CHAPTER FOURTY FOUR: Battle At Snakehills — Running From Temptation?
Gilgal stepped out from the tent he shared with some other Knights. He was expressionless, even though his mind was in turmoil. The ground had started trembling visibly since the break of dawn, but he’d been feeling it since the night before, announcing the arrival of the Nialli army. He joined the other Knights now, and looked at the bobbing flags of the army. Their line snaking around the hills that had given the town its name.He couldn’t muster the same smiles that had appeared on the faces of the other Knights. And as he looked around at them, he realized he was not the only one not smiling or cheering. Only few of the veterans smiled, and no wonder. Purgers like him only had two instances where they’d had occasion to fight against demons with an army. First was in Poles, and second was more recently at the Nkazani pass. The Knights who’d survived those nightmares had the same look he did now. They’d do their duty, but a massacre will occur here in no time.He looked up at
CHAPTER FOURTY FIVE: Battle At Snakehills — A Powerful Sense
As agreed, Lilith and Hornker met together again on the fifth day since they made the decision to eliminate Wyvrill Wolf. They met at the Northern border of both countries; outside the direct control of either monarch. The Northern border was also the border farther from the other old Transcendent beings who roam the Holy lands. Their undertaking was going to be a very big one – the biggest since the end of the war in the nameless continent 1,000 years ago.The structure of the Lower Aether was similar to that of the Middle Aether in the sense that it was a collection of continents separated by massive bodies of water. But it differed from the Middle Aether in the number of continents and size of the landmass, and more especially, the number of Islands. At the North and South poles were two massive continents. The Northern continent was claimed by the Vitea race, ruling in the country of Phobs, although they contested the land with the feral devils. The continent in the South Pole
CHAPTER FOURTY SIX: Battle At Snakehills — So Bored
A being was watching a crystal ball. His hair, beard and eyebrows were golden in colour. His eyes glowed like the Sun itself, peering through the wrinkle-lined skin around them. He stroked his beard with all the energy needed to raise his hand. Each stroke came minutes after the first one. So slow. So languid. So bored. His robe blazed like the Sun, but this had no effect on his vision, nor did it compete with the light in his room. The room, which dazzled: myriad mirrors and glass reflecting and refracting the light of the Sun blazing through the single floor to ceiling window that took up one wall of the room. The room was filled with many items and machines which made use of lenses, most of which were used for stargazing. The crystal ball was just one of many, albeit not used for stargazing, and it was the biggest. A single drop of blood appeared suspended in the center of the crystal. It was this drop of blood that the man watched. His eyes didn’t blink. The blood was stat
CHAPTER FOURTY SEVEN: Battle At Snakehills — The Battle Begins
Wyvrill shook uncontrollably. His vision tinged red, and a roar tore from his throat, utilizing all his Resonance with the world. Not waiting for the rest of the people, he took a step towards the demons. The world warped with that step, and he was gone from the hill. His focus was on those powerful auras he’d felt. His roar had succeeded in throwing the weaker demon soldiers into a panic, and the still rational part of him hoped the ones he left behind would make good use of the opportunity. He’d just spoken to Gilgal as though the death of 20,000 residents of Snakehills was meaningless, but their death had shaken him. Rage filled his heart. Every time the demons appeared, they took something from him!1,000 years ago, they forced Master Rodevak to the decision which might have well cost him his life. In Poles, they caused the rapid decline of the Order, and now again, they’d wiped Snakehills from the maps. The other times, he wasn’t around, nor able to act, but this time he mea
CHAPTER FOURTY EIGHT: Battle At Snakehills — Knight Austin's Dread
Knight Austin couldn’t care too much about the Knights who were assigned with him as he whirled through demons, sword and shards of ice cutting a clear field around him.He was stationed today at the Eastern flank of the army camp to guard the cannons. He preferred this position to the other two he’d been given before. Here, he could drown his thoughts with the reports of the cannons, and there were few demons who made it this close. But that was only the truth on that first assignment. Now, he could hardly catch his breath for murderous and suicidal demons, throwing themselves at him. His sword arm was already weak, and he could feel the fatigue that came from overexertion of his magic, which he’d not felt in centuries. Now he wished his reclusiveness hadn’t stopped him from joining the other Purgers in practicing with Gilgal. But it was too late for regrets. However he looked at it, he saw his death this day. It wasn’t even a thought to terrify him. A moment of respite provi
