Chapter One: What's Left Standing
"Don't you dare close your eyes on me."Dax pressed both hands against the wound and leaned his whole weight into it. Blood pushed up between his fingers anyway. Warm. Too much of it."Feels like sleeping," the man under him mumbled. "Just for a minute.""No minutes. Look at me."The man's eyes rolled back toward Dax's face. Good. That was something.Above them, the pharmacy ceiling groaned. A shelf of vitamin bottles slid sideways and hung there, stuck at an angle no ceiling should allow. The Grid did that now. Gravity picked favorites. Dax had learned not to trust a floor just because it looked flat."Talk to me," Dax said. "Name. Anything.""Corwin. Ray Corwin.""Ray. You're not dying in a pharmacy. Too stupid a place for it."A weak laugh turned into a cough. Blood on his teeth, not a lot. Lung wasn't hit. Just the leg, and the leg was bad enough.Dax's HUD flickered at the corner of his vision, the way it always did when a body dropped past some threshold only the System cared ab
Chapter Two: Forty-Eight Hours
"You can't just decide I'm not scared.""I'm not deciding anything. I'm asking you to eat."Wren pushed the can of beans around with a bent fork instead of eating them. Dax sat across from her on an overturned shelf, elbows on his knees, watching her not eat. The pharmacy had gone quiet around them. Ray was asleep in the back corner, leg propped up, chest moving steady. Priya was somewhere out front, running numbers on a cracked tablet she refused to explain."Forty-eight hours," Wren said. "That's not a lot of time to grow a Class.""No," Dax said. "It's not.""You're supposed to lie to me right now. Tell me it'll be fine.""I don't lie to you. Never have."She set the fork down. In the low light her face looked older than sixteen, the way most kids' faces did now. Nobody got to keep the soft parts of being young. The Grid took those first."What happens if I don't trigger something," she said. "Say it plain. Not the word Ray used."Dax held her eyes. She'd earned plain."They move U
Chapter Three: The Man Who Didn't Die
"Doc?"The voice hit Dax before the face fully registered, and even after six months it still did something to his chest, some old wartime reflex snapping to attention.Marcus stood under the streetlight like he'd been waiting there his whole life instead of just the last few seconds. Taller than Dax remembered, or maybe just standing straighter now, shoulders squared in armor plating that hummed faint blue along the seams. His level indicator sat steady above his head, the number too high to be real and somehow completely real anyway.M. REYES — LV 61Behind him, two Vanguard scouts held position, weapons low but ready, watching Dax and Wren with the flat attention of people who'd been trained not to react until told to."Marcus." Dax kept his voice even. Kept his body between Wren and the street. "You're early.""Sweeps don't run on a clock anymore. You know that." Marcus's mouth did something close to a smile. Not unkind. That was the part that always threw people off about him, th
Chapter Four: The Broker
"There's a way to force a trigger. There's just a cost attached, and you're not going to like it."Priya said it flat, no dressing it up, tablet balanced on her knee while Ray slept in the corner and Wren pretended not to listen from three feet away."I'm listening," Dax said."There's a controlled encounter two blocks into Zone 2. Low-tier spawn, capped level, doesn't scale past a certain threshold. People go there specifically to trigger Classes because the danger's real but it's survivable if you know the fight pattern." Priya turned the tablet so he could see a crude hand-drawn map, scratched notes in the margins. "Problem is, it's not free ground. Somebody controls access.""Who.""Guy named Tobias Nkemelu. Goes by Cutter. Sits at seven on the Leaderboard. Runs the encounter like a toll booth, charges supplies or favors to let people in.""Vanguard?""No. Independent. Which means he's not obligated to help us and not obligated to stop us either. He just wants to get paid."Dax ru
Chapter Five: Thirty Seconds
"Down!"Dax didn't wait to see if Wren listened. He grabbed her shoulder and shoved, hard, sending her sideways into Priya just as the thing came off the ramp.It moved wrong. Four legs, too many joints in each one, skin stretched tight and gray like something left too long underwater. No eyes that Dax could find, just a wide mouth lined in teeth that didn't match each other, some too long, some barely there. A Tier 2 capped spawn, according to Cutter. It didn't look capped. It looked like it wanted to prove the number wrong. It hit Dax before he finished raising his arms. The impact folded him backward into the concrete wall, air punched clean out of his chest, teeth finding his shoulder before he got a hand between himself and the mouth. Pain arrived a half second late, sharp and total, the kind that made the whole world narrow down to one point of contact. His HUD lit up fast.[Damage Taken: 47][Attrition Tank Effect Triggered][+3 STR / +2 CON][Buffer Threshold Reached — Retalia
