CHAPTER 1
Derek Moss had walked into burning buildings two hundred and thirty seven times. He had never once hesitated at the door. Tonight was no different. The east wing of the Grandview Hotel was fully engulfed in flames. Black smoke poured from the third floor windows while bright fire crawled behind the glass. Guests fled past him, coughing and clinging to one another in pure terror."Dispatch to Engine forty two. We have two confirmed victims trapped in Suite three one eight. Do you copy?" The radio crackled loudly in his ear."Engine forty two copy. I am on my way up right now," Derek replied with a calm and steady voice. He pulled down his mask, checked his air tank, and went inside. He took the stairs two at a time, keeping one hand on the rail and the other gripping his heavy metal bar. The smoke thickened with every single floor. By the second landing, it had become a solid gray wall. By the third floor, it was nearly pitch black. He dropped low, moving fast on pure instinct and heav
CHAPTER 1, PART 2
They had barely reached the middle of the second floor stairwell when a deafening roar erupted without any warning. A violent pressure wave tore through the narrow stairwell, completely knocking the air from Derek lungs. The ceiling was coming down.Derek reacted entirely on instinct. His body moved long before his mind did. He spun around, threw himself over Erin, and curled tight as the massive wooden beam crashed down.It caught him directly across his left leg.The pain was white hot and total. He heard himself grunt loudly. It was the heavy sound of a man absorbing something enormous and actively choosing not to be stopped by it. He braced his palms against the hot floor, shoved the heavy beam sideways with everything he had left, and pulled his bleeding leg free.Erin lay completely unharmed beneath him, with gray dust tangled in her hair. Their eyes met. For a very brief moment, Derek thought he saw something soften in her eyes. Regret, or love, even."I am fine," Derek gritted
CHAPTER 2, PART 1
The very first thing Derek saw when he stepped into his home was the wine. Two crystal glasses filled with deep red wine sat directly on the expensive coffee table, catching the soft and warm light of the living room lamp. The second thing he saw was Mike. The young heir was sitting comfortably on the leather couch. He was wearing Derek pajamas. They were the old gray ones with the frayed left cuff. Erin had always complained heavily about those exact pajamas. She always said she would throw them away, but she never actually did. Now, her wealthy lover was wearing them proudly. The third thing he saw was his own wife.Erin was standing gracefully in front of the modern stove. She had a cheerful little apron covered in cartoon kittens tied neatly around her thin waist. She looked incredibly comfortable. She looked perfectly at home.Derek stood there quietly and felt a deep ache inside his chest. This was the exact same woman who had once written him a very lengthy email before they go
CHAPTER 2, PART 2
Derek looked at his wife. He really looked at her. He looked the exact way a person looks at a complicated puzzle when they are finally ready to see the full picture clearly. The absolute hypocrisy of the situation and the blatant double standards made his stomach turn. The theatrical acts made his dark gaze narrow and his facial expression darkened completely."So if he does it, it is absolutely nothing," Derek said with a bitter and hollow laugh. "But when I do the exact same thing, I am the worst man alive.""It is about pattern and intention," Erin argued with a dismissive wave of her wooden spoon."Tell me the truth, Erin," Derek demanded, stepping closer and fixing his tired eyes heavily on hers. The quiet words landed softly in the tense room. Erin stilled completely. She stopped stirring the food."Just tell me the truth," Derek said again, his voice cracking slightly with pure emotional exhaustion. "Do you really love me?"The heavy silence stretched loudly across the kitchen
CHAPTER 3, PART 1
The slap came before he even finished the word divorce. It was not a dramatic swing. It was just a sharp and highly efficient crack across his left cheek. Erin wore a heavy diamond ring. That expensive ring caught the corner of his mouth and left behind a sharp metallic sting."Do not," Erin whispered with a voice made of pure ice. "Do not you dare."He looked at her. For one foolish moment, a tiny trace of warmth crept into his broken heart. Maybe she still loved him deep down.Maybe this aggressive reaction meant she actually cared about saving their marriage. A quiet sigh of relief escaped his lips. But that brief warmth was quickly snuffed out by the very next thing she said as she opened her mouth."I have the Cambridge Ethics Forum in exactly three weeks," Erin stated, fixing her posture perfectly and smoothing her apron. "I am the keynote speaker for a major panel on modern family values. Do you have any idea what a messy divorce filing would do to that event? To the media cove
