Chapter one
The cave trembled violently. Rocks tumbled down in a chaotic rush.Vandal, his fiancée Sandra, his best friend Darius, and his business partner Harland ran, dodging debris. At one point Vandal realized the ceiling was on the verge of collapsing. There was no time for rational thought. Acting purely on instinct, he pushed Sandra toward Darius just as they neared the exit."Get out quickly!" Vandal shouted. For a split second their eyes met. Something in her gaze felt off, cold, almost relieved. The thought flickered and vanished under the roar of collapsing stone. Then the ceiling gave way. Massive slabs crashed onto his shoulders, back, and legs. Bones snapped. He screamed as he fell. Heavy rocks buried him in seconds. Blood filled his mouth. From somewhere beyond the rubble he heard voices."Darius! Is he..." Sandra's voice cracked with terror."Yes, Sandra, I am certain he is more than dead, buried six feet under," Darius replied, calm as ever."I... he was not meant to die. This
Chapter two
But this thing was wrong, horribly wrong. Skin hung in bloody ribbons, hollow sockets leaking black ichor, mouth stretched in a scream layered with a thousand dying children’s voices. “Mother… why did you carve out my Echo while I still screamed?” It lunged, spectral claws raking across Elizabeth’s chest. Real flesh parted. Indigo essence sprayed in hot, hissing arcs.Behind it rose a second horror: a younger Elizabeth, knife trembling, standing over the grave she had wept at years ago. The phantom laughed with wet, maniacal glee and drove the blade into her own chest again and again. Black blood sprayed in burning arcs that sizzled against the real woman’s skin. “You wanted to wear their skin,” the phantom hissed between gurgles. “You wanted to devour your own children to ascend. Look at what you became!”“Get out of my head!” Elizabeth shrieked, blood streaming from her eyes and nose like tears of tar. The phantom’s jaws were locked around her throat, gnawing viciously while the ey

After what seemed like hours, he was finally satisfied. He had gone deep enough into the forest that the mountain was now only a tiny speck on the horizon.Suddenly, a piercing screech split the air. A bone-mouthed bear the size of a small building tore into a wolf with terrifying ease. The wolf had been second-stage resonance. Vandal somehow knew that now.His expression turned solemn. More fragments of Elizabeth’s stolen knowledge bubbled up, twisting his stomach. He still didn’t fully understand them, but he could vaguely sense the resonance radiating from the animals. The bear’s power dwarfed the wolf’s. It felt like third-stage resonance at least. The realization unsettled him deeply. How could he just know these things?,His stomach growled loudly. The hunger felt sharper than fear for a moment. Fighting instincts he didn’t recognize flared to life.Claws lengthened from his small fingers with a sickening wet sound. He clutched the viper fang tightly in his other hand. The ease
Chapter four
Thick iroko trees formed a huge umbrella above a small river, beside which was a giant lizard drinking water, carrying several bags.Fifteen tall dark warriors were dining around a camp fire near the giant lizard. Behind the lizard, a group of thin, malnourished men and one female child were crouching, having a quiet meal, there was nothing much in the bowl, just beans, their eyes dim.In a chair made of timber, a fat old man was sitting motionlessly. He was wearing a dark blue robe embroidered with seven white clouds on his back, eyes constantly staring at the chained people, his gaze carried viciousness.“Eat fast! I have places to be!”The female child stared back in defiance, determination in her poise, suddenly she hurled the bowl of cold beans at the man and turned to run in the opposite direction towards the small river. However the man only smiled as he watched her make a run for it.Suddenly he waved his two fingers in a lazy way and a strand of water twisted into a glowing w
Chapter five
“Nooooo, my precious test subject!” Kennedy’s scream tore through the air, raw with desperation.A shimmering water whip lashed out in the nick of time, snatching Vandal out of the flame’s path and flinging him away from the explosion.Flames splashed on some slaves and bandits alike. An unfortunate slave was screaming in agony as the flames licked his flesh off his bones and melted the chains that bound him. In that same breath, a frail girl took off with her ankle shackles suddenly loose, sprinting desperately toward the bush ahead.Kennedy was already huffing and puffing, a stream of blood running down from the corner of his mouth. “Damn it… the backlash…” he muttered, gritting his teeth, his chest heaving from the failed water drill that had cost him too much resonance energy.“Leave with your men… and I won’t kill you all. The boy is mine.”Kennedy’s eyes shone with anger. “Never! I am a member of the Seven Clouds Clan; we always pay back in blood!”He immediately took out a vial
