"Down!"

Dax didn't wait to see if Wren listened. He grabbed her shoulder and shoved, hard, sending her sideways into Priya just as the thing came off the ramp.

It moved wrong. Four legs, too many joints in each one, skin stretched tight and gray like something left too long underwater. No eyes that Dax could find, just a wide mouth lined in teeth that didn't match each other, some too long, some barely there. A Tier 2 capped spawn, according to Cutter. It didn't look capped. It looked like it wanted to prove the number wrong.

It hit Dax before he finished raising his arms.

The impact folded him backward into the concrete wall, air punched clean out of his chest, teeth finding his shoulder before he got a hand between himself and the mouth. Pain arrived a half second late, sharp and total, the kind that made the whole world narrow down to one point of contact.

His HUD lit up fast.

He didn't think about the notification. His body already knew what to do with it, muscle suddenly heavier with new weight, the ache in his shoulder dulling just enough to work with. He drove his free hand up into the thing's jaw and shoved, hard enough to buy himself half a second.

Half a second was enough.

"Cutter!" Priya shouted, dragging Wren further back. "You said Tier 2!"

"It is Tier 2!" Cutter called from the top of the ramp, not moving to help, arms crossed like he was watching a show he'd already seen the ending of. "Capped spawn just means the level's capped. Doesn't mean it fights nice."

"That's a hell of a distinction to leave out!"

"Didn't think I needed to explain that monsters bite. Figured that part was obvious."

Dax didn't have the breath to argue the point himself. The creature reset, snapping again, and this time he let it hit him.

It wasn't strategy so much as math he trusted more than his own reflexes. Attrition Tank didn't reward dodging. It rewarded surviving contact and coming out the other side heavier, tougher, harder to put down. Every hit he took now was a hit that made the next one easier to take. Everyone else on the Grid thought that made him reckless.

It made him exactly what the fight needed.

The jaws closed on his forearm this time, and he felt something crack, distant and strange, wrapped in a numbness that hadn't been there a minute ago.

[Retaliation Window: ACTIVE]

He swung his free fist into the side of its skull, and for the first time the creature actually staggered, one of its too-many legs buckling under it.

"Now!" Dax shouted. "Priya, get her closer, not further! Trigger window opens when she's in range, not hiding behind a car!"

"That's insane—"

"It's the job! Do it!"

Priya swore, loud and creative, and shoved Wren forward instead of back, staying close enough to grab her if things went wrong. Wren stumbled into range with the crowbar raised, face pale but steady, exactly the way Dax had trained her.

The creature's head swung toward the new target the instant it sensed her, some instinct in it recognizing weaker prey the way predators always did, System-born or not.

"Wren, left leg, joint's soft there, hit it!"

She swung without hesitating, crowbar connecting with a wet crack, and the creature shrieked, high and awful, staggering sideways into the wall.

Dax's HUD flickered again, faster this time, a second notification stacking on top of the first.

[Trigger Condition Detected — Nearby Unranked Combatant]

[Threshold: 60% — Rising]

"It's working," Priya breathed. "Wren, keep pressure on it, don't let it reset—"

The creature reared back, gathering itself for something bigger, muscles bunching along its too-long spine, and Dax recognized the tell from a dozen worse fights than this one.

"It's about to charge full weight," he said. "Everybody down, now—"

He didn't finish the sentence before it launched.

He threw himself in front of Wren without deciding to, old instinct doing the work faster than thought, and took the full weight of the charge across his chest and shoulder, the impact driving him off his feet entirely, concrete meeting his back hard enough to steal the air from his lungs a second time.

Something changed in his chest, sharp and electric, pain burning off into something closer to clarity. He'd never taken a hit that big before. The System apparently had opinions about what came next.

He surged up off the concrete faster than his body should've allowed, grabbed the creature by whatever passed for its throat, and slammed it down hard enough to crack the floor beneath it.

It didn't get back up.

[Spawn Eliminated]

[Trigger Window: 30 Seconds Remaining]

Silence rushed in where the fight had been, broken only by Dax's own ragged breathing and Wren staring down at her hands, at the crowbar still clutched in white knuckles, waiting for something to happen that hadn't happened yet.

"Ten seconds," Priya said quietly, watching Wren's blank HUD the way everyone watched a countdown they couldn't control. "Come on. Come on."

Wren's breath caught. Her eyes went wide, fixed on something none of the rest of them could see.

"Something's happening," she whispered.

The air around her seemed to bend, just slightly, light catching strange along her outline, and from the top of the ramp Cutter's easy grin finally slipped into something closer to real attention.

"Well," he said softly. "Wasn't expecting that particular notification."

Wren's knees buckled, and Dax caught her before she hit the ground, her whole body gone rigid, eyes rolled back, the trigger event finally, finally arriving three seconds before the window would have closed for good.

