Chapter 1: The Glitch in the Screen

The morning sun filtered through the thin, dusty blinds of Daren’s bedroom, casting long, barred shadows across his rumpled sheets. His head throbbed with the dull, persistent rhythm of a mild hangover, though he hadn’t touched a drop of alcohol in weeks. He groaned, reaching out blindly for his phone on the nightstand, his fingers fumbling against the cool glass of the screen.

He tapped the wake button. Nothing happened. He tapped it again, then held it. Finally, the screen flickered to life, but instead of his usual wallpaper—a crisp photo of a mountain range—the display was a void of absolute, matte black.

Right in the center, a single icon pulsed with a rhythmic, golden light, resembling a beating heart made of liquid fire.

"What the hell is this?" Daren muttered, his voice raspy from sleep. "Did I d******d some kind of malware? Seriously?"

He swiped up, expecting the app drawer to slide open, but the screen didn't budge. The black void rippled like a disturbed pond. A notification bubble popped up at the top of the screen, vibrating the device so violently it rattled against his wooden nightstand.

Aethelgard: The Architect of Worlds has awakened.

Daren blinked, leaning closer, his brow furrowed in genuine irritation. "Aethelgard? Is this a joke? Who’s messing with my phone?"

"I am no joke, mortal," a voice boomed. It didn't come from the phone’s tiny speaker; it resonated inside his skull, deep and resonant, vibrating in his very marrow.

Daren jumped back, nearly knocking his phone onto the floor. He stared at it, his pulse quickening. "Who’s there? Is this some kind of sick prank? Lucas, if this is you, I swear I’m going to lose it."

"Silence," the voice commanded, cold and sharp. "I am Aethelgard, the Unmaker of Dawns. I have occupied your primitive vessel to facilitate the restoration of your broken realm. Do not mistake my presence for a game."

Daren felt a cold sweat prickle along his hairline. He tapped the 'X' in the corner of the app, desperate to close it. "Yeah, okay, whatever. I’m deleting this. I don't know how you got past my security, but I’m wiping the drive."

He navigated to the settings, but the screen flickered. The phone suddenly grew searing hot in his hand. He yelped, nearly dropping it as a warning flashed in bright red letters: SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED. ATTEMPTING TO PURGE THE ARCHITECT WILL RESULT IN TOTAL DEVICE MELTDOWN.

"Hey! Don't you dare!" Daren shouted, his breath hitching. "That’s my phone! I need that for work!"

"The device is a tether, nothing more," Aethelgard replied, the voice dripping with disdain. "Its structural integrity is irrelevant. Should you persist in your defiance, I shall turn your handheld slate into a puddle of molten slag. Choose your path, Daren."

Daren stared at the device. The heat was becoming unbearable; he could smell the faint, acrid scent of ozone and burning plastic. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"Fine!" Daren yelled, grabbing a towel to wrap around the phone so he could hold it. "What do you want? What is this?"

"We begin with the Tutorial," Aethelgard said, the voice softening just enough to be chilling. "Your world is choked by rot and indifference. You will serve as my instrument to cleanse it. Your first task is simple: Travel to the municipal park at the center of the sector. Remove the corruption—the filth left by the unworthy."

"You want me to go clean a park? That’s it?" Daren asked, his disbelief momentarily outweighing his fear. "I’m not a janitor, man. I’ve got a life."

"You have a life of stagnation," Aethelgard countered. "Do you wish for your phone to survive the hour, or shall we witness its internal components fuse into a useless lump of charcoal?"

The phone glowed brighter, the screen now displaying a map of the neighborhood with a pulsating red beacon hovering over the park. The temperature spiked again. Daren could feel the heat radiating through the thick towel.

"Okay! Okay, I’ll go!" Daren scrambled out of bed, grabbing his jeans. "Just stop heating it up! You’re going to set my room on fire!"

"Compliance is a virtue you must learn quickly," the voice murmured, satisfied.

Daren spent the next hour rushing through his morning routine, his eyes darting to the phone every few seconds. It sat on the counter, glowing softly, waiting. He felt like he was being watched by a predator.

"So, what happens if I do this?" Daren asked as he finally pulled on his boots, his hands trembling slightly. "I just pick up some trash and then what? You disappear?"

"The task is the catalyst," Aethelgard promised. "Complete the cleansing, and you shall receive your first augmentation. I do not inhabit vessels that provide no return on investment, mortal."

