CH.111: Came back a Hero
Happiness found its way back into the town. The solemnity in the air had vanished, now replaced with the sounds of cheers filling the entire space. In the middle of this spirit, Jax found peace. He watched the scene laid out before him. When they first arrived, the NPCs did not believe it at first. But now, they were all reunited with the rest of the town and it reminded Jax of the reason why he was fighting. The little ones ran into open arms, some of them crying, some of them laughing, and some just holding on and not letting go. It was the kind of thing that didn't need words to describe in order not to limit the sensation. And for, Jax felt every bit of it, savoured it.With Mira next to him, he wrapped an arm over her shoulder and they watched the scene together. Orin and Eldric stood next to them, sighing in relief. After all that they went through, it was all worth it.Jax's sight caught Forge in the distance where he was speaking with the Elder. She looked over to them and be
CH.112. Strange Box
The strange box sat in Forge's hand. He looked at it, his brows deepened. Across from him, Jax and his friends stood, watching the scene and simply observing. This matter concerned only Forge so they did not want to interrupt. "What is it?" He asked, curiosity lacing his tone."You will know when you take it to the temple. It is a key to the hidden door." The Elder told Forge. He raised his brows as he recognised the pattern. It was the door he used to wonder what was behind it all this time. As much as he lived up the mountain all his life, he never imagined this day would come when he'd be freely granted a way to seeing what was beyond."The hidden door…" he trailed off."Where the remaining secret to our town is held. You must respect it." She warned and he nodded, affirming it."I swear."Jax, Mira, Orin, and Eldric stood by the corner, watching like hawks from the shadows. They were intentional not to disturb the moment between Forge and the Elder. She grabbed a chair and sat o
CH 113: The Witch Hunt
Right before they moved in the direction of the temple, Jax made contact with Forge, locking onto his character data. The team sped off into the woods and Jax conjured a wall of grass, using it as a shield to protect them from one of the systems in his core. Two of the witches were approaching. They split the woods as they entered, sending a blast of fire towards Jax. He did not waste another second as he flipped out of there and the blast took off next to him.Jax growled as he clenched his jaw, snapping his head back to those two witches. From up close, they looked like clowns. Dressed in all black thick clothing and a mask that shielded their face except their glowing scary eyes. He had seen a lot of things in Eternal Throne. Rogue NPCs, dragons, players with god-tier builds. But these two were something else. There was no data signature, no system reading he could pull from them. Nothing. Just those eyes, hollow and glowing against the dark of their masks, locked on him like he wa
CH.114: Awakening the Pendants 101
In the silence of the embrace, Jax's gaze shifted to his friends. Mira watched Jax with pride in her eyes. It warmed Jax's heart, something about her always does. She was his light at the end of the tunnel. When they pulled apart, Jax made Forge look into his eyes."I had a friend. His name was Kade. He was just like you, attached to freedom as well. We didn't start off as the closest of friends. In fact, he was a player. But soon, we became a compass of reflection for each other. He covered my flaws and I did his." Jax narrated, his gaze shifting into the distance as though he could see the memory right in front of his eyes."When he died, it wasn't easy for me to accept. For a long time, I did not allow myself to think about his death. I moved on, fought for my safety, my freedom, got myself involved with the creators, but when I reached rock bottom and the voices came back in my head, I thought I failed him."Jax looked over to his friends, a small smile on his face."I had to wal
CH.115: His Full Potential
The team left the temple and sat outside. For a long time, no one said anything until Orin did."Let's face the truth, I don't think that helped in any way." He said."You're right. It was a waste of time." Forge agreed, his eyes falling to his feet.He stood up and walked away. Mira looked over to Orin, glaring at him before she smacked him on the shoulder.Jax sat silently in one corner, thinking about the pendant. It sounded like the terminal hadn't given them much to help with the issue but there were a few things that Jax picked up there that could actually help. An idea streamed into his mind and he decided to work with it after much pondering. He turned it around in his head from every side, looking for the part where it fell apart, and he couldn't find one. Maybe because it was actually solid. Or maybe because he wanted it to be.He wasn't sure if it would work and it may be a disappointment for everyone in the end but he was done with letting his fear of wanting to be a perfe
