CHAPTER 21: THE HAND I KNEW
The transport was not built for speed. It was built for hauling scrap, and it drove like it resented me."Left," Mira shouted from the back seat. "Nova, left!"I yanked the wheel. The frame groaned. A slab of rusted plating slid past the window, close enough to rip off my side mirror."You said you would figure it out," Nyx-0 said in my head. It was wolf-shaped, wedged between my seat and the door with its claws dug into the upholstery."I'm figuring.""You are figuring us into a wall.""Then stop distracting me.""I am the only reason you have not hit it yet."I checked the mirror. Red lights, closer now. Four Beasts, maybe five, fanning out across the dust in a hunting line. District engines, built to run down anything that moved."Ten minutes," Kira said from the seat behind me. Her voice was flat and calm, and I hated how calm it was. "They have long-range scanners. They won't lose us in open ground.""Then where do we go?""Ravine Nine. Northeast. The walls are narrow. Beasts can
CHAPTER 22: THE OFFER
For a second, nobody in Ravine Nine moved. Then I said the only word my mouth would form."Nexus?"Silence on the line. Just the low growl of Beast engines and the wind cutting through the rock."He can't hear you," Nyx-0 said quietly. "That's a recording, or a relay. He's not standing next to a microphone waiting for you to answer.""How do you know?""Because if he were, Harrow-Nine wouldn't be smiling right now." Its ears flattened. "And he is smiling. I can hear it in his voice."The loudspeaker crackled again, and this time it was Harrow-Nine, not Nexus."A gift," the Pilot said, "to show good faith. You have questions. We have answers. Surrender the Core, and you may ask them yourself.""Surrender," I repeated."Peacefully. No cage. No collar. You have my word.""Your word," I said, "came from a man who just called my friend a stolen Core of unknown origin.""Semantics for a nervous public," Harrow-Nine said, unbothered. "I don't require you to like the wording. I require you to
CHAPTER 23: WHAT THE FIRE LEFT
We didn't go back. That was the first thing everyone agreed on, and it was the only thing. Kira wanted to push north, toward a Resistance cache she wouldn't name. Mira wanted to circle wide and see the wreckage from a distance, just enough to know what we were dealing with. Dr. REN-9 wanted both of us to shut up and let her think.I wanted to know if Nexus had been anywhere near that fire."You're not going back," Kira said, for the third time, without taking her eyes off the road."I didn't say I was.""You were thinking it so loud I could hear it from here.""That's Nyx-0's job.""I plead the fifth," Nyx-0 said in my head. It had curled into cat shape on the dashboard, small and gray and deceptively harmless-looking, its tail flicking in slow arcs. "Also, for the record, I agree with her. Whatever that explosion was, it is not our business tonight.""It could be him.""It could be a fuel line," Nyx-0 said. "Beasts run hot. They have been known to explode without any help from anybod
CHAPTER 24: THE PRICE OF QUIET
I woke to the sound of Mira swearing at a dead terminal."Come on," she muttered, fingers flying over a cracked keyboard. "Come on, come on, you ugly piece of scrap."The relay station was gray with early light, sand hissing against the walls outside. REN-9 was still asleep on the cot, one arm flung over her eyes. Kira stood near the door with her arms crossed, watching the horizon like she expected it to grow teeth."What are you doing?" I asked, sitting up. Nyx-0 uncurled from my lap and stretched, wolf-shaped now, joints popping."Trying to pull the District's traffic," Mira said. "If Harrow-Nine radioed home about last night, it went through a relay somewhere. If I can find which one, I can figure out how close his forces actually are.""And the explosion?""Working on it." She didn't look up. "Whatever caused it, it happened on a frequency I don't recognize. Not District. Not Resistance.""Then whose?""That," Mira said, "is the question I'm trying to answer before it answers its
CHAPTER 25: THE NOBLE AND THE DYING THING
The frequency didn't belong to a Ghost.Mira figured that out about ten seconds before the door of the relay station blew off its hinges, which was ten seconds too late to do anything useful with the information."Down!" Kira shouted, and shoved me sideways into the terminal bank. Sand and grit rained through the doorway. When it cleared, a figure stood silhouetted against the morning light, tall and straight-backed, wrapped in a coat too clean for the Bone Yard."I apologize for the door," the figure said. "I did knock. Nobody answered.""Who," I said, still on the floor, "knocks by blowing up a door?""Someone in a hurry." The figure stepped inside, and the light caught her face. Young, sharp-boned, with pale hair cropped close and a Pilot's collar at her throat, though it wasn't a District collar. Something older. Something that had been polished, not issued. "You're Nova Miles-7.""Depends who's asking.""Sera-404." She said it like a title, not a name, chin lifted, and behind her
