Chapter 41: Betrayal
Jax was too deep in his own rage to register what was happening around him."Jax." Mira called his name. He didn't hear her. His eyes stayed fixed on the Primordial Overseer.A cold chill ran through his body and settled at his fingertips. He gripped the Flame Sword and charged forward again, yelling with everything he had left. The Primordial Overseer didn't falter. It shifted left and fired a wiring code straight at his chest. The hit landed clean. Jax skidded across the ground and his legs gave out under him.He caught his breath and forced himself up. His teeth ground together. He swallowed the pain and kept it off his face. He thought that was what his team needed from him.He was wrong. He just didn't know it yet.His eyes were bleeding red from the strain. Tears blurred the edges of his vision. Pain registered in every fiber. He didn't stop. The system was going offline. He felt it happening in real time and it scared him more than the Overseer did. The tab flickered in and out
Chapter 42: Prison Arena
When Jax woke up, his lips had cracked. His muscles throbbed and every breath pulled in dust. The fighting spirit that had carried him this far felt buried somewhere deep and unreachable. He kept turning it over in his head. How had he trusted Sera and Lina? They had been off from the start. He should have known.Lina's voice came from somewhere nearby.Jax's muscles strained as he pushed his arms under him and forced himself up. She stood at a distance. The moment he saw her, he didn't think. He moved straight toward her, anger pulling his legs forward before his mind could catch up."I'm sorry, Jax. This is more than you think." She held her ground. "Please stop. Don't come closer."He didn't slow down. His forehead hit something solid and invisible. The moment he made contact, a white ray spiraled outward across the barrier like ripples on water. Then it became visible. Then it tightened inward by a fraction."Where am I?""Every time you hit the barrier, it shrinks." Lina's voice
Chapter 43: Three Beasts
The sword that appeared out of nowhere couldn't do much. Rusted at the edges, blunt at the tip. Jax charged at the beast with it anyway. He rolled away from its incoming claws just before they caught him and slammed himself against the confinement wall. When he steadied himself, he came around from behind and confused the beast. The beast turned. It expected to find Jax in front of it except he wasn't there. He had spent the whole time learning its movements. How it tracked and how it saw."Hey." Jax said from the other side, ready to counterattack. The beast snorted and stirred. The moment its eyes flicked toward the sound, they met the sharp end of the rusted sword. Jax drove it deep into the socket. The air swirled violently as the beast roared, the force blowing Jax's hair back and throwing its body sideways into him.He deflected the hit and kept moving. The sword snapped halfway before it could do permanent damage. Jax didn't wait. He climbed over the beast and drove the broken
Chapter 44: The Room
Jax stood there, not knowing what to do. He called Mira's name to no avail. There was no response. The pain pounded his side again and he dropped on one knee. His health bar was close to flashing red. He saw the system in his mind. He wished he could reach vortex core for a bit of relief. Everything was shut down. He had no access. Someone was in control. The Primordial Overseer, most likely. Suddenly, footsteps pulled his attention around. Lina stood behind him.“Jax, don't." She warned. Just like she did the other time. Jax moved toward her without thinking. He closed the distance fast and then his knees buckled. A current of electricity discharged through him, locking every muscle in his body and dropping him where he stood. When it released, he raised his face from the ground and spat."Why are you doing this?" His teeth clenched harder. His jaw twitched."I'm not." Lina said. Her eyes were already on her tablet. "Come with me."Jax didn't want to move. He weighed it against th
Chapter 45: The Creator's Offer
The room was more of a prison dressed up as a fancy residence. Jax wasn't given the chance to go outside. He had attempted to break the lock countless times but the handle never budged, and the door, which appeared wooden, didn't take a single scratch no matter what he threw at it. Most of the furniture was broken by the third day. He had smashed pieces of it against the door until his arms gave out. The door didn't crack. On that third day, Jax gave up on breaking out and spent most of his time at the window instead, watching the outside because it was the only thing that wasn't controlled. Mira loved nature and Jax immersed himself in it to remind himself of her. He barely slept. His wounds still throbbed with soreness but the warm baths kept them clean and uninfected, and the first aid kit in one of the cabinets gave him enough to disinfect them properly. His body was a map of damage. Fresh wounds layered over old scars, scratches running across skin that had barely healed from
