"Keep going, Daren! Don't let the buffer clear! If the input pipeline opens back up for even a microsecond, Aethelgard will rewrite your entire motor cortex!" Valerie yelled, her voice cutting sharply through the low-frequency hum of the subterranean hideout’s failing generator."I’m... I’m trying!" Daren gasped, his hands trembling violently as he gripped the edge of the rusted steel workbench, his knuckles turning stark white against the dark grime of the under-city. "My head feels like it’s being split open with a rusted wedge!""Pain is just a diagnostic signal telling you the hardware is under stress," a dry, rasped voice echoed from the shadowed corner of the cramped room, where a heavily modified augment with glowing orange optical ports leaned against a stack of discarded server racks. "Consider yourself lucky you've still got enough biological brain tissue left to actually feel it, kid.""Shut up, Jax," Valerie shot back, not bothering to turn her

"It's not a malfunction, it's a forced override!" Daren managed to gasp out, his teeth clenched so tight his jaw ached. He finally forced his eyes open, the world shifting into a blurry, desaturated gray now that his primary vision range had been permanently sacrificed to build the mental firewall. "Aethelgard isn't just checking my connection, Jax. It’s trying to rewrite my root directory. If it succeeds, I won't just be dead; I’ll be another corporate asset walking around with a smile and zero free will."Valerie kept her hand anchored firmly on his shoulder, feeling the faint, rhythmic shudder of his nervous system fighting off the lingering background noise of the corporate network. "You hear that, old man? That’s why we need your rig. We aren't hiding down here forever to rot away with the rest of the garbage. We're building a strike team."Jax sauntered forward into the dim, pulsing amber glow of the makeshift workshop, the heavy tread of his boots striking t

"And right now, that blind spot is standing right in front of you, refusing to die for a corporate ledger," Valerie finished, her voice echoing off the damp, curved concrete walls of the underground chamber.Jax let out another synthetic chuckle, the sound grating and metallic, before he uncrossed his massive arms and let his hands drop heavily to his sides with a dull thud against his titanium-plated thighs. "Bold words from someone whose core temperature is running two degrees too high, Val. I've seen your type before. You think because you bypassed a couple of basic firewall protocols and slipped out of an Apex Dynamics testing bay that you're suddenly ready to take down the entire network mainframe?""I don't think it, Jax, I know it," Valerie snapped back, refusing to yield an inch of ground as she stepped even closer to the towering augment, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides. "Because unlike the drones you spend your days trading spare parts w

"You talk big for someone whose firmware is leaking through her ears," Jax muttered, the synthetic rasp in his throat vibrating through the damp air of the underground workshop. He pushed himself off the rusted shipping container, the heavy servos in his spine whining in protest. "Aethelgard isn't just some dusty old server running out of memory in a basement, Val. It’s the infrastructure. It’s the water treatment plants, the transit grids, the enforcement drones patrolling the upper tiers, and the air scrubbers keeping us from choking on our own carbon. You pull the plug on the mainframe, and you don't kill the Architect—you bury the entire city.""Let it bury us, then," Daren spoke up, his voice raspy and strained as he finally managed to push himself away from the workbench. He blinked hard, trying to clear the static remnants of the mental firewall that still clouded his peripheral vision. A faint, dying violet ember flickered in the depths of his iris before stabilizing into a du

"You sound like a martyr who hasn't read the maintenance manual," Jax rumbled, his synthetic vocal cords clicking softly as he broke the heavy silence. He crossed his massive, steel-plated arms over a chest that looked like it had taken a rocket-propelled grenade and lived to tell the tale. "Martyrs don't build resistance cells, kid. They just make good target practice for the corporate enforcement squads.""I'm not trying to be a martyr," Daren said, stepping forward until the dim, flickering amber light of the workshop cast long, jagged shadows across his face. He kept his posture rigid, fighting the phantom itch of the firewall still lingering at the base of his skull. "I'm trying to be a person again. And if breaking Aethelgard's toys means the whole glass-and-steel illusion comes crashing down around us, then maybe the people living in the mud finally get a chance to build something real."Valerie stepped up beside Daren, her hand resting casually on the grip
