Chapter 21
Kitty furrowed her brows, “What?" “What?" Elena repeated.Kitty rolled her eyes, "I thought you guys were waiting until Monday. Why rush it? A lot could go on between now and then. Tyler could change–”Elena cut in sharply with a frown, "Tyler won't change, K. Please, hammer this inward. Trust me, I've tried all I could, he didn't even bat an eye.”Kitty nodded with a sigh, "I-Is that so? Well, if you insist. But, don't be annoyed, are you absolutely sure about this?”"Absolutely,” Elena answered without hesitation."Okay, then,” Kitty rose up reluctantly and stretched her hands. “It should be ready before noon." “Thank you,” Elena simply nodded and penned down her signature on the first page of the open document before her, one out of hundreds. She sighed lazily, "I'll keep myself busy with this in the meantime.”Kitty waved and left the office.About an hour later, there was a knock at the door, to which Elena ignored at first, thinking it was Kitty, and she was also deeply engros
Chapter 22
Seeing the lady with the wool cap turn to look at him, a small smile found its way to Tyler's face, his right hand reaching forward before he could stop himself, “Miss Grey, The Owner, what brings you here?" Her blue eyes sparkled at the mere sound of his voice. Those unique eyes made her unmistakable anywhere she went, and her striking white hair, which she had hidden inside the wool cap on purpose, just to surprise Tyler.Tyler was almost lost in her gaze, remembering how she had stressed him to the brink when they first met. It was as though had gone crazy when she tried setting the room on fire, but here she was, glowing under the morning sun.She rolled her eyes and slapped his hand away, "I've told you to stop calling me that. I'm Fae. And drop that Owner title. It makes me uncomfortable." He maintained his smile, “But you're my landlord–”Warmth filled his torso and spread into every corner of his body when she threw herself into his arms, resting her head on his chest. He fl

Having collected the divorce documents from Kitty, Elena rushed over to the fire station. She was so close to getting into an accident with how impatient she was. It was as though there was more to the divorce. But, she felt a foreboding the closer she got to the station. She knew damn well never to push aside her gut feelings. Her car came to a stop in the station's parking lot. She jumped down, envelopes in hand, and moved briskly. She startled the man at the front desk as she more or less slammed the envelopes on the desk, “Good morning. I'm here to see my husband, Tyler Raymond.”The first place to check would have been the motel Kitty told her about, but she knew her husband too well. He wouldn't waste any time returning to the station. The man's eyes slowly dilated when he realized who was standing before him. Her tired eyes and eager posture didn't let him recognize her at first glance.“Mrs. Raymond! Good morning,” he greeted with an exaggerated bow. "He headed straight for th

"You're calling me a waste of time?” Elena was already fuming.Tyler rubbed the side of his face with a sigh, "See, Elena, in less than a week, we'll sign the divorce papers and be separated forever. You're more or less my ex wife at this point. So, going through the stress of making you jealous is just a waste of time. That's what I'm trying to say." Elena couldn't even talk at that point. She continued fuming. This gave him the chance to add more fuel to the fire, “I'll take that as your understanding face. Stop interfering with my life, it no longer concerns you. I believe I made this clear in your office last night.”Shaking her head, Elena chuckled dryly, “So, that's how it's gonna be, huh?" With stoic eyes, Tyler responded, "Yes. That's how it is.”"Tch. Fine. Have it your way,” she tossed the envelopes on the table. “I came here to make you sign these." “Sign what?" Tyler asked, already picking up one envelope. He pulled out the stapled files and furrowed his brows.“The div