Chapter 46: Pawn
Jax couldn't hold it.His tears came without warning, running down his face before he could pull them back. He stood there staring at where the image had been, chest full of guilt he didn't have strength for. Mira had looked thinner. She had been shivering. He didn't want to think about what her health bar looked like right now. He didn't want to think about how many days they had been sitting in those fields without anyone telling them anything. He yelled before he could stop himself. "Why are you doing this? Leave them out of it. I'm the one you want!""They are leverage." The Creator said simply. "Nothing more."Jax grabbed the collar of CrimsonKing69's form with both hands, knowing full well it wasn't him, knowing it was the Primordial Overseer wearing the shape, knowing the Creator was somewhere behind all of it entirely untouchable. He grabbed it anyway because his hands needed to scratch at something."If you fail, they die. If you succeed, they live. It is that simple." The Cr
Chapter 47: The Tournament
Every second between then and now had kept Jax awake. He spent every moment strategizing, plotting his next move, calculating how he was going to get his team out. Orin's words had been the one thing holding him steady, keeping his focus fixed on what lay ahead rather than what was already done. Outside the walls, an arena had been built. The stadium was enormous, stretching across a vast width of land, and players from across the game world had been filing in since before sunrise. Characters who had heard about the Glitch Overlord and wanted to see him for themselves. The moment word spread that he had been captured, revenue skyrocketed for the old Creators. Tickets sold. Crowds gathered. His suffering had become their entertainment. Many of them had registered to fight him. Not only for the bounty on his head but to stake their own name against the NPC who had taken down high level players in Lumora and lived to be spoken about. Jax felt something different today, even befor
Chapter 48: Survival of the Fittest
The two players moved into formation without a word between them. They didn't need one. LightWeight666 drifted to the left, sword crackling with a fresh charge. Big Boulder took the centre, his stone-hardened skin absorbing the arena light."What a pairing!" The announcer's voice ricocheted across the stadium. "LightWeight666 and Big Boulder. Speed and stone, folks. Speed and stone! How does our Glitch Overlord get out of this one?"The crowd roared in response.Jax's eyes moved between them. His broken arm hung at his side and every small movement sent a fresh pulse of pain up through his shoulder. The suit had taken the edge off Big Boulder's first hit but not nearly enough. If that chest had been pure flesh it would have been different. It wasn't. Whatever Stone Skin Fortification did to Big Boulder's body made him a different category of threat entirely.Jax spotted his sword on the ground several feet away.He ran for it.From the corner of his eye, a bulb of electricity came scr
CH.49: Two Weeks
Pain exploded inside Jax's consciousness like fire and ice colliding. Then it went numb. He felt his own heartbeat slow, every muscle heavy and unresponsive. He couldn't move or even open his eyes and he didn't fight it.Lina's voice cut through the noise of the crowd."Jax!" He felt his collar gripped but couldn't respond to it. "Wake up, Jax!"Slowly, her voice faded into the dark.Something pulled him back. A low, steady humming sound. His eyes opened to a bright room and he shut them again just as fast. He opened them slowly this time, letting the light in by degrees. His legs hung over the edge of a healing slab. He recognised it from his time at Sera's colony, and the recognition settled something cold in his chest. It made sense now why her people had that kind of equipment. Someone had taught them. Someone had supplied it. And it was Lina.He wondered where Sera was. Whether the colony members were safe. He needed to find a way to reach them before anything else went wrong.A
CH.50: The Escape
Jax was a different man now. He thought sharply and moved with intention. He already had plots running in his mind when the door opened.Lina stood at the threshold. She smiled at him."You're usually asleep by now. I suppose we achieved quite a lot in two weeks." She said it like she was admiring her own work."So you were spying on me." Jax scoffed. "And for the record, we still aren't friends. What do you want?"Lina didn't look pleased but she filed it away. He was right. This was business. Her survival and his, tied to the same thread whether either of them liked it."The tournament is tomorrow. Are you prepared?""As best as I can be." Jax stood and he stood differently. His chest filled out the thin fabric he was wearing. His arms were wider, biceps defined where there had been nothing before. His stomach had solidified, his ribs reinforced with thick muscle. When he moved, he bounced with a steadiness that hadn't been there two weeks ago. A quiet agility that didn't announce i
