CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR: Battle At Snakehills — Mozuzu's Determination
Mozuzu woke up finally from a long dream. He could remember just bits of it. His last clear memory had been of glaring at the Snake hills in the distance, when a warm gale had blown over him. It was memorable because it was still winter. But he noticed nothing. He didn’t notice anything else for the two months he spent in Snakehills, marching house to house, establishment to establishment, seeking. He still had no idea what he sought. But he remembered the face of the one who sought. Just now, when that foreign energy made him wake up, he saw a clear image of that face. And he knew that he’d been under an enchantment the entire time. The mayor was asking him a question, but his mind was no longer there. He began to force a recollection of the past two months, ignoring even the Messenger, who elbowed him constantly. He didn’t recollect much, but his anger had grown red hot. He’d been used as a pawn to hunt a demon. It might have been better if the demon had been hunted to be kille
CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE: Battle At Snakehills — Arm Yourselves
Gilgal sat cross-legged on his bed, regulating his breathing in time with the swirl of his core. Five days had passed since his core formation, and the Masters had kept their word.None of them came to disturb him since then, expect yesterday when Master Jhanice brought his new enchanted medallion and gauntlets. The Master had stayed with him through the afternoon, discussing their comprehension of lightning. She’d not been surprised that his affinity level was already at 41%, claiming that he had the magic level to support that, prior to his core formation. But she was still surprised by his lightning, which she claimed was too violent. He felt his lightning was different too, but not in the way she did. Nur had come to see him also, along with Austin. Some other Purgers came to congratulate him also on his advancement. The hatred hidden behind the smiles no longer revealed itself these days. It seemed that his constant advancements and tutoring of the Purgers had built good w
CHAPTER THIRTY SIX: Battle At Snakehills — The Arrival
Carilliene Regina Immortalis scowled fiercely. Yvaine watched her and Jaron, frowning. Both of them were still busy exchanging glances with the dead Knight, and the charred temporary teleportation sigil, as though either was important then. She would wager her curiosity that the Order was already alerted and on the way. With the loss of their teleportation sigil, there was little else to do, but they shouldn’t stand there waiting for the Order to capture them easily. She looked longingly at the open road leading from the alley to the edge of town. Just a few kilometers. Just a few more minutes for her suppression to leave her. She still had Jaron’s teleportation sigil. “The Prince take the Order and their damnable Purgers!” Jaron finally cursed loudly and foully. Thunder rumbled above, and Yvaine edged away from him. The Cambion turned to glare at Carilliene. “I take it your mother didn’t give you another?”“I would have used it by now if she did.”“You would? Wonderful. I thou
CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN: Battle At Snakehills — Sword Bestowment
Gilgal stood outside their temporary camp, frowning at the barrier. He’d made it into a habit whenever he had the time for it. He could feel some traces of the aspect which made that barrier, but even after intermittent hours staring for the past day, he still couldn’t identify what he was feeling, never mind comprehending it. Master Wyvrill had said that it was the aspect of death, but Gilgal found that stranger than what his senses failed to identify. It was true that anything can be comprehended as an aspect, but he’d never thought of death among them. How would one even go about comprehending death? And what would he required to get to the Solidified Realm through the comprehension of death? It was terrifying, if true. He sighed and looked away. He had the same problem with all the other aspects. Comprehending an element was hard enough already, and it was a physical part of the world. To comprehend a part of the world that wasn’t physical stumped him. Master Wrenz claimed
CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT: Battle At Snakehills — Message To Nialli
Nur climbed down from her observation post on the tree, sliding smoothly to the forest floor. She pocketed the looking glass, shook twigs and leaves from her uniform and stamped her legs in her boots. From what she’d known and seen, they were just a day away from Yellowstone, the Capital of Nialli. A day of hard traveling to cross the border into Nialli, another day of harder traveling to cross the city of Pinfold and its outer towns, and now she could see the distant walls of the Capital. Their journey had been executed as fast as only Purgers could achieve it, otherwise it would take them three to four days to get to the Capital from Snakehills. But now that they were here, she didn’t see what she expected to see. None of the towns around Pinfold had so much as whispered about the demon occupation of their neighbor. Even Pinfold was quiet. The Messengers had known, though, and Nur charged them to spread the news. At Pinfold, two Knights who’d wintered there, had joined their p