CHAPTER 3, PART 2
Derek crossed the large room in three fast strides. He drove his heavy fist directly into the handsome face of Mike. The forceful impact snapped the head of Mike backward and sent him stumbling hard against the arm of the couch. Mike clutched his jaw, his eyes wide with absolute shock."Do not," Derek warned quietly, standing over the younger man with a dark scowl. "Do not you dare."Mike straightened up clumsily. His face cycled rapidly through pale shades of red and white. "Derek, I just wanted to say...""If you really did not want to come between a husband and his wife," Derek interrupted, keeping his voice dangerously low, "you could have started by keeping yourself out of the wife. You absolute prick."Mike opened his mouth, and then closed it again very quickly. Whatever dramatic performance he had prepared had vanished completely, leaving him entirely speechless and deeply humiliated."What the hell is wrong with you?" Erin shouted loudly, rushing straight to the side of her l
Chapter 4, PART 1
"Derek, are you watching the news broadcast right now?" Brett asked with a highly urgent and tense voice."I am looking at the television screen as we speak," Derek answered with a very calm and steady expression. "The sky looks completely orange and black on the screen. It looks like the entire mountain range is being swallowed whole by the flames.""It is much worse than it looks on television," Brett explained with a dark and serious tone. "The wildfire in Los Vangees has spiraled completely out of control. The winds picked up an hour ago.""Where is it heading?" Derek questioned with a tight jaw and focused eyes."It is jumping multiple ridges without slowing down at all," Brett stated with a heavy sigh and a grim face. "It is spreading directly into the main residential areas and the luxury mountain resorts. Thousands of people are trapped.""Do we have any confirmed numbers yet?" Derek asked with a professional and ready posture."Casualties have already been reported by the loc
CHAPTER 4, PART 1
He pulled a simple green duffel bag from the top shelf of the closet. He packed absolutely everything that truly belonged to him in just eleven minutes. He folded his few remaining work shirts, his old jeans, and his basic toiletries.Looking around the massive house, Derek realized exactly how little of his daily life was actually his own. The expensive modern furniture belonged entirely to Erin. The fancy art decorations belonged to Erin. The huge comfortable bed belonged to Erin. He had just been a temporary guest in her perfect world. He took his metal house key off his key ring. He placed the shiny key gently on top of the wooden dresser, leaving it behind forever. He picked up his heavy bag, walked out of the front door, and stepped into the cool night air without looking back once.Derek drove his heavy truck through the empty city streets. The cool night air blew through his open window, but his chest felt completely hollow. He watched the streetlights pass by one by one. He a

The long and grueling drive to Los Vangees took six exhausting hours. The heavy fire engines rattled loudly as they navigated the winding mountain roads.Thick clouds of gray smoke rolled heavily across the asphalt, turning the dark night into a dusty and suffocating twilight.Derek sat quietly in the passenger seat of Engine forty two, staring blankly out the frost covered window. He felt an overwhelming sense of numbness, a strange and hollow peace that settled deep within his chest. When the convoy finally reached the primary command post at the edge of the county, the scene was absolute chaos.Bright red and blue emergency lights flashed frantically against towering walls of smoke and ash.Firefighters rushed back and forth, dragging heavy hoses and shouting urgent commands over the deafening roar of distant flames.Derek stepped down from the truck, his badly injured leg throbbing sharply with every step. He ignored the pain completely, squaring his shoulders as he joined his cre

"I copy, Chief. Go ahead," Derek replied loudly, wiping heavy sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand."The last convoy of nursing-home residents is moving through the pass right now, but their van is stuck in mud," Rodriguez reported, coughing heavily from the smoke. "You and your crew need to hold this eastern line for another fifteen minutes to give them time to get clear.""We will hold it," Derek promised firmly, his voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority. "Do not worry about us."The wall of fire closed in rapidly, turning the dark night sky into a terrifying shade of blood red. Sparks and burning embers rained down like a deadly storm."Fall back twenty yards!" Derek ordered his men with a sharp hand gesture, shouting over the deafening noise. "Keep the line steady!"The crew scrambled backward, fighting valiantly against the intense radiant heat and choking smoke. Derek knew he needed to assess the wider tactical picture before the fire comple