"Tell me you felt that.""I felt it." Dax planted his boots wider, the street beneath them trembling faintly, a low groan rolling up through the concrete like something enormous shifting its weight far below. "Everyone stay still a second."They'd left Coral an hour back, her directions solid so far, cutting a path well clear of the worst of the boundary drift. The tremor now felt different from the usual gravity quirks the Grid threw at them daily. Deeper. Wronger.Wren's eyes had gone distant, Warden senses stretching out across the street, and her face paled fast."The ground's not stable here either," she said. "Coral said this stretch was clear.""Maybe it was, an hour ago," Priya said, checking her tablet with a frown. "She said the boundary's been drifting fast. Maybe it caught up to this stretch since she last walked it."Another tremor rolled through, stronger this time, a section of sidewalk a dozen feet ahead buckling upward like something underneath had pushed against it a

  • Chapter Eleven: The Long Way Around

"Something's wrong with the ground up ahead. Don't step past that cracked line."Wren said it low, one hand raised, the whole group stopping behind her without needing further explanation. Three days of walking had taught Dax to trust her Warden senses the same way he used to trust a scout's read on unfamiliar terrain, fast and without argument."How wrong," he asked."Gravity's doing something there. Feels heavier than it should, like standing too close pulls at you." She squinted into the dark ahead, the road curving out of sight around a collapsed overpass. "I think it's a Zone boundary. We must be closer to the Zone 3 edge than the map said."Priya checked her tablet, frowning at the screen. "Should still be a mile off. Boundaries have been drifting though. Not supposed to happen, but nothing about the Grid does what it's supposed to do anymore."They'd left the pharmacy two nights back, moving mostly after dark to avoid Vanguard patrol schedules, resting in short stretches during

  • Chapter Ten: Two Days

"You're actually going to trust him.""I'm not trusting him. I'm using what he gave us." Dax knelt by Ray's leg, checking the stitches Priya had put in two days ago, the wound holding better than expected given everything since. "Those aren't the same thing."Priya paced the length of the pharmacy's back room, arms crossed, tablet forgotten on the counter for once. "He runs purges, Dax. He's the reason half of Zone 3 doesn't exist as a functioning population anymore. And you're ready to walk four Zones on his word alone.""I'm ready to walk four Zones because the alternative is sitting here waiting to find out what Harvest Eligible actually means the hard way." Dax stood, rolling his shoulder where the bite wound from Zone 2 had mostly healed into a dull ache. "You said it yourself. Two people flagged, both gone within a week. We don't have the luxury of skepticism right now.""I'm not saying don't go. I'm saying don't hand him your trust for free. Men like that don't hand out warning

  • Chapter Nine: Standing Still

"Nobody move. Not you, not them, not me. Just stand still a minute."Marcus said it quiet, almost gentle, hands open at his sides like he'd walked into a room instead of cornered four people in an alley. Behind Dax, Wren had gone rigid, crowbar still raised, and Priya kept one arm braced across Ray to hold him steady on his bad leg."You've got a strange way of showing up unannounced," Dax said, keeping himself squarely between Marcus and the others."I don't do announced anymore. Costs too much time." Marcus's eyes moved past Dax, taking in Wren, then Priya, then Ray's leg, cataloguing all of it fast and quiet the way he used to catalogue a battlefield before deciding where to move his people. "Your search team roughed up my medic. That wasn't supposed to happen.""Funny. They said you told them not to engage.""I did." Something flickered across Marcus's face, brief and hard to read. "Doesn't mean they listen well under pressure. New recruits panic. I'll deal with it.""Deal with it

  • Chapter Eight: Signatures

"Back door. Now. Don't argue with me."Dax already had Ray's arm over his shoulder, half-carrying him toward the pharmacy's rear exit while Priya grabbed what supplies she could stuff into a bag in under ten seconds. Wren stood frozen a moment longer, eyes distant, reading something in the air none of the rest of them could see."Wren. Move.""They're not coming straight at us," she said, voice tight with concentration. "Two of the small signatures split off. Going around the block instead. Like they're trying to cut off the back.""Then we go out the side." Dax adjusted his grip on Ray, who bit back a groan and nodded once, jaw set. "How far's the third one?""Close. Really close." Wren's eyes snapped open, panic flickering through the focus for just a second. "It's already at the corner."The pharmacy's side door burst inward before anyone reached it.A Vanguard soldier filled the frame, armor plated in the same faint blue as Marcus's had been, though the level number floating above

  • Chapter Seven: What the Board Doesn't Show

"You're not sleeping. I can hear you not sleeping from over here."Dax opened his eyes. Priya sat across the pharmacy floor, tablet glowing faint blue against her face, Ray still out cold in the corner and Wren curled up near the door with her new Class settling into her like a low hum Dax could almost feel from a few feet away."Just thinking," he said."About the word.""About the word."Priya set the tablet down, rubbing at her eyes. She'd been at it for hours, digging through every scrap of System data she'd scavenged off dead HUDs and cracked terminals since the Reset, cross-referencing notification logs, hunting for a single match to the term that had come through Wren's trigger."Nothing," she said. "Not one hit. I've got logs from forty-some players, going back months. Harvest doesn't appear anywhere. Not in Class notifications, not in Zone alerts, not in the System's public documentation, which barely exists anyway.""So it's rare.""So it's either brand new, or it's never me
