Kael stood in the living room of the house he had worked so hard to keep.

Luxury cars filled the driveway outside. Strange men in black suits walked around like they owned the place. His heart was already heavy when he saw the message from Theo’s school.

Two terms of school fees were unpaid.

He had given Lila that money last month.

“Lila?” he called.

No answer.

He checked the cardboard box under the stairs where they kept their savings. Empty. Five hundred and fifty thousand dollars he had saved for years — gone.

An old voice came from upstairs.

“Come up here, you useless man.”

Kael climbed the stairs. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Voss, stood with her arms crossed. Next to her was Lila. And next to Lila was Marcus Hale, the rich man everyone in the city knew.

Marcus had his arm around Lila’s waist.

Before Kael could speak, Marcus pulled Lila close and kissed her right in front of him.

Kael’s hands started shaking.

“What is this?” he asked quietly.

Lila wiped her mouth and looked at him like he was nothing.

“I’m done with you, Kael. You’re poor. You have nothing. This marriage is over.”

Kael stepped forward. “I gave you everything. I worked double shifts. I fixed other people’s cars at night so Theo could go to a good school. I stayed when your family treated me like dirt. I loved you even when you stopped saying it back.”

Lila laughed. “That was your mistake.”

Marcus smirked. “She finally chose someone who can actually take care of her.”

Kael’s voice broke. “Where is Theo?”

Lila shrugged. “At school, I guess. Not my problem anymore.”

The television in the corner was on. A news reporter spoke fast.

“A school bus was attacked less than an hour ago. One child is still missing. The child is believed to be the main target.”

Kael’s blood turned cold.

He knew that school bus route.

He turned and ran for the door.

Mrs. Voss blocked him. “You’re not taking our car.”

Marcus held up the keys and smiled. “Buy your own.”

Kael pushed past them and jumped on his old motorcycle. He didn’t care about the blood on his face from earlier. He only cared about reaching his son.

Rain started falling hard. He raced through the streets, past police cars, up the long hill toward the bridge.

He saw the bus near the edge of the cliff. Men with guns stood around it.

Kael didn’t slow down.

A bullet hit his tire. The motorcycle crashed. He rolled across the road, skin tearing, but he got up and ran straight into the bus.

“Theo!”

A small voice answered from the back. “Daddy…”

Theo was curled under a seat, crying, blood on his shirt.

Kael pulled him close. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”

A man with a mask stepped forward and raised a gun.

“Kill the father. Keep the boy. The family will pay anything.”

Kael put Theo behind him. He fought with everything he had left. He took a knife from one man and stabbed the driver. The bus lurched forward toward the cliff.

Bullets hit Kael’s back and side. He still held Theo tight.

The front of the bus broke through the barrier.

Kael looked at his son one last time. Tears mixed with blood on his face.

“I love you,” he whispered.

With the last of his strength, he threw Theo out the broken window toward the wet grass.

Then the bus went over the edge.

Cold water filled everything. Kael’s body sank fast. His lungs burned. His mind showed him every time he had trusted Lila. Every time he had believed Marcus was just a friend. Every night he had worked so Theo could have a better life.

He had lost it all.

His eyes closed.

Then a strange voice spoke inside his head.

[Host body failing. Emergency protocol started.]

A sharp pain cut through Kael’s chest. Something cold and bright pushed into his mind.

[System linked. Name: Echo.]

[You died protecting what mattered. Most hosts fail that test.]

[New rule for you: Every power you gain will cost a memory of the people who betrayed you. The more power you take, the less you will remember why you hated them. Use it carefully.]

[First gift unlocked: One restart.]

Kael’s eyes snapped open.

He was no longer in the water.

He was standing in the same living room he had left earlier that day — dry clothes, no wounds, the same afternoon light coming through the window.

The television was still playing the news about the school bus.

Outside, the luxury cars were just arriving.

Marcus Hale was stepping out of one of them, smiling.

