Kael stood in the living room of the house he had worked so hard to keep.

Luxury cars filled the driveway outside. Strange men in black suits walked around like they owned the place. His heart was already heavy when he saw the message from Theo’s school.

Two terms of school fees were unpaid.

He had given Lila that money last month.

“Lila?” he called.

No answer.

He checked the cardboard box under the stairs where they kept their savings. Empty. Five hundred and fifty thousand dollars he had saved for years — gone.

An old voice came from upstairs.

“Come up here, you useless man.”

Kael climbed the stairs. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Voss, stood with her arms crossed. Next to her was Lila. And next to Lila was Marcus Hale, the rich man everyone in the city knew.

Marcus had his arm around Lila’s waist.

Before Kael could speak, Marcus pulled Lila close and kissed her right in front of him.

Kael’s hands started shaking.

“What is this?” he asked quietly.

Lila wiped her mouth and looked at him like he was nothing.

“I’m done with you, Kael. You’re poor. You have nothing. This marriage is over.”

Kael stepped forward. “I gave you everything. I worked double shifts. I fixed other people’s cars at night so Theo could go to a good school. I stayed when your family treated me like dirt. I loved you even when you stopped saying it back.”

Lila laughed. “That was your mistake.”

Marcus smirked. “She finally chose someone who can actually take care of her.”

Kael’s voice broke. “Where is Theo?”

Lila shrugged. “At school, I guess. Not my problem anymore.”

The television in the corner was on. A news reporter spoke fast.

“A school bus was attacked less than an hour ago. One child is still missing. The child is believed to be the main target.”

Kael’s blood turned cold.

He knew that school bus route.

He turned and ran for the door.

Mrs. Voss blocked him. “You’re not taking our car.”

Marcus held up the keys and smiled. “Buy your own.”

Kael pushed past them and jumped on his old motorcycle. He didn’t care about the blood on his face from earlier. He only cared about reaching his son.

Rain started falling hard. He raced through the streets, past police cars, up the long hill toward the bridge.

He saw the bus near the edge of the cliff. Men with guns stood around it.

Kael didn’t slow down.

A bullet hit his tire. The motorcycle crashed. He rolled across the road, skin tearing, but he got up and ran straight into the bus.

“Theo!”

A small voice answered from the back. “Daddy…”

Theo was curled under a seat, crying, blood on his shirt.

Kael pulled him close. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”

A man with a mask stepped forward and raised a gun.

“Kill the father. Keep the boy. The family will pay anything.”

Kael put Theo behind him. He fought with everything he had left. He took a knife from one man and stabbed the driver. The bus lurched forward toward the cliff.

Bullets hit Kael’s back and side. He still held Theo tight.

The front of the bus broke through the barrier.

Kael looked at his son one last time. Tears mixed with blood on his face.

“I love you,” he whispered.

With the last of his strength, he threw Theo out the broken window toward the wet grass.

Then the bus went over the edge.

Cold water filled everything. Kael’s body sank fast. His lungs burned. His mind showed him every time he had trusted Lila. Every time he had believed Marcus was just a friend. Every night he had worked so Theo could have a better life.

He had lost it all.

His eyes closed.

Then a strange voice spoke inside his head.

A sharp pain cut through Kael’s chest. Something cold and bright pushed into his mind.

Kael’s eyes snapped open.

He was no longer in the water.

The television was still playing the news about the school bus.

Outside, the luxury cars were just arriving.

Marcus Hale was stepping out of one of them, smiling.

Lila was walking toward the front door.

Kael looked down at his hands.

They were not shaking anymore.