Chapter Six: Classification
"Is she breathing? Somebody tell me she's breathing.""She's breathing." Priya had two fingers pressed to Wren's throat, counting. "Pulse is fast but steady. This is normal. I've seen triggers before, this is what they look like."Dax didn't loosen his grip on her anyway. Wren lay half in his lap, half on the cracked concrete, eyes moving fast under closed lids, whole body twitching every few seconds like she was fighting something in a dream nobody else could see."How long does it usually take?" he asked."Depends on the Class. Simple ones, a minute. Complicated ones—" Priya shrugged. "I watched a guy stay under for almost ten minutes once. Woke up fine. Just took the System a while to sort him."Cutter came down the ramp at an easy pace, hands in his pockets, studying Wren with open curiosity now instead of the bored distance from before."That was a strange spike," he said. "I've run maybe forty of these encounters. Never seen a trigger read that fast right at the edge of the wind
Chapter Seven: What the Board Doesn't Show
"You're not sleeping. I can hear you not sleeping from over here."Dax opened his eyes. Priya sat across the pharmacy floor, tablet glowing faint blue against her face, Ray still out cold in the corner and Wren curled up near the door with her new Class settling into her like a low hum Dax could almost feel from a few feet away."Just thinking," he said."About the word.""About the word."Priya set the tablet down, rubbing at her eyes. She'd been at it for hours, digging through every scrap of System data she'd scavenged off dead HUDs and cracked terminals since the Reset, cross-referencing notification logs, hunting for a single match to the term that had come through Wren's trigger."Nothing," she said. "Not one hit. I've got logs from forty-some players, going back months. Harvest doesn't appear anywhere. Not in Class notifications, not in Zone alerts, not in the System's public documentation, which barely exists anyway.""So it's rare.""So it's either brand new, or it's never me
Chapter Eight: Signatures
"Back door. Now. Don't argue with me."Dax already had Ray's arm over his shoulder, half-carrying him toward the pharmacy's rear exit while Priya grabbed what supplies she could stuff into a bag in under ten seconds. Wren stood frozen a moment longer, eyes distant, reading something in the air none of the rest of them could see."Wren. Move.""They're not coming straight at us," she said, voice tight with concentration. "Two of the small signatures split off. Going around the block instead. Like they're trying to cut off the back.""Then we go out the side." Dax adjusted his grip on Ray, who bit back a groan and nodded once, jaw set. "How far's the third one?""Close. Really close." Wren's eyes snapped open, panic flickering through the focus for just a second. "It's already at the corner."The pharmacy's side door burst inward before anyone reached it.A Vanguard soldier filled the frame, armor plated in the same faint blue as Marcus's had been, though the level number floating above
Chapter Nine: Standing Still
"Nobody move. Not you, not them, not me. Just stand still a minute."Marcus said it quiet, almost gentle, hands open at his sides like he'd walked into a room instead of cornered four people in an alley. Behind Dax, Wren had gone rigid, crowbar still raised, and Priya kept one arm braced across Ray to hold him steady on his bad leg."You've got a strange way of showing up unannounced," Dax said, keeping himself squarely between Marcus and the others."I don't do announced anymore. Costs too much time." Marcus's eyes moved past Dax, taking in Wren, then Priya, then Ray's leg, cataloguing all of it fast and quiet the way he used to catalogue a battlefield before deciding where to move his people. "Your search team roughed up my medic. That wasn't supposed to happen.""Funny. They said you told them not to engage.""I did." Something flickered across Marcus's face, brief and hard to read. "Doesn't mean they listen well under pressure. New recruits panic. I'll deal with it.""Deal with it
Chapter Ten: Two Days
"You're actually going to trust him.""I'm not trusting him. I'm using what he gave us." Dax knelt by Ray's leg, checking the stitches Priya had put in two days ago, the wound holding better than expected given everything since. "Those aren't the same thing."Priya paced the length of the pharmacy's back room, arms crossed, tablet forgotten on the counter for once. "He runs purges, Dax. He's the reason half of Zone 3 doesn't exist as a functioning population anymore. And you're ready to walk four Zones on his word alone.""I'm ready to walk four Zones because the alternative is sitting here waiting to find out what Harvest Eligible actually means the hard way." Dax stood, rolling his shoulder where the bite wound from Zone 2 had mostly healed into a dull ache. "You said it yourself. Two people flagged, both gone within a week. We don't have the luxury of skepticism right now.""I'm not saying don't go. I'm saying don't hand him your trust for free. Men like that don't hand out warning
