The radio crackled. Suite 318. Two confirmed victims.
Tyler pulled down his mask and checked his air tank one more time. Two hundred and thirty-seven times he had walked into burning buildings. Tonight would be two hundred and thirty-eight.
The Grandview Hotel's east wing was fully engulfed. Black smoke poured from the third-floor windows. Guests scattered past him, coughing and stumbling toward the exits. Tyler moved in the opposite direction.
"Team, let's move," he called to Bryan and the others behind him. His voice was steady, even as the temperature around them climbed toward impossible.
They took the stairs two at a time. The smoke thickened with every floor. By the third landing, it had become almost solid, so black you couldn't see your own hand in front of your face. Tyler moved on instinct and counting, his fingertips trailing along the wall.
The heat was immense. He could feel it eating through the layers of his gear.
"Third floor, east corridor," Bryan's voice crackled in his ear. "Moving to your position."
Tyler's boot drove into the door beside 318. Once. Twice. The frame splintered and the door swung wide.
Two figures huddled against the far window, backlighted by the flames crawling up the building outside. A man and a woman in nothing but hotel bathrobes.
"Fire department! We've got you, come on!" Tyler moved toward them, his voice muffled behind the mask.
The woman looked up.
His chest did something strange. He recognized every line of her face even through the smoke and chaos. The sharp cheekbones. The arched brows. The way she moved like she owned every room she entered.
Elena. His wife.
"What are you doing?" She snapped, moving toward him. "We need to leave now!"
She didn't recognize him beneath the mask. That was fine. Tyler turned his attention to the man beside her. Young, handsome, his monogrammed silk robe hanging open over bare skin. He coughed violently, one hand wrapped around Elena's waist in a way that made Tyler's jaw tighten.
"Let's move. Both of you," Tyler said, his voice carefully level.
"Wait," Elena pointed at his mask. "That one. Give it to Matthew."
Tyler went completely still.
"I'm sorry?" His voice came out thin.
"This is Michael Pinnacle," Elena continued, her tone the way she used when she was explaining something obvious to someone slow. "Heir to Pinnacle Corporation. He's important. If something happens to him, you'll face consequences. Give him the mask."
Tyler looked at her for a moment that stretched too long. Then he reached up and unclipped his mask.
"Tyler?" Elena's eyes widened. The shock lasted maybe two seconds before defensiveness hardened her face. "I can explain—"
"Save it," he said quietly, handing the mask to Matthew, who took it with shaking hands.
"Tyler, come on, don't be like this," Elena's voice softened, took on that pleading quality she used when she wanted something from him. "This is just a misunderstanding."
Tyler didn't answer. He grabbed both of them and pulled them into the corridor.
They stumbled down the stairs, Tyler supporting their weight, his lungs burning without the mask. Matthew coughed beside him. Elena stayed silent, radiating anger as though she were the one being wronged. They had barely reached the middle of the second-floor landing when everything changed.
A sound like the world splitting open.
The explosion of pressure threw Tyler forward. His body moved on pure instinct. He spun, pushing both of them down, covElenag Elena's body with his own as the ceiling came apart above them. Something massive and heavy struck across his left leg. The pain was white and total, but he forced his hands against the concrete and shoved the beam sideways with everything he had left.
He pulled his leg free.
Elena lay beneath him, dust in her hair, her eyes wide.
For just a moment, Tyler thought he saw regret in her expression. Love, maybe. Or he was hallucinating.
Then her gaze shifted past him to Matthew, and whatever he'd imagined vanished.
She wriggled out from under him without saying a word.
The next part existed in fragments. Smoke. Heat. His leg screaming with every step down the remaining stairs. Cold night air on his face. Paramedics running toward him. The chaos of guests and firefighters and emergency vehicles.
Tyler answered their questions about the injury. He declined the hospital ride. The whole time, he searched the chaos for Elena or Matthew. There was no sign of them anywhere.
The fire consumed the Grandview Hotel in great, hungry waves.
It looked exactly like his marriage was burning.

The command center had been transformed into something out of a nightmare.Elena pulled into the makeshift parking area and stepped out of her car. The air was thick with smoke. In a cordoned-off area near one of the large tents, she could see families gathered around white sheets draped over bodies. Some were crying. Some were just standing there, staring at nothing. Some were on their knees.Elena's stomach twisted. She moved toward the area, her eyes scanning the bodies beneath the sheets. She didn't know what she was looking for. Just something that told her Tyler wasn't under one of those sheets.A volunteer in a yellow vest saw her approaching."Ma'am, you can't be over here," the volunteer said. Her voice was gentle but firm."I'm looking for someone," Elena said. Her voice sounded strange in her own ears, high and thin. "A firefighter. Tyler Raymond. Engine Seven."The volunteer's expression softened. "The families are over there in the tent. You can check with them, but this

The six-hour drive felt longer than it should have. Tyler sat in the back of the engine, watching the sky turn from grey to orange as they got closer to Los Vangees. Smoke filled the air, thick enough to taste. Other firefighters sat in silence around him, their faces grim and focused. When they finally arrived at the command post, Fire Chief Rodriguez Hale was waiting. He was a lean man with deep lines around his eyes, the kind of lines that came from making impossible decisions. He looked like he hadn't slept in days."Listen up," Rodriguez called out, his voice cutting through the noise of trucks and radios. "The fire has surrounded much of this county. We have one evacuation road still open on the eastern side. That road is everything."He pointed to a map on the hood of a truck. "If we lose it, more than two thousand people get trapped. Nursing home residents, families in outlying areas, everyone. We need a firebreak along this eastern line to keep that road open."Tyler stepped