Seven o'clock came quicker than Tyler expected. He was still in the locker room, halfway through changing out of his uniform, when his phone buzzed with a message from Fae saying she was already outside. He shook his head as he zipped up his jacket. The woman didn't believe in being fashionably late, apparently. When he stepped out front, her red car was parked exactly where it had been earlier that day, engine idling, windows tinted just enough to hide her from casual eyes. He climbed into the passenger seat, and the smell of something floral and expensive greeted him immediately."You actually showed up," Fae said, pulling out of the lot. "I was half expecting you to fake a shift extension or something.""I don't lie to get out of things," Tyler replied, adjusting his seatbelt. "If I didn't want to come, I'd have just told you.""Bold of you to assume I would've taken no for an answer." She glanced at him sideways, a smirk tugging at her lips. "But sure, let's pretend that would've
Chapter 26
The Grand Bellmont's lobby was quiet at that hour, all soft lighting and marble floors, with a single receptionist glancing up briefly before returning her attention to her screen. Tyler kept his hold on Fae steady as he approached the desk, muttering something about needing a room for a friend who'd had too much to drink. Money changed hands quickly enough, no questions asked, and within minutes he was in the elevator, watching the floor numbers climb. He glanced down at her the whole way up. She hadn't stirred once, her breathing slow and even against his chest, and if he were being honest with himself, that worried him more than it should have. He didn't know exactly how much she'd had, only that it had been enough to knock her clean out before they'd even left the restaurant. The room was modest but clean, a single bed pushed against the far wall, curtains drawn over a dark window. Tyler crossed the room carefully and lowered her onto the mattress, one hand still cradling the back
Chapter 27
Tyler woke to the sound of paper shuffling somewhere close by, followed by the faint clicking of a pen against a table. He blinked against the morning light filtering in through the curtains, momentarily forgetting where he was until the details of the night before slowly filtered back in.He was still in the hotel room. Or rather, back in it. He had gone home to shower and change, and apparently Fae had texted him to come by before his shift, which explained why he was standing awkwardly near the door now, watching her sit cross-legged on the bed with what looked suspiciously like an actual document in her lap."You're staring, Mr. Fire," Fae said without looking up, still scribbling something.‘Mr Fire?’ Tyler wondered how many more aliases she was going to regard him as."You have a list?" Tyler said. "An actual, physical list. With bullet points.""Of course I do." She finally glanced up, holding the paper toward him like she was presenting evidence in court. "You didn't think I'd

"A timer?" Tyler repeated, still trying to catch up. "You mean they've already picked someone?""Picked, groomed, and probably already told half their social circle about," Fae said, waving a hand like it was the most mundane thing in the world. "His name is Preston Kane. His family owns half the shipping routes on the east coast, and mine owns most of the logistics companies that depend on those routes. Put the two families together, and you've got a very tidy little empire.""So this isn't just about pressure to date someone," Tyler muttered slowly. "This is an actual arranged marriage.""Bingo." She said it lightly, but something in her eyes didn't quite match the tone. "They haven't announced it publicly yet, but it's already been discussed at length behind closed doors. Dinners have happened. Photos have been taken for the society pages. It's only a matter of time before they expect me to just… agree."Tyler leaned back in his chair, studying her more carefully now. The playful,
Chapter 29
The first store Fae dragged him into had a chandelier bigger than his entire hotel room, and Tyler nearly turned around right at the entrance."Absolutely not," he said, eyeing the price tag on a plain-looking dress shirt hanging near the door. "That's more than I make in two weeks.""Relax, we're just browsing," Fae scoffed, already weaving further into the store like she'd walked through it a hundred times before. Knowing her, she probably had."Browsing where I can afford to actually buy something would be nice," he muttered, following reluctantly. She picked through a rack of blazers, holding one up against him without asking, tilting her head in consideration before shaking her own head and moving to the next. "You're impossible, you know that? Most men would be thrilled at the idea of a free wardrobe upgrade.""Most men aren't trying to keep their dignity intact," Tyler said, gently pulling the blazer from her hands and setting it back on the rack. "I told you, I'm not doing the
Chapter 30
Tyler kept half an eye on Jerry as he made his way toward the station entrance, but the old man made no move to approach. Instead, he stayed exactly where he was, hands still tucked into his coat pockets, watching with an expression that seemed almost thoughtful rather than intrusive.Tyler decided not to make a thing of it. If the man wanted to talk, he'd come over eventually. For now, there was a shift to get ready for, and he had more immediate things to focus on than a stranger loitering in the parking lot.He clocked in, exchanged a few easy greetings with the rest of the crew trickling in for the morning rotation, and helped run through the usual truck checks before the day really got moving. Twice more he caught sight of Jerry through the station's front windows, still standing in roughly the same spot, occasionally shifting his weight but never actually leaving.By the time Tyler stepped back outside for a supply run, curiosity finally won out over his usual habit of minding h