CHAPTER THIRTY NINE: Battle At Snakehills — Message To Eros
Lilith adjusted herself on the throne again. Nothing seemed to work. She raised her head and frowned surreptitiously at Inanna, but her daughter gave her a stern frown, then a very sweet one. She scowled, but settled down again, resisting the urge to tap her fingers on the armrest. Inanna would say it was the price to be paid to rule, but she’d never understood that. She’d been chosen as the ancestor of the succubi and incubi because it her strength, nothing else. If that strength led her to the throne, then why wasn’t it enough? But she knew the answer to that too. There was simply a difference between knowing, understanding and accepting. Her power have continued to grow, and as at two centuries ago, she became a Transcendent being; a level that none of the other monarchs of Eros ever achieved in their lifetime. She had the power to become the greatest monarch, but not the temperament. That was why she had Inanna with her always. It always surprised her though, how someone with
CHAPTER FOURTY: Battle At Snakehills — Demon Lord Hornker 1
“Why is he coming here, mother?”“I suppose we’ll fund out soon enough. But if I had to guess, I’d say it has something to do with the death of that soldier your sister accompanied to the Middle Aether,” Lilith answered. She stopped her hand from stroking Inanna’s hair. “It can’t be. Why should he care about one demon?”“He doesn’t. Aren’t you supposed to be the one with knowledge of politics, daughter? I suspect that the Cambion must have told him of his meeting with me, and that is enough for Hornker. He cares about what I’m planning in the Middle Aether, and he’ll use this soldier as the price of admittance.”“But we cannot let him know about that—”“Maybe, daughter. His arrival now might just be what we need. We’ll see. He’s here.”“The Demon Lord Hornker, and his entourage!” the Steward announced loudly. Inanna looked up curiously. A being marched into the throne room, with all the fiery aura of a sovereign general. His blood red and silver embroidered cape billowed be
CHAPTER FOURTY ONE: Battle At Snakehills — Demon Lord Hornker 2
Hornker moderated his excitement. Wyvrill Wolf was a thorn on his side, beyond doubt, and the man’s passing would benefit him immensely. There were seven Demon Lords in the Lower Aether, and he was the weakest of them all, which was why he agreed readily to join forces with the other weaker Lords in conquering the nameless continent. But then the Prince died, and that dream vanished. Years later, Wyvrill had risen, and the man had almost singlehandedly repelled all other efforts he made to conquer the continent. What he had already in Poles was not enough. Not at all. The feral devils were more numerous than they were a century ago, and he, like the other Lords, knew it was impossible to kill them all. Moving to the Middle Aether was the only solution, and coexisting with the humans was not an option! He looked up at Lilith, at her assured smile, and doubts crept in his mind. Even if she was now Transcendent, she was still an infant. The other Demon Lords who were Transcendent wou
CHAPTER FOURTY TWO: Battle At Snakehills — Master Jhanice's Bias
Jhanice looked at the barrier around Snakehills. She could still feel him through that. It puzzled her why he hadn’t escaped already, especially since he must be aware that Wyvrill was here. Four days now she’d felt him. He seemed too calm, although she couldn’t know that from just the aura of his affinity. But she suspected so. His face on that first day after the barrier was raised and they arrived had all but confirmed it. He wore that infuriating smile as that Demon Princess declared that the people of Snakehills were her hostages. His face had changed, sure enough, but there was no hiding the soul behind those eyes, nor that smile. He was the one who declared that the entire town would be slaughtered if the Purgers dared to try breaking the barrier. She believed him. And so did Wyvrill, apparently. Even now, she couldn’t convince herself that they’d been right in what they did to him all those years ago. She was complicit, even if she was still had no authority among the
CHAPTER FOURTY THREE: Battle At Snakehills — Arrival
Yvaine fiddled with the temporary teleportation sigil in her hands. The past few days had made the wood feel very familiar to her hands. She felt all its edges, markings and cracks, and the energy needed to activate it wouldn’t cost her anything she couldn’t bear to lose. Humming to herself, she fiddled with the wood still. But her gaze was focused on the Eastern wall as though she could see through it to the Purger camp, and to the man who held her mind with a vice-like grip. She wondered more than once whether he was burning with the same desire she was. But it was absurd. Her burning desire was because she’d ingested his blood. He’d also taken a sample of her blood, she knew, but he wouldn’t be stupid enough to taste it. If he had, she’d not be feeling him now. Or maybe not. With the mystery of his blood, who knew what – if anything – could kill him. Head cocked slightly to the side, she adjusted herself on the bed that Carilliene had seen fit to provide her. Her gown was new
