Chapter 6: The Name on the File

The folder felt like a lead weight in Drovian’s hands, the paper stock unnaturally thick, as if it had been reinforced to hold the gravity of his own hidden history. He stared at the photograph of his younger self, standing outside the school months before the sky ignited. The date stamp in the corner was precise.

"They were watching you before the sky turned?" Jax asked, his voice a brittle rasp in the cold night air. "Mr. D, how? Why?"

Drovian didn't answer. He tucked the folder into his jacket, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Don't say a word to the others. Not a single word, you hear me? If they find out I’m the reason we’re being hunted, they’ll break."

"But it’s not your fault," Caedrik said, shifting his weight. "You didn't know."

"I don't know anything, Caedrik. That’s the problem," Drovian replied, his tone icy. "We need the fuel. Get the siphon hose from the rack. Move."

"Mr. D, wait," Jax whispered, grabbing Drovian’s arm. "If they have a file on you, what do they have on us? On the kids?"

"That’s exactly what I intend to find out," Drovian said, turning his back to the compound. "But first, we survive."

They moved with practiced, desperate speed, bleeding the fuel into their containers. When they returned to the bus, the air inside was thick with tension. Osvan was pacing the aisle, his eyes darting toward the woods every few seconds.

"You’re late," Osvan said, his voice clipped as they climbed aboard. "I was about to assume the worst. Did you get it?"

"We got it," Drovian said, sliding into the driver’s seat. He looked at Veylor, who was watching him with a strange, searching expression.

"Everything okay, Mr. D?" Veylor asked, wiping his oily hands on a rag. "You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

"Just tired, Veylor. Just tired," Drovian said, his eyes scanning the gauges. "Osvan, get everyone ready. We’re moving out in five."

"You found something out there, didn't you?" Qevran stepped forward from the shadows of the third row. He looked pale, his eyes rimmed with red. "You’re hiding something. We can feel it, Mr. D. The whole bus feels different."

"Qevran, sit down," Drovian commanded, his voice tight. "I’m not in the mood for an interrogation."

"We’re not kids anymore, Drovian!" Qevran shouted, stepping into the aisle. "You treat us like cargo, like we’re just supplies you’re hauling across a desert, but we’re the ones bleeding! We’re the ones watching our friends turn into those things! You owe us the truth!"

"I owe you protection," Drovian snapped, standing up. The entire bus went silent. "I owe you a way out. If you want the truth, the truth is that we’re all targets. The world didn't just end by accident. It was stripped for parts, and we’re the only ones left who don't know the game."

"What game?" Sarah whispered from the back, her voice trembling.

"A game that started long before the smoke," Drovian said, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. He saw it then—a pair of high-intensity beams cutting through the trees behind them. "Get down! Everyone, get down!"

The bus jolted as a heavy, armored vehicle slammed into the rear bumper. The impact sent chairs skidding and kids screaming.

"They’re here!" Jax yelled, diving for the bolt gun.

"Veylor, start it! Now!" Drovian roared, slamming his foot on the brake as the bus tipped toward the embankment.

The engine sputtered, then caught with that familiar, terrifying whine of blue lightning. The bus surged forward, tearing through a line of pine trees like they were brittle toothpicks.

"They’re signaling us!" Osvan cried, pointing out the back window. "There are more of them coming from the north!"

A voice boomed through a loudspeaker, cold and synthesized. "Halt the vehicle. Surrender the specimens. Compliance will result in minimal physical trauma. Non-compliance is terminal."

"Specimens?" Qevran gasped, grabbing the back of Drovian’s seat. "Are they talking about us?"

"They’re talking about us," Drovian said, his knuckles white as he wrestled with the steering wheel. "Veylor, give me everything you’ve got!"

"The manifold is going to blow, Mr. D!" Veylor screamed from the floor. "The temperature is hitting red! We’re going to melt the whole chassis!"

"Then let it melt!" Drovian barked. "Just keep us moving!"

A volley of gunfire rattled against the metal siding of the bus. Glass shattered, and a bullet grazed the frame of the windshield, showering Drovian in shards. He didn't blink. He swerved the bus into a narrow ravine, the vehicle groaning under the strain of the steep descent.

"Mr. D, look out!" Caedrik shouted.

A block of concrete, dropped by a helicopter hovering silently above, crashed into the path ahead, blocking the route. Drovian slammed on the brakes, the bus skidding sideways, tires burning with that unnatural blue glow.

"We’re trapped!" Sarah sobbed.

"Jax, move to the rear hatch!" Drovian yelled. "Caedrik, you take the side! We aren't going to just sit here and be captured!"

"What are you going to do?" Qevran asked, his voice shaking.

"I’m going to draw their fire," Drovian said, pulling the folder from his jacket and tossing it to Qevran. "If I don't make it back, you get this to the coast. Do you understand?"

"Mr. D, no!" Qevran yelled, reaching for him.

Drovian didn't listen. He kicked the emergency door open, the sound of gunfire instantly deafening. He vaulted out into the brush, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He had to lead them away from the bus, away from the kids who were, for some reason he couldn't yet fathom, the most valuable things on the planet.

"Over here!" Drovian shouted, sprinting toward a rocky outcrop.

The soldiers, clad in matte-black tactical gear that seemed to swallow the light, tracked his movement with precise, mechanical efficiency. He ducked behind a boulder as a hail of bullets chipped away at the stone.

"Subject identified," one of the soldiers spoke, his voice modulated and devoid of humanity. "Lethal force authorized for the driver only. Keep the others intact."

Drovian grit his teeth, his hand gripping a flare he’d pulled from the emergency kit. "Intact, huh? Not if I have a say in it."

He threw the flare toward the armored vehicle they had arrived in. As the red light arched through the air, he lunged from cover, bolt gun raised. He fired once, twice, hitting the lead soldier in the chest plate. The soldier stumbled, but the armor held.

Then, a sharp, searing pain exploded in Drovian’s shoulder. He spun, his vision blurring, and fell hard onto the jagged gravel.

"Drovian!"

The scream came from the bus. Qevran had jumped out, his face twisted in horror.

"Get back in the bus!" Drovian roared, his voice thick with blood. He tried to stand, but his legs wouldn't obey.

A soldier stepped forward, his rifle aimed directly at Drovian’s head. "Subject Drovian. Termination sequence initiated."

Before the soldier could squeeze the trigger, a roar erupted from the bus—a sound of pure, mechanical rage. The vehicle didn't just sit there; it lunged forward, the blue mist from the exhaust acting like a blinding shield. It slammed into the armored truck, flipping it onto its side.

"Qevran, get back!" Drovian screamed, but it was too late.

The bus swerved, and Qevran leaped, grabbing the handle of the door, hauling himself up into the driver's seat. He looked at Drovian for one heartbeat, his eyes wide with a terrifying resolve, before he slammed the bus into gear.

The bus tore away into the darkness, leaving Drovian behind in the dirt. He watched the tail lights fade into the night, the blue glow of the exhaust the last thing he saw. He slumped back against the rock, his breathing shallow, his vision fading to black. He had done it. He had gotten them away. But as the sound of the soldiers' boots grew louder, his last thought wasn't of his own life, but of the folder in Qevran’s hands, and the secret that was now hurtling toward the edge of the world.

Please, you have to get up!"The voice belonged to someone nearby, but it sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well. Drovian tried to turn his head, but his muscles felt like frayed wires."Don't leave him, Jax! Grab his legs!""I’ve got him! Watch the shoulder—don't press on the hole!"Strong, trembling hands hoisted Drovian from the ground. The world spun into a nauseating blur of black and grey as they dragged him.