Lila was walking toward the front door.

Kael looked down at his hands.

They were not shaking anymore.

The voice spoke one more time.

[Your son is still alive in this timeline… for now. What will you do first?]

The giant main screen inside the central vault flashed a bright, blinding white, showing a live video feed from a secret underground room that made my blood run cold in an instant.I stopped dead in my tracks. My fingers lost their grip on Theo's small hand for a split second as my eyes locked onto the monitor.Sitting inside a glass medical chair on the screen was a woman with dark hair tied back in a simple knot. Her eyes stared blankly straight ahead as if she were trapped in a deep, endless sleep.Seren dropped into a low, defensive stance beside me. Her eyes went wide with pure shock as she stared at the face on the wall."No," Seren said, her voice shaking slightly. "That is impossible. She was supposed to be

A wall of red laser beams crisscrossed the observation deck, trapping us in a cage of pure light while Commander Vance smiled across the polished marble floor. The air in the room grew instantly cold. Along the edges of the open deck, the heavy steel shutters locked into place with a loud finality, sealing off every possible route back down the stairs or out to the elevators. We were cut off, surrounded, and outmatched.Seren stepped in front of Theo instantly, her hand dropping to the hilt of her hidden blade. Her eyes didn't show an ounce of fear, only a fierce, biting anger as she stared straight at Vance."You walked right into our trap, Kael," Vance said, taking a slow step forward. He touched the slight smear of dried blood on his cheek, his smile turning sharp and ugl

A blinding flash of blue light exploded right in Commander Vance's face, sending him tumbling backward onto the wet asphalt as the heavy transport trucks behind him plunged into total confusion.I didn't wait to see him get back up. I turned around and sprinted toward the sedan, sliding into the open door just as Vane slammed her foot down on the gas pedal. The car shot forward, tearing through the gap between the stalled transport trucks before the stunned enforcers could raise their weapons to fire."Hold on!" Vane called out, gripping the steering wheel as she took a sharp, sliding turn down a narrow alleyway. In the back seat, Seren pulled Theo close, making sure the boy was safe from the sudden movement. The headlights of the heavy armored transport trucks cut through the pouring rain like sharp blades, blinding us instantly and forcing me to slam my foot hard onto the brakes. The tires skidded across the wet asphalt, burning rubber as the sedan came to a sharp, sudden stop just feet away from the metal barrier."Hold on!" I shouted, bracing my hands against the steering wheel. In the back seat, Seren pulled Theo down below the window level, her eyes fixed on the line of armed guards stepping out from behind the trucks. They wore full tactical gear bearing the council's crest, and every single one of them raised a heavy plasma rifle, pointing straight at our windshield.Vane didn't panic. She stared at the barricade

The red laser dot rested directly on Seren's forehead, and the enforcer captain at the barricade raised his hand to give the final order. My finger tightened against the trigger of the sniper rifle. I did not aim for the guards standing on the street. Instead, I lined up the crosshairs on the main power transformer box mounted right above the barricade, where the wires fed straight into the council's floodlights and plasma shields.Without hesitation, I pulled the trigger. The heavy rifle kicked back against my shoulder with a sharp crack. A second later, the transformer box exploded in a blinding shower of blue sparks and thick black smoke.Instantly, the bright floodlights lighting up the street went completely de

The red laser dot rested right over Seren's chest, glowing like a tiny drop of blood against her dark jacket. My hand slammed against the steering wheel. Up ahead, the council enforcers stood shoulder to shoulder behind the heavy metal barricade, their plasma rifles pointed straight at the transport van. Seren kept one arm planted firmly in front of Theo, pushing the boy back behind her body while her sharp eyes scanned every single guard on the line."They are not going to wait for a signal," the woman beside me said, her fingers resting lightly on the dashboard. "The sniper on the warehouse roof is under direct orders from the upper command. The moment the team leader gives the hand sign, they pull the trigger.""Not on my watch," I said.