Chapter six
“What do I do? How do I avoid drinking this?” he thought to himself inwardly, but in reality, he was talking to that entity in his eye, hoping it would give him a useful answer, but none came. The smell was revolting; it had the scent of rotten fish. He really felt like he would die if he drank this liquid.Kennedy clapped his hands and answered Vandal’s unspoken fears. “Mawrot Essence is my personal creation. It’s lots of fun. You are going to do whatever I say while you decay from the inside until you vomit your brain and die.”“Why should I drink this?” Vandal finally asked.“Well, if you drink it, you will die later… but if you don’t… you will die now,” Kennedy replied slowly.Vandal hesitated. After all his self-promises to become stronger, he was going to die like this? Used and killed by a strange poison?“What’s wrong? Huh? You will be super strong, I promise you. With your rich reserves of resonance energy and your sturdy, healthy body, you will be very useful to me in a lot
Chapter seven
Vandal was stunned.Delicious…“Huh??”He could feel his eye actively feeding on the Mawrot essence, growing stronger with every drop. Something that was meant to kill him was instead nourishing the entity inside his eye. In his mind, he saw it clearly: a black hole surrounded by swirling darkness.Moreee…The black hole vibrated greedily as it devoured the sickly goo that was supposed to rot Vandal from the inside out.“Who are you?” Vandal asked the black hole, but received no reply.“I guess I’ll take this opportunity to observe the changes in my body then.”Vandal had no idea how he was even able to be here, in this strange inner space connected to his eye. But the moment he tried to visualize the inside of his body, a shocking scene appeared before him.“My cells… they’re full of life. The rotten flesh is recovering automatically…”Vandal felt a surge of ecstasy, yet his physical face remained calm and serene, as peaceful as a still lake, as if he were deep in sleep.---“That ba

Vandal’s thoughts flashed back to the moment he had crossed eyes with that innocent-looking child who seemed to be his age mate. Her eyes were so clear, and she had a lot of fighting spirit in her demeanor.“That was the girl these bastards locked in a cage full of poop.” That memory made him retch in disgust. He could still remember the stench, and he could only imagine how she had managed to withstand it during her time of punishment.“Damn it, I can’t allow him to give her the Mawrot essence. She would certainly die — a very painful death.” His mind frantically searched for a way out of this predicament, a way to prevent her from taking the Mawrot poison. After a while, Emeka returned.“Boss, I think she has escaped. I can’t find her. She might have escaped somehow during the commotion when we got attacked.”Vandal breathed a sigh of relief. *Good girl. She was able to escape. That’s very good.*“Fine, I will organise a search party to bring her here. She can’t have gone far. She
Chapter nine
The sound of a knife cutting through the earth approached. Soon, they saw three black-glass spiders. Each stood as tall as a fully grown adult human. Their bodies were inky black and as large as a bus, with eight legs like lengthy daggers , glistening and razor-sharp.“Protect Elder Kennedy!” a clansman shouted. He and his squad of three leapt into the air.*Keeeeeegh!*The spiders shrieked. They were not stupid. Instead of waiting for the humans to land, they instantly shot forth silky webs. Two of the men were caught in the air before they could even attack. In the same instant, two more spiders rushed toward the trapped warriors. Black bladed legs rose high into the sky and came down swiftly, piercing their heads before they could scream. The remaining warriors thrust their weapons while deflecting the spiders’ attacks, aiming for the beasts’ waists and eyes. One warrior sustained a deep cut across his torso from a spider leg. His organs spilled out as he cried out desperately befo
Chapter ten
“I can’t let you stop me!”Vandal’s face turned ice-cold. A ferocious strength surged from deep within him as a glowing Echo Mark flared to life in his body. Instantly, his internal organs rapidly shifted and strengthened, transforming into those of a bone-mouthed bear.He pushed all thoughts of his internal changes aside and channeled every bit of his resonance energy into his fists.Stamping his foot hard into the ground, he anchored himself.BAM!Faruk’s heavy fist slammed into his face with brutal force. Vandal’s nose broke with a sickening crunch, but he didn’t budge. His feet dug deeper into the dirt as he absorbed the blow. A sharp, electric pain exploded across his face, his nose swelling instantly and throbbing with intense tenderness. In the same breath, his small but empowered fist shot forward like a cannonball, smashing straight into Faruk’s stomach.CRACK!A sickening bone-crushing sound rang out.“Gaaahhh!” Faruk’s eyes bulged in shock and agony as the air was violently
