CHAPTER 46: THE FIRST PERIMETER
We saw the Facility's outer fence before we saw anything else, a line of pale light cutting straight across the horizon, too clean, too deliberate to be anything natural."That's not a wall," Kira said, lowering her field glasses. "That's a perimeter grid. Active. Which means someone's still powering this place, three years after Echo's last information.""Of course they are," Echo said grimly. "Whatever they're doing here, it was never meant to be temporary."We'd made good time over the past two days, pushing hard through terrain that grew stranger the further north we traveled, the familiar rust and dust of the Bone Yard giving way to something flatter, more uniform, as if the land itself had been leveled on purpose generations ago and never allowed to heal into anything resembling wilderness again.Sera-404 brought Aurelith to a halt beside the transport, the great Beast's nostrils flaring at something none of the rest of us could sense."She smells other Beasts," Sera-404 said qu
CHAPTER 45: THE EDGE OF THE MAP
We traveled three days toward the Primary Wing, and on the third night, Kira finally called a halt earlier than usual, her face set in a way that told me she had something to say before we went any further."This is the last easy ground," she said, as we made camp in the lee of a wind-carved ridge. "Past this point, according to Echo's old maps, we're inside territory the Resistance never charted. No safe houses. No caches. No allies waiting to help if something goes wrong.""We knew that was coming," I said."Knowing it and standing at the edge of it are different things," Kira said. "I want everyone to understand exactly what we're choosing, before we choose it for good."Echo, sitting near the fire with her weathered coat pulled tight against the cold, nodded slowly."She's right to say it plainly," Echo said. "Once we cross into the Primary Wing's outer perimeter, there's no guarantee of a path back the way we came. The Facility doesn't simply guard its secrets. It actively hunts
CHAPTER 44: THE WEIGHT OF A NAME
Nobody spoke for a long moment. The alcove's single steady light seemed suddenly too bright, too unforgiving, as if it had been waiting all this time to illuminate exactly this."That's not possible," I said finally. "Nexus has been trapped in that pod for three years. You saw him yourself, Echo. He's barely alive. He can't walk out of a cell, find his way across half the Bone Yard, break into a sealed Archive, and walk out again with a stolen file.""No," Echo agreed. "Not in the condition you found him in. Which means either my assumption is wrong, or something about his condition has changed more recently than any of us realized.""Or someone did it on his behalf," REN-9 said slowly. "Acting under his authority, or his name, even if he never physically left that pod."Nyx-0's head came up sharply. "The Weaver.""Possibly," Echo said. "Though I'd expect the Weaver to simply take what it wanted without bothering to disguise the theft as anything connected to Nexus specifically. If it
CHAPTER 43: WHAT ECHO KNEW
Echo led us deeper into the Archive, past rows of crystalline shelves that seemed to stretch on longer than the chamber's outer walls should have allowed, until we reached a smaller alcove set apart from the rest, lit by a single steady light rather than the pulsing blue of the main room."This is where I used to work," she said, running a weathered hand along a console built into the alcove's wall. "Back when this place still had a purpose I could live with.""You said you could help find Nexus," I said. "And my memory. Start with Nexus. Please."Echo studied me for a long moment before nodding, her fingers moving across the console with the ease of long familiarity."The Facility isn't a single building," she said, as the console's surface flickered to life, casting pale light across her face. "It's a network, spread across several sites, most of them buried the same way this one is. Nexus was taken to what we used to call the Primary Wing, back when I still had clearance to know su
CHAPTER 42: NOT ALONE
Kira had her pistol trained on the stairwell before anyone else moved, her whole body coiled with the stillness of someone who'd done this a hundred times before."How many?" I asked, keeping my voice low."One signature," Mira said, checking her tablet. "Moving slow. Deliberate." She frowned. "Not Founder-cipher. Not Directive standard either. I don't recognize the pattern at all.""Could be a scavenger," Sera-404 offered. "Someone who followed the same old maps we did.""Scavengers don't move like that," Kira said. "Too controlled. Too quiet. Whoever's coming down those stairs knows exactly where they're going."Nyx-0, still standing before the NX-07 shelf with something raw and unsettled in its posture, finally turned its attention toward the stairwell."I don't sense danger," it said slowly. "Not the way I sensed it at the spire, or with the Weaver's creature. This feels different. Familiar, almost.""Familiar isn't the same as safe," REN-9 said."I know. I'm just telling you what
CHAPTER 41: THE FIRST SITE
The closest of the three marked sites turned out to be a half-day's travel northeast of the cache, across a stretch of the Bone Yard so flat and featureless that Kira kept checking her instruments twice, as if the ground itself might be lying to her about how little it contained."According to this," she said, tapping the old cipher map against her palm as the transport rattled over cracked earth, "we should be standing on top of it in about twenty minutes. And there's nothing here. No ruins. No wreckage. Not even the usual scatter of old Beast bones you get everywhere else in this territory.""Maybe that's the point," REN-9 said from the back seat, watching the horizon with the same wary focus she'd worn since Ashfall. "If you wanted to hide something permanently, you wouldn't bury it under a mountain of obvious wreckage. You'd bury it under nothing. Make the emptiness the camouflage.""That's a very unsettling way to think about architecture," Mira said, though she didn't disagree.
