CHAPTER 8, PART 2
Hot tears streamed down her flawless makeup. She was genuinely terrified. Not because she truly loved him anymore, but because a dead husband meant endless public scrutiny. It meant messy questions about their failing marriage and her dark secrets.Suddenly, her phone rang loudly in the cup holder.Erin gasped loudly. She grabbed the phone with shaking hands. She desperately hoped to see the name of Derek on the bright screen. The screen displayed the name of Mike.Erin let out a very long breath. She quickly wiped the tears from her wet cheeks. She forced herself to calm down completely."Hello," Erin answered with a very soft and hopeful voice, hoping he had some good news."Hey babe, where are you?" Mike asked with a lazy and highly relaxed tone through the phone speaker. "The huge house is totally empty."Erin completely hid everything from Mike. She did not tell him about the bodies. She did not tell him about the grieving families. She did not tell him about her terrible fear."
CHAPTER 8, PART 1
The drive to Los Vangees County took several long hours. Thick smoke filled the dark air. Erin parked her expensive car right outside the temporary command center. She walked quickly past the yellow barricades. The scene was an absolute nightmare. Large white tents filled the muddy field. Paramedics rushed around with heavy medical supplies."Excuse me," Erin said with a highly urgent voice, grabbing the arm of a passing volunteer. "Where are the men from Engine Seven?""I cannot help you with that right now," the young volunteer replied with an exhausted expression, pulling his arm away gently. "You need to wait at the family information tent over by the entrance.""I am not waiting in a crowded tent," Erin stated with a cold and commanding tone, crossing her arms over her chest. "I am the famous founder of the Firefighter Family Safety Foundation. My husband is Derek Moss. I need to know if he is alive.""We do not have a confirmed survivor list yet," the volunteer explained with a
CHAPTER 7, PART 3
"Communication lines have been completely down in that mountain area due to the heavy smoke and damaged cell towers," Kitty stated with a very serious and professional face. "Nobody has heard from any of the brave men on the front lines for days."Mike walked slowly into the living room holding a glass of clear water. He looked back and forth between the two tense women."Is everything okay in here?" Mike asked with a deeply confused and concerned tone."Everything is perfectly fine, sweetheart," Erin lied quickly with a very bright and sweet smile, turning around to face him. "Kitty is just giving me a very boring work update for the foundation. Go watch some television in the other room. I will be right there to sit with you.""Okay, babe," Mike agreed with a happy and completely clueless expression before walking away down the hall.As soon as Mike was gone, the bright smile on the face of Erin vanished completely. She turned back to Kitty with dark and angry eyes."What else did t

"I am very happy here with you," Mike purred with a deeply satisfied and arrogant face. "But what if he talks to the local press? It could completely ruin your big charity event next week.""I will never let anyone hurt our beautiful future together," Erin promised with a very firm and loving voice, stroking his cheek gently with her thumb. "I will handle Derek completely. I just need to find out exactly where he is hiding first."Erin kissed Mike softly on the cheek and got out of the large bed. She grabbed her silver phone from the wooden nightstand. Still no new messages. Still no missed phone calls. The cold fear in her chest grew much stronger. She quickly dialed the number of her personal assistant."Kitty, I need your help right now," Erin commanded with a very sharp and demanding voice as soon as the call connected."Good morning, boss. What do you need me to do?" Kitty asked with a highly professional and alert tone through the phone speaker."Derek has been gone for five day
CHAPTER 7, PART 1
The heavy front door opened with a very loud creak. Erin stood frozen in the bright hallway of her large house. Derek walked slowly inside. He wore his heavy yellow firefighter jacket. He looked completely safe and perfectly healthy."Where have you been for the last five days?" Erin asked with a highly annoyed and sharp voice, crossing her arms over her chest.Derek did not say a single word. He just stood there in the silent hallway. He slowly turned his head to look directly at her.The bright light above them flickered once. When the light returned, the face of Derek was completely gone. His skin melted away into thick black ash. A terribly burned and rotting skull stared directly at her from inside the yellow helmet.Erin screamed loudly with a completely terrified and breathless voice. She shot up in her large bed.