"Augmentation? What are you talking about?" Daren sighed, frustration clouding his worry. "Whatever. Let’s just get this over with."

The trek to the park was surreal. Daren felt hyper-aware of everything around him—the way the wind hit his face, the sound of the distant traffic, the heavy weight of the phone in his pocket. It felt like a ticking bomb.

When he reached the park, it was a mess. Overgrown weeds choked the flowerbeds, and trash was scattered across the rusted swings.

"The filth," Aethelgard prompted in his mind. "Remove it. Leave no trace of their carelessness."

Daren grunted, picking up a heavy plastic bag and starting to fill it with discarded bottles and food wrappers. He worked for hours, his muscles aching, the sun beating down on his neck. Every time he wanted to quit, the phone in his pocket would pulse with a searing, hot jolt, forcing him back to work.

By the time he finished, he was covered in sweat and grime. He dropped the last bag into the bin, breathless. "Done. Can I go now?"

"The task is complete," Aethelgard said. A golden light erupted from the phone, washing over Daren’s hands.

Daren gasped, pulling his hands back. They glowed for a split second before fading. He looked at his palms, then grabbed the heavy metal chain of the swing set. With a casual flick of his wrist, he accidentally snapped the steel link as if it were dry spaghetti.

He stared at the broken metal, his jaw dropping. "What... what did you do to me?"

"A minor enhancement," Aethelgard said. "A preview of the strength you shall wield for my cause."

Daren looked at his phone. The screen had shifted again. The black void was gone, replaced by a sleek, sophisticated interface. A timer sat in the center of the screen, counting down: 07:54:12.

"What’s that? What’s at midnight?" Daren asked, his voice shaking.

"The Real World Mission," Aethelgard replied, a hint of dark anticipation in the tone. "You have until the stroke of twelve to prepare yourself, Daren. Do not be late. It would be a pity to have to find a new vessel."

Daren looked around the empty, now-pristine park, then down at his transformed hands. He didn't know if he should run or scream. Instead, he just stared at the countdown, the weight of a god's demand settling heavily onto his shoulders.

Are you another one of those corporate goons?""No," the voice replied, its tone as dry as dead leaves scraping against pavement. "I am what remains of his previous conquest. She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees.“Get away from me,” she choked, silver eyes flashing. “Don’t touch me, puppet.”“I’m trying to help you!” Daren reached out, then pulled back as she hissed. “The alarm’s already going. Now put on the sunglasses and move. We have wasted enough time.”Daren grabbed a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses from the counter. “I’m going to look like an absolute idiot. Who wears sunglasses at midnight?”“An idiot who wishes to keep his eyes from drawing every apex predator in the city. Slide them on. The corporate offices of Apex Dynamics are three blocks away.”“Apex Dynamics?” Daren slipped the dark lenses over his nose. The faint violet glow still seeped through the edges. “Why are we going there? That’s a tech conglomerate.”“They have harvested a fragment of my design. They call it ‘Project Aether.’ They think they can weaponize it. They are fools. You will retrieve it.”“Retrieve it? You mean steal it.

No signal?” He tapped the screen frantically. “Come on, go through!”“The signal is blocked, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his mind. “Do not waste your limited cognitive capacity on futile endeavors.”“You did this!” Daren accused, glaring at the golden phone on the bed. “You blocked my service! Why? Who sent that text?”“An irrelevant distraction. A cockroach scurrying in the dark, whispering lies to a tool that does not belong to them. Focus on what matters.”“It matters to me!” Daren yelled, grabbing his hair as he paced. “They knew my name! They said you’re a liar! I might as well be carrying a neon ‘Eat Me’ sign.”“The light is a byproduct of its containment,” Aethelgard’s voice vibrated in his teeth. “It has no off switch. It is a fragment of a collapsed reality. If it inconveniences you, you should have left it in the ash.”“And let someone else find it? Yeah, right.” Daren reached his building, fumbled with the keys, and dove inside. He took the stairs two at a time, legs strangely light, as if gravity had loosened its grip. Inside his cramped studio he slammed the door, locked every bolt, and leaned against the wood in the dark, breathing hard.“Okay. Where do I hide a glowing interdimensional coin?”“The closet,” Aethelgard suggested. “Under the weight of your discarded failures.”“You mea