CHAPTER 26: WHAT NULL MEANS
"I can't," I said.Sera-404 looked at me like I'd slapped her."Can't, or won't?""Can't." I held up my hands, helpless. "REN-9's right. Whatever Nyx-0 does, it's not a faucet I can point at other people's Beasts. It happens through me. Through whatever this is." I touched my chest, where the bond lived, invisible and heavy. "I don't even understand the rules. I definitely can't lend them out.""Then learn the rules," Sera-404 said. "Quickly. She doesn't have time for you to be ignorant."Nyx-0's hackles rose."Careful," it said aloud, low and even. "He's trying.""Trying isn't saving her.""No," Nyx-0 agreed. "But insulting him won't either. If you want my help, you'll want me calm. I don't do my best thinking when I'm being growled at."That stopped her. She looked at Nyx-0 properly for the first time, not as a means to an end, but as something with its own opinion about the situation."You can actually help," she said slowly. "Can't you. Not just theoretically.""I don't know," Nyx
CHAPTER 28: WHAT THE GRAVEYARD REMEMBERS
Aurelith slept. It was the first real sleep she'd had in what Sera-404 guessed was months, deep and even, her great silver sides rising and falling in a slow, peaceful rhythm none of us wanted to disturb. Sera-404 sat beside her with one hand resting on her flank, eyes red-rimmed, saying nothing. Nyx-0 hadn't moved from where it had collapsed after the voice went silent. It lay curled in on itself, wolf-shaped, smaller somehow than I'd ever seen it, like whatever had happened had cost it something it couldn't spend twice. "You should rest too," I said, sitting down beside it. "I don't sleep." "You just laid there for twenty minutes not moving." "That's called thinking, Nova. Try it sometime." I almost smiled. Almost. "You said you remember fragments," I said carefully. "A name you won't say. A voice you thought you'd never hear again." I paused. "Was that voice back there the same one?" Nyx-0 was quiet for a long moment. "No," it said finally. "That one was new. Who
CHAPTER 29: NOT DISTRICT, NOT RESISTANCE
Kira dragged me behind a fallen slab of rusted hull before I'd even processed the word "worse." "Stay down," she hissed. "Kira, what unit doesn't have markings you recognize? You know every Directive patrol in this quadrant." "That's the problem." Her eyes tracked the dust cloud, calculating. "I know every Directive patrol. I know every Resistance cell. I know the Ghosts, at least by rumor. This isn't any of them." Sera-404 crouched beside Aurelith, one hand pressed flat against the great Beast's flank, both of them tense and still. "Let me see," Sera-404 said, and before Kira could stop her, she'd risen just enough to peer over the slab. Her face went white. "Sera?" I said. "Those markings," she said slowly, "are Founder cipher. Pre-District. My family's oldest guard formations used that exact sigil, three generations back, before the District absorbed the court militias into its own structure." "So they're your people?" "No." Her voice was tight. "My family stopped using th
CHAPTER 30: WHAT REN-9 BURIED
We didn't move until Dr. REN-9 was ready to talk, and she wasn't ready for a long time. She sat with her back against the rusted hull, knees drawn up, hands wrapped around a canteen she wasn't drinking from. Sera-404 kept watch on the ridge. Kira paced. Mira had gone quiet in the way she only did when she was scared enough to stop narrating everything out loud."Before I was a doctor for the Resistance," REN-9 said finally, "I was a researcher for the District. A long time ago. Before you were born, Nova.""I didn't know that.""Nobody does. I've spent twenty years making sure of it." She stared at the canteen like it might answer for her. "I worked in a division that studied Cores before they were called Cores. Back then, we called them Fragments. Pieces of whatever the Forge scattered when it shattered.""Founder tech," Sera-404 said quietly."Founder tech," REN-9 agreed. "The Founders didn't just build the old court militias, Sera. They built the Forge. Or they found it, and learne
CHAPTER 31: THE EASTERN RIDGE
The Graveyard didn't look like a graveyard.I'd expected bones. Wreckage. The husks of dead Beasts scattered across broken ground, the way scavenger stories always described it. Instead, we crested the eastern ridge and found a valley, wide and strange, filled with structures that didn't belong to any age I recognized. Smooth black spires, half-sunk in the dust, arranged in a pattern too deliberate to be ruins."That's not a graveyard," Mira said quietly. "That's a facility.""It's both," Sera-404 said, her voice flat. "It always has been. We just told better stories about the first part so nobody asked about the second."Kira crouched low, scanning the valley with a pair of battered field glasses. "Six Founder units, all converged near the central spire. No visible perimeter, which either means they're arrogant or they don't expect anyone to make it this far.""Which is it?" I asked."With Founders?" Kira lowered the glasses. "Probably both."Nyx-0 pressed close against my leg, wolf-
