Chapter 11
The heavy wooden door at the bottom of the stairs broke into pieces with a loud crash.Kael stood tall in the center of the dusty room. His heart beat hard in his chest, but his hands did not shake. Behind him, Seren pulled Theo toward the dark maintenance hole behind the clock face."Take the boy and go," Kael said, his voice firm and steady."I am not leaving you here to die alone," Seren said, her eyes wide with panic."Get him out of here now," Kael shouted, pointing toward the dark opening. "Do it."Rook grabbed Seren by the arm and pulled her toward the hole, lifting a crying Theo into the small space. The boy reached his small hand out toward his father, screaming his name over the rising noise from the stairway.Kael looked at his son for the last time. Because of the system price he had paid moments ago, the image of Theo's face was completely gone from his mind. He did not remember what his son looked like. He only knew that he loved him with everything he had left.Footstep
Chapter 12
The underground tunnel smelled of damp earth and old iron. Water dripped from the ceiling, making a sharp sound against the concrete floor. Seren knelt in the dirt, holding the three cold silver rings in her hand. Her breath came in short gasps. The white light from the clock tower was gone, leaving behind a thick darkness that felt heavy and suffocating. Beside her, Rook kept his gun raised, his eyes fixed on the shadows up ahead. "We have to move right now," Rook said, his voice tense. "The Circle knows we are down here. They will send more people." "Kael is gone," Seren said. Her voice did not sound like her own. It was flat and empty. "He gave everything to close the gate." "If he gave his life so we could get o
Chapter 13
The voice in the dark belonged to a ghost. Seren froze with her hand held out, the cold silver ring resting on her palm. Her heart skipped a beat as the chilling sound echoed inside her mind rather than through the air. The warning hung heavy in the damp space, telling her that Lyra was not an ally, but a trap waiting to snap shut. Lyra narrowed her eyes, her blue glow flaring up like a struck match. She saw Seren hesitate and instantly lunged forward to grab the ring. "Do not listen to the dead," Lyra snapped, her smooth voice turning sharp and cruel. Rook reacted before Seren could move. He shoved Lyra back hard against the concrete wall, his gun pressed squarely against her collarbone.

Chapter 14
The countdown on the drone ticked down in fast, electronic beeps, echoing off the wet concrete walls. Forty seconds. Seren tightened her grip on her hidden blade. Rook clicked his gun safety off and planted his feet firmly against the ground. The air in the tunnel grew heavy and thin as the automated gas vents above began to hum to life, ready to release a cloud of toxic fumes that would put them all to sleep in seconds. Theo buried his face against Seren's side, shaking without making a sound. Thirty seconds. From the dark opening of the middle tunnel, the figure stepped forward into the dim circle of light. The blue fire glowing in the person's eyes was s
Chapter 15
The ceiling of the underground station broke apart with a loud roar, sending heavy chunks of concrete crashing down onto the platform. Dust and grey smoke filled the air, cutting off the light and making it hard to breathe. Kael did not blink. He pulled Theo closer to his side, pushing the boy behind a heavy steel pillar while Seren and Rook took cover with their weapons drawn. The older man from the Circle stumbled back, coughing as the cloud of dust washed over him. His men scattered in every direction, trying to avoid the falling debris. "What is happening?" the enforcer shouted, raising his arms to shield his face from the falling stones. Through the massive hole in the ceiling, a heavy transport vehicle dropped
Chapter 16
The transport vehicle hit the brakes so hard that Kael slid across the metal floor, but he kept his arms locked tight around Theo to protect the boy from the shock. Red light flashed across the dashboard. The alarm sounded a loud, piercing note that bounced off the curved walls of the tunnel. Up ahead, through the thick glass of the front windshield, a massive wall made of dark iron bars blocked the tracks entirely. It looked heavy enough to stop a train running at full speed. Standing right in front of the barrier, waiting calmly in the dim light, was a tall man wearing a long coat with the supreme council's highest mark stitched into the collar. The man did not look like Veyra or Dariac. He did not have glowing blue eyes or wild energy radiating from his skin. He looked or
Chapter 17
The air inside the ruined transport turned ice cold as Theo stood up with empty, glowing eyes. Kael felt his chest tighten into a hard knot. He took a sharp step forward, but the gray-haired director raised a hand, and a heavy wall of blue energy dropped between them, blocking the way. "Do not test me, Kael," the director said smoothly, his eyes fixed on the three rings resting in Kael's palm. "The boy's mind is connected directly to the main terminal in the city center. One wrong move from you, and his thoughts will be wiped out forever. He will become nothing more than a living shell." Seren gripped her blade so hard her knuckles turned white. She looked from Cynthia to the director, her voice sharp. "You lied. The data drive, the safe route, the transport—it was all
Chapter 18
The blast tore the roof off the transport vehicle and threw me backward into the cold concrete wall of the tunnel. Pain shot through my shoulder, but I did not care about that. My eyes locked onto the center of the platform where Theo was standing. The boy's small body hovered a few inches off the ground, surrounded by a ring of dark, heavy energy that pushed everything away. His eyes were completely black, devoid of any light or life. Rook scrambled backward across the rubble, wiping blood from his forehead. He stared at the boy with wide, terrified eyes. "Kael, what is happening to him?" "The transfer," I said, struggling to push myself up to my feet. My legs felt weak, but I forced myself to move forward. "The director said the transfer was already finished."<
Chapter 19
The cold concrete bit into my back as I pushed myself up from the tracks, watching the dark tunnel where the director had just taken my son. My chest burned from the blast, but the pain inside my head was much worse. Theo's blank, black eyes flashed over and over in my mind like a broken film. They had taken him. They had turned my own flesh and blood into a living key for their machine, and I was still standing here breathing. Seren stepped over a pile of rubble and walked up to me, wiping a streak of dust from her cheek. Her expression was hard, her eyes fixed on the path the enemy had taken. "They are heading for the central hub," Seren said, her voice steady. "If the director reaches the main terminal with the boy and the three rings, the council will lock down every sec
Chapter 20
Red light flashed down the long hallway, casting sharp shadows across the metal walls as the automated turrets locked their barrels right onto our chests. The gray-haired director stood at the far end of the corridor with the three silver rings shining on his fingers. Right beside him stood Theo, his small body unmoving, his eyes completely black and empty. "You walked right into the trap," the director said, his voice echoing off the curved ceiling. "Did you really think a back door in an abandoned drainage line would remain a secret from the council?" Cynthia cursed under her breath, taking a quick step backward. "The access codes were secure. He must have tracked the frequency the moment we entered the sub-basement."
