagstones — the outer gate, the temple corridor, the vault door itself, every guard post Cyrus had been able to name from memory. Skylar crouched over it with his arms on his knees, tracing a route with one finger. "Two entrances," he said. "The ceremonial one, where the King and his children walk in for the prayer, and a service passage the staff use to bring in the offering torches. If Wilfred's posted at the ceremonial gate, that means Dae wants an audience for whatever this is. He's not sneaking in. He's making an entrance." "He wants me to see it happen," Lucian said. "That's been true since the old quarter. He's never been hiding. He's been staging." "Then we don't give him his stage." Skylar tapped the service passage. "Garrett and Cyrus's people hold the ceremonial route with enough presence that Dae has to think twice
115. The Night Before
Lucian sat with the problem until the candle had burned down past the halfway mark, turning it over the way he turned over everything that didn't have a clean answer. Slowly, from every angle, refusing to commit until he'd exhausted the ones that were wrong.Tell the Emperor, and the White Rose Kingdom's betrayal became public before anyone had a plan for what public did to a city already thin on trust. Wilfred would be named a traitor before he'd had a single chance to be anything else. Noel would lose whatever fragile cover she'd been operating under, and if Dae so much as suspected a leak, two days could collapse into two hours.Say nothing, and they were three people and a six-year-old walking into a plan built on secondhand information from a woman who admitted she didn't fully trust her own nerve.Neither option survived contact with itself for very long."You're doing the thing," Isabel said from across the room, not looking up from the sleeve she was mending, the one she kept
114. The price of allies
Skylar was exactly where Lucian expected to find him. The same back-room bar, the same half-empty glass, the same easy sprawl in a chair that made him look like he owned whatever room he happened to be sitting in. "Two visits in one tournament," Skylar said, not looking up. "People will talk." "I need to know what you want." That got his attention. Skylar's eyes came up slow, and for once the grin didn't arrive with them. "For what?" "For staying in this." Lucian pulled out the chair across from him and sat without waiting for an invitation. "Last night wasn't a favor. You didn't have to cover that flank. You didn't have to warn me about the watchers three nights before that, either. Men like you don't do things for free, so tell me the price before I owe you something I can't afford." Skylar studied him a long moment, the noise of the bar filling the space where his answer should have been. Then he leaned back, arms crossed, and some of the performance finally dropped out of hi
113. What Lily heard?
By morning the arena had turned into something closer to a fortress. Guards stood at every entrance, spears crossed, checking faces against a list nobody seemed to fully understand the criteria for. The tiered seating from last night's chaos had been roped off in sections, scorch marks still dark against the stone where the smoke had poured up. A tournament official, younger than the ones who usually made announcements and visibly unhappy about being the one stuck doing it, read a statement to a much smaller and much quieter crowd than the arena had seen all week. The semifinal between Light and Skylar Bloodgrave would be recorded as unresolved. It would be replayed once security had been reviewed and the finals bracket adjusted accordingly. No date was given. Every match after that would proceed under new restrictions. Fewer spectators per section. Guards stationed in the stands instead of just the tunnels. No cloaks or hoods permitted past the gates. Lucian listened to all
112. The Return of the mark
The crowd was scattering everywhere, they weren't a crowd anymore. It was a tide, and Lucian was swimming against it.Ten thousand people trying to leave through gates built for a fraction of that many, all at once, all screaming. a wall of shoulders and elbows and terror that would have stopped an ordinary man cold. Lucian wasn't normal tonight. Speed of Light tore him through gaps that closed the instant he'd passed, a blur of white cutting upstream while Skylar's footsteps landed hard and steady just behind him, never quite falling out of pace. "Left tier, third section," Skylar shouted over the noise. "That's where the smoke started." "I know where she is." Lucian's False Sight had locked onto Isabel's white silhouette the second the domain shattered and hadn't let go since. He could see the shape of her — upright, moving, alive and he could see the three darker shapes converging on her from three different angles, patient and unhurried in a way that made his stomach drop thr
