Chapter 1: The Final BellThe static on the radio wasn’t just white noise anymore; it was a rhythmic, frantic scream. Drovian tightened his grip on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned a ghostly shade of white. Through the windshield, the mid-afternoon sun hung heavy over the suburbs, but the streets were beginning to warp into something unrecognizable. People were sprinting in the opposite direction of the school, their faces masks of sheer terror.Drovian glanced at the rearview mirror. Thirty-two kids, ranging from seventh to tenth grade, were currently oblivious to the apocalypse unfolding just a few blocks away. He reached out and clicked the lock mechanism for the passenger door. The heavy thunk echoed through the quiet cabin."Hey, Mr. D! Why’d you lock the door? I forgot my bag at the locker," a girl named Sarah called out from the third row."Sit down, Sarah. Keep your seatbelt on," Drovian said, his voice clipped, betraying none of the cold sweat soaking his shirt."

Chapter 3: The Mechanic's MirageThe bus didn't give a dramatic shudder before it quit; it simply sighed. The engine’s roar, which had been a constant, grinding rhythm for the last fifty miles, smoothed out into a pathetic, wheezing hum, and then—silence. The vehicle coasted, the tires dragging heavily over the sun-baked asphalt until the yellow frame came to a shuddering halt in the middle of a vast, featureless desert.Drovian stared at the dead instrument panel. The silence from the engine room was amplified by the sudden, terrifying lack of movement."Mr. D? We’re stopped. Why are we stopped?" Sarah’s voice trembled from the back, near the makeshift infirmary where Leo lay, his skin the color of curdled milk.Drovian didn't turn around. He couldn't. His hands were fused to the steering wheel, his knuckles aching with the effort of holding onto reality. "Veylor. Tell me. Is it the fuel line again?"Veylor crawled forward from the engine hatch, his hair standing up in greasy tufts,

Chapter 5: Inventory ManagementThe silence of the forest was a heavy, suffocating blanket after the frantic screeching of the desert. Drovian pulled the bus off the narrow, winding asphalt and into a dense thicket of pines, the engine finally dying with a long, drawn-out wheeze. He slumped forward, his forehead resting against the cool, vibration-less steering wheel."Alright, everyone. Power down. Eyes shut for a few," Drovian whispered, his voice cracking."Mr. D? We’re stopping here?" Osvan stood up from the middle rows, his brow furrowed behind thick-rimmed glasses. He clutched a spiral notebook like a shield. "We need an assessment. Right now. We’re burning daylight and luck.""Give us five, Osvan," Jax muttered from the back, his head lolling against the window. "My brain feels like it’s been put through a blender.""We don't have five," Osvan snapped, his voice sharp and clinical. "We have the remainder of our resources, which are currently uncounted and dangerously low. If we

Chapter 7: The Student at the WheelThe silence left behind in the wake of the retreating bus was more deafening than the gunfire. Drovian lay in the dirt, the jagged gravel biting into his cheek. Above him, the moon was a cold, indifferent witness to his unraveling. His breath came in ragged, wet hitches, each one feeling like glass shards in his chest."Mr. D? Mr. D, get up! Please, you have to get up!"The voice belonged to someone nearby, but it sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well. Drovian tried to turn his head, but his muscles felt like frayed wires."Don't leave him, Jax! Grab his legs!""I’ve got him! Watch the shoulder—don't press on the hole!"Strong, trembling hands hoisted Drovian from the ground. The world spun into a nauseating blur of black and grey as they dragged him. He felt the cold steel of the bus’s floor beneath him, the heavy thud of the emergency door slamming shut, and then the sickening lurch of the vehicle."Othrik, go! Floor it! They’re sti

Chapter 9: The Lure of the Azure MistThe interior of the "Iron Lung" smelled of ozone, burnt rubber, and the metallic tang of Drovian’s dried blood. It was a confined, suffocating space, a steel ribcage holding what remained of their fragile lives together. Drovian lay across the rearmost seats, his body a map of trauma, every shallow breath he took a gamble against the agony radiating from his gut. His eyes were half-lidded, fixed on the ceiling’s rusted rivets, while his mind drifted through the hazy, disjointed architecture of pain and memory.Othrik sat behind the steering wheel, though the bus had not moved for hours. His knuckles were white, his grip so tight that the leather wrap of the wheel groaned under the pressure. He was terrified to move, terrified to shift the gears, and terrified to keep the engine idling. Yet, the blue mist—a byproduct of the scavenged chemical additive they were forced to use—continued to bleed from the tailpipe in thick, lazy plumes that clung to t