CH.116: A Town of Resilient NPCs
The town was at its moment of peril with all the chaos that it had suffered. Jax and his team arrived to the NPCs running about. Fire was burning the roofs, some of the buildings crushed to the foundation. They could hear cries from the distance as NPCs found safety that did not seem to be there."You have to find a way to bring your people together. This is what the Coven wants. Fear and separation." Jax said, his words directed to Forge. After what transpired back at the cliff, Forge respected Jax even more. Also, Jax was right. The Coven had always fed on the sadness and fear that they inflicted on his people. How they made them hide and run into the shadows. It was the same tactic they used when they terminated the last Watcher, which lowered the spirit of the entire town. They were doing the same thing again.Forge looked over to the bank where the Elder was terminated. He approached the exact place where her body was once. There was no trace there anymore, not even the pixel tha
CH.117: Plans before Ambush
Zephyr appeared from behind the group as they stood at the shore of the ocean. The plan was still being discussed on how to defeat the Coven and they did not even notice when he closed in on them."Need a ship, Watcher?" Zephyr said as he kicked his foot against the sand.Forge turned, saw him, and hugged him tightly. "I'm glad you were not hurt.""Yes, it's all been about survival, you know." Zephyr said and Forge nodded, understanding what he meant. "The Elder is gone and we couldn't even prepare a proper funeral to respect her departure.""I'm sorry." Forge muttered, as he head fell to his feet. The feeling of failure still lunged at his chest even when he'd told himself countless times there was nothing he could have done to prevent it."No, don't be. We must punish the Coven. It's just not about making them leave us alone. They will always come back." Zephyr looked at everyone, one after the other. "We have to cut them off totally. Terminate them like they did us.""They work for
CH.118: Face the Coven
The team arrived at the facility. From afar, they had prepared themselves. Each character with their powers charged to the maximum. They expected to be ambushed, to have the witches crash into them any moment but none of that happened.Jax, most of all, was bewildered. He had faced two members of the Coven and he knew they were not the type who wouldn't have the security measure to know invaders were on their territory. However, the team moved in hushed paces and as they passed the arms where no weapons were shoved in their faces, the plans changed.Jax gestured with a flip of his fingers. Though Eldric, Mira, and Orin stayed back, Jax and Forge had other expectations. They got inside the facility, the pendant pulsing against their character data. Jax felt the system close to the completion of the synchronisation and he set the update to automatic.Cold air carried dread as they met silence and no armies waiting for them. Machines ran codes but there was no other entity there. Activat
CH.119: Renewed Hope
More than two weeks had been spent in the small town, and the NPCs continued to show Jax and his team how resilient they were.Their strong willingness not to falter remained a shock to Jax and his team as it was rare to see NPCs act that way. The game had always made them fidget or scared away at any little inconvenience. Much less something as huge as what happened to them, but this little town had proved they could pass through anything and survive it.This was what motivated Jax to stay and even learn more.As the artificial sun burned bright in the sky, the little town was much better. The first day was spent destroying all the facilities the witch Coven built. The town celebrated it by building a bonfire night where they cheered. Forge was given the accolades because he had now learned how to use his powers appropriately. He crushed the building to the foundation and made it sink all the way down to the bottom of the ocean. When it was time to rebuild the town's structure beca
CH.120: What's Next?
Jax placed his hands back into his pockets and in no time, his thought process deepened again. He remembered when he left Lumora all of a sudden. For someone who was even mistreated there, eventually he had to go back. He had to go back to Lumora just to face all that he had passed through for him to get better.Though the game didn't treat NPCs as though they were worth more, the ones who were self-aware had developed some sort of emotional sensation and Jax was aware of this.It was why he hoped Forge wouldn't develop the same confusion he did. He had just become a Watcher and he was leaving too quickly. But Jax decided to trust him.If anything, he knew by now how stubborn Forge could be. Just like Kade.Jax grinned, white teeth flashing and catching the glint from the bright artificial light that shone down in rays from in-between the fluffy clouds."Ah, I guess the smiley face is a texture imprinted on everyone now. Even you