CHAPTER FOURTY NINE: Battle At Snakehills — Knight Austin's Laughter
He knew it was just a matter of time before one of them was sent. Master Jhanice and Wrenz were far away at the other battle positions, engaged by even more powerful demons. Nobody would be helping him here, he reminded himself. The aura he felt from that succubus was enough for him to judge her level. She was at the Manifestation Realm, and most likely above the 55% level. Based on magic level alone, he wouldn’t even stand a chance back when he was still fresh and well rested. Now? He chuckled mirthlessly. His hand still tightened around the hilt of his sword and he started back towards the cannons at a run. Every cannon ball and fire ball that managed to fly from his position was more dead demons and saved humans. Less demons for tomorrow. His mind was made up. As he rushed back, his mind wandered to the jotter entry he’d left uncompleted in his bag back at the camp. That journal might never be completed now, and if he died, the chances of its contents being read by another e
CHAPTER FIFTY: Battle At Snakehills — Calamity And Opportunity
Gilgal was exhausted. He had no knowledge of time outside, but he wouldn’t be surprised if he’d spent nearly 200 years already. It felt that long to him. What was happening outside was not his business at the moment, and he was only able to even consider those things now because the crisis was finally ending. The moment that massive crack opened, and that tyrannical energy surged into his body, he’d entered this state. He could faintly remember tumbling down that hill, but that was his last memory of the outside world. All his mind had been focused on the battle within his own body. A battle that he’d been on the verge of losing, more than once. That tyrannical energy had charged straight at his lightning core, bypassing the space as though it didn’t even exist. His lightning core had immediately shown signs of exploding, and his mind rushed in to enclose and reinforce it. But how can one protect against chaotic energy? His core continued to show signs of exploding as it
CHAPTER FIFTY ONE: Battle At Snakehills — Awakening
Gilgal opened his eyes to the well-lit interior of a sick tent. The sharp scent of spirits, blood and pain assaulted his nose, forcing him to cut off information from them. He noticed that he was lying on one of the beds. His eyes had already adjusted well enough to judge the time of day as dawn. The candles couldn’t fool him in that regard, and so was the relative silence of sleep within the tent. He gently rose to a sitting position, careful not to wake the sleepers. His ears were sharper than before, and they’d started working again as he rose. Shuffling under bed sheets reached his ears along with snores and grunts. Nocturnal animals called out outside the tent in a muffled tirade. He groaned silently as the exhaustion to his mind hit him like a headache. Each move of his body seemed too light and easy to him, as though he could fly off at the simplest jump. Then he heard a sound and turned slowly to the bed beside his.Nur looked at him with wide eyes and a gaping mouth. S
CHAPTER FIFTY TWO: Battle At Snakehills — Meeting The Aunts
Too fast. Too powerful. The demon exploded the moment Gilgal’s sword got close to them. Blood and chunks of meat and bone rained around him, but he was already moving. He’d heard the sounds of sneaking feet and guessed at the source. Now, he was very sure. Even though his own body’s power had startled him, he didn’t let that slow him down. Two more of the demons were about twenty feet away from him, but they turned to the sound of exploding flesh. Their eyes widened as they turned. Gilgal crossed the distance in a few steps, and his sword whirled around him, blasting apart those two also. “Rise and bare swords!” he roared, striding through the camp. He didn’t feel the cold wind on his bare chest. His roar worked, as soldiers reacted, stumbling out of tents with weapons bared. He fell upon another group of demon soldiers, and a single slash of his sword from meters away blasted them apart. He was struggling to control his power output as the Masters had taught him, but his str
CHAPTER FIFTY THREE: Battle At Snakehills — Battling The Aunts
Gilgal was startled. He had no idea there was such enmity between them and his mother. But he was startled only a moment. When Carilliene the third closed in, he already was in Gebo stance. His core rotated rapidly, and energy surged into every atom of his body, then he channeled it to his hands, in a very powerful Gebo’s point. The attack forced Carilliene the third to falter in her charge, but it was already too late. With her forward momentum and Gilgal’s speed, his sword tip was just an inch from piercing her heart, when Carilliene the sixth interfered, parrying the blow with her own sword. The force of the thrust still snapped her sword back into Carilliene the third’s face, forcing both of them back meters away. Gilgal seized his chance and closed in. His sword drew arcs in the air and ground as strike after strike flew towards the demons in less than a second. Both Succubi defected perfectly, but the power behind each blow still impacted them, keeping them forever in
